  • Чудове виконнан"я !!! Браво !!!

  • This woman is incredibly talented - plays exquisitely - and amazingly well, technically, musically and with great depth. Brilliant - and thanks for posting

  • my most watched thing on youtube

  • Su Meng is using she's life to bring kindness to the world, Thak-you very much Su.

  • Is this the same Su that also plays blues and has been labeled Korean?

  • @IcolossusPSN...is that all you do on youtube , make comments like the prick that you are?

  • To those who find fault in her playing, a quote by Oscar Wilde comes to mind: "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."

  • Ehhhh what's the word? Ah ja, PERFECTION!!!. Particulary impressive is the interval 0.19-8.29

  • To all those people who say she's playing to fast, the metronome directions only became standard after Beethoven. most of this music is left up to the musician to interpret, also this was not specifically written for the guitar, again interpretation. and to those who get bogged down on their own way of doing things, open your mind

  • The good: she's playing from memory and has good technique. The bad: this prelude doesn't need to be played this fast. She's not letting the music breathe enough. More experience may correct this, especially in an obviously talented player.

  • She is fantastic. I've been listening this music played by her for years.

  • She's playing it to fast!

  • wow it's so amazing.....bagaimana saya bisa seperti itu salut untuk Su Meng

  • did i say she played bad, dork burger

  • too fast some part , but she's still freakingly good . do you have video of her playing fugue ? same suite ?

  • Bad right hand technique

  • @bigmuso123 Please, show yours!

  • slash????? who is he????

  • Ten Dorrah Make You Horrah!!!

  • wow , one mistake at 5.18,still a beast she is.

  • the chinese bach

  • @googlekopfkind What are you talking about? Bach was chinese...

  • She is not human, she is monster! perfect, perfect, perfect! 'Presto' was unbelievable, fast e clear.

  • Bravo, estupendo, sensacional. Ao lado de Li Jie, são um monstro sagrado da guitarra. Esvandir - Brasil.

  • The whitish powder is cocaine..ha ha ha

  • holy crap shes good

  • She's a robot lmao amazing.

  • Very nice.

Please check out my new de Visée performance as well if you feel like it.

  • and this is Bach Prelude : watch?v=JDhv2f2mweE

  • bad...not Bach...she is capable of playing this at a much higher level...this is Bach Allegro : watch?v=blwz20JJ5E0

  • @zp5xf

    Do you play this piece?

  • 1:14 - Some whitish substance on the fretboard. Do they put some powder on it while playing?

  • @BahoUtot

I don't think there is any powder on the fretboard. I think it is just because of light, with different types of reflection due to sweating.

  • @BahoUtot

You will also notice that she wipes her fingers and the strings between the Allegro and the Presto. But she doesn't wipe the fretboard (that would have taken too much time).

  • No guitar pieces will have your fingers twisting like Bach will.

  • @Aurelius27x

I agree.. this is mainly because Paganini does not twist the fingers, it just breaks them.

    watch?v=H36vL3MzQDU

  • oh my god...can i marry you?

  • @breakingthespell

she is already married with her guitar

  • Wow ... Great !!!!

  • this really stands as proof that if there is an art or technique or just even a thing to do, someone somewhere will master it.

  • Is the presto movement from 1001 or 998?

  • the sequence is , prelude and allegro from 998 ... presto is from 1001

  • Oh Wonderful Su never heard all three movements played. Fantastic have put you on my favourites. Colin Classical Guitar Society Of Northern Ireland

  • I think the best performance of the 998 I have seen so far... and I have seen quite a lot. congratulations. Perfect job.

  • superb quality

  • I get shivers

  • holy shit

  • Quel talent extraordinaire!

  • very very very well well well

  • She is great. Compare her to Li Jie, Ana Vidovic and past woman masters.

  • outstanding !!!

where can I get the transcript to the presto movement ? it's not in the original key ... completely awesome !

  • Superb performance.

  • Astounding performance! Great!

  • Amazing talent....Its a previlege to see such a wonder work...

  • That is beautiful. I am greatful that we have the interent, where we can see great artists Su. I would love too see a live performance by her.

  • Un believable, absolutely jealous of that ability. And all from memory! no sheets for this monster. Impressive.

  • No body talk about music here. This girl play guitar beatifull. she has great tech.

  • Do you mean she should play some Chinese pieces or dress in Chinese custom?

  • that would be interesting to see, I'll go to her concert..

  • What an idiot thing to say. You a 4th grader?

  • LOL..what a clown...get a life you dork.

  • When were 4th graders become a race??? I have a 4th grader in my house.

  • they are like a race if you think about it i mean they are a demogrphic.. a statistic..

i dont know why everyone is so against wearing costumes for recitals.. check out galina vale.. now that it some cool style .. right?

see you gotta just expand your mind a little bit not everything has to be so boring.. if rock star people dress up then why should classical guitar cats?.. how bout liona byod.. she has trees in the back ground.. pretty fucking cool stuff man.. expand bro.. expand..

  • Wow, chill out, no need to be dramatic. I just have a question about 4th graders because I have one at home. I don't know what make you think I am against wearing costumes for recitals which I am not.

  • "-7", so what, life goes on, this is only Youtube, you didn't fail any subject.

  • @retsmah24 Panda outfits are not the kind of free thinking bigotry that the arts need. Go away.

  • yes it is bigotry is cool dick boy.

  • if the whole thing is about creativity then why not apply it beyond the guitar.. like come in playing in the back of a go-cart.. or like jump out of an ice cream truck.. like maybe play a guitar that looks like a machine gun in a gorilla war-fare battle.. the music is so cool why cant the scene be too.. doesn't anyone agree? man.. im gonna write guitar music for like a james and the giant peach thing.. hip right??

