I do find it quite odd that the older MBA takes so long to startup/shutdown.

Processor, RAM, or even HDD speed would have no effect on the EFI (a Mac's version of a BIOS)...

The only difference would be if it was a platter HDD vs a SSD (since the platters need time to spin-up). Either that, or Apple has worked their EFI pretty well in the new MBAs.

7200 rpm hdd's NO matter if they're booting osx, or win xp or win vista or win 7 require between 30 to 45 seconds (this is of course after the initial basic system powering up, booting up the bios and other basic posting stuff) to boot the complete o.s. and desktop environment completely loaded. I know this because FROM EXPERIENCE i've built enough Ubuntu, win xp, win 7 ( 4 vista home premium yeeeeuaak) machines. OSX is ALITTle quicker to boot than win 7 but not twice as fast....however.

Old Airs start up roughly the same time there isn't that much difference i have done a test myself

Old Airs (like the one on the left) use a 4200 RPM ZIF drive--like what they use in iPods. That's why it's so slow. On the right, the newer Airs use SSD. Still not as fast as an MBP with 7200RPM 2.5" drive, but much improved over the original Air. I have a 1st gen air, and it takes a long time to start up, even with a fresh install.

First, this device is not expected to be turned OFF and ON. It sleeps. Second, you are comparing what??? Slight differences in speed for real-world applications? No! Both machines are extremely under-powered (coding limitations) and come with defects Apple refuses to acknowledge. They look pretty, but crash if challenged, and overheat like a mutha! Barely any connectivity. No upgrades on new model, and it's considered 'disposable' - 2yrs max. They both hate Flash - literally!

@rocksandboulders that's not fresh boot. Starting os x still takes time. it's when u close the lid and the computer goes to sleep or hibernate (apple has a special hibernation mode fore mba), then when u open up the lid, it instantly turns back on how u left it before.
