Slayer continues to amaze, even after 20+ years. They will always be the greatest thrash band in my opinion. I am a die-hard Slayer fan and always will be. FUCKING SLAYER!!!!

In terms of dark atmosphere, slayer is unmatched ( the first four or five albums). Don't consider technicality, song writing skills and other thing in this case. They are the closest to death metal in the realm of thrash bands. Kreator, Sodom come close behind slayer.