  • Besides speed and fast fingers, her technique is flawless, every note is clean, clear and controlled, more importantly it is highly musical. I think this concert was in 2006 before Su Meng and Wang Yameng went to study with Barrueco. I certainly would go to their concert if there is one near where I live.

  • @drivehybrid I disagree a bit on the musicality aspect..

  • The Allegro is great apart from the awful cadences but the Prelude is way too fast, a lot of the subtle counterpoint is overlooked and once again the opportunity to really explore the beautiful tone of the classical guitar is lost - as it often is with the current crop of speed crazy players.

  • a new breed

  • great player, great technique fast fingers, but not for me, so so choppy and notes cut to pieces, it just doesnt flow at this tempo on guitar..........sorry!!!!

  • Su Meng and Wang Yameng studied with Barrueco at Peabody in 2006, not sure about now. I hope somebody will arrange a world tour concerts for them. They deserve it.

  • She will be soon, Wang too...keep an eye on Barrueco's site

  • I don't know what you mean by "World class". Already she is second to none, setting a new standard in the world of classical guitar. It is just unfortunate she is not commercially well known.

  • Comment removed

  • calm and relax, she make it look so easy, awesome.

  • Su Meng is electrifying - the allegro is glorious

  • World class.

  • To clarify, she is playing the Prelude and Allegro from Prelude Fugue & Allegro BWV 998 (what happened to the Fugue??), and the Presto from BWV 1001.

  • SHE IS HANDS DOWN AMAZING. TECHNIQUE, VIRTUOSITY, MUSICALITY AND PASSION!!!!!! (KNEELING AND BOWING DOWN, HEAD TO THE FLOOR) I AM NOT WORTHY...haha

  • 우리는 이 성과에는 문제가 다는 것을 알고 있다

  • Wow. Amazing technique and very nice interpretation.

  • watched Su Meng perform today with Wang Yameng - Beijing Guitar Duo

    Thanks for coming to Philly!!

    What great players!!!!

  • Is there a YouTube, or other site where I can listen to Matthew Hayes, before I give your comment, my up or down thumb?

  • one of the best guitar players i've ever seen

  • I cannot believe that either Bach or his audience expected or meant for his"allegro" or "presto" to be played that fast. Modern speed is a consequence of modern instruments, strings, techniques, and practice. Does anyone have any hard info on this? Not a criticism; clearly Mu Seng is one of the world's best and can play it any way she wants, but I think it's a little too fast!

  • I have many times thought the same way. But especially with some pieces written by Bach, I just don't know. It seems like they are beautiful at any tempo you can think of. I personally prefer a bit slower speed with this Presto, however she plays it with such a competence that I just take my hat off to her.

  • thats not even her name

  • I read your comment and got my Manual of Musical Terms.

    ALLEGRO- Lively, brisk, rapid.

PRESTO- Fast, rapid, faster than allegro...

I do not have a metronomic equivalent for reference. I have not heard this piece from enough performers to know which tempo is

best. Su Meng is impressive, just for her rendition of this piece.

  • Bach called it allegro.. ;)

  • listening to bachs "phantasia" by the london symphony ochestra, i've decided some pieces sound better and make more sense played at faster tempos, reading "the joy of music" by leonard bernstein, he discusses how changing tempos is really what got him into the business in the beginning. it creates a mystery that is compelling to most.

  • Great interpretation of this Prelude. Congratulation Sue Meng. Yo due it in very calm and precise way.

  • respect

  • Like Wow!

  • a little more tempo would be good!

  • The Allegro is at breathtaking - all out joy with no holding back

    Love you Su Meng

  • Bravo !! She has amazing ability. This was truly a delight to watch and listen to. Su Meng plays so very fine.

  • I return time and again to be refreshed and uplifted - never fails

    Love you Su Meng

  • su meng now, is my new idol of guitar.¡¡

  • Can anyone deny the wind in a woman's hair?

The hair is not perfect, yet the beauty shines brighter. That is true feeling, would you agree?

  • Eh?

  • extraordinario excelente virtuosismo

  • Yeah. I was classically trained in guitar. The right hand technique might be a little wonky but the results are pleasant all the same.

Dominic Hasek is one of the better goalies of our time and he had a style all of his own.

    *shrug*

I like her. Maybe even more because of her flare and unique style.

  • I couldnt care less if she plucked it with her teeth - it's daring and according to the tradition of such music - she can play it anyways she wishes - I would like to see those who give neg statements regarding 'art' to post their own performance - without the computer keyboard - which makes easy to transition mindless comentary to enlightened player

    - show your licks!

  • 8 months ago there was a debate between me and others about Su's right hand technique. I referred them to the videos of Bream, Parkening, and Williams. They were still not convinced.

So here, at last, in Feb. 2009 are new instruction videos on YouTube for right hand technique. I suggest you view at lest part 3.

I stand by my statement that her right hand technique is not correct.

    YouTube:

"The Ida Presti right hand technique for guitar - Alice Artzt - 3/4"

  • with all my respect, su's right hand belongs to her. It's a part of her personality, she moves it according to her willing, not according to what somebody thinks true about hands positions!! there isn't improvisation in classical music partitions, so it's nice to feel an artist which has his own right hand positions... don't you think so?

  • there is no corect right hand technique, bream, russel, ida presti, williams, barueco they all have diferent techniques. sound good ? is right then........

  • But the Ida Presti technique is not "the right technique", it's a french exception! And if you talk about Segovia or Williams, they are closer to Su Meng than Ida Presti as far as their right hand is concerned!

Su Meng's right hand has an absolutely correct position, her wriste is a bit "open" (to the right) whereas Segovia "closes" (to the left). And lute players have quite the same position as Su.

  • I know, that s just what I said!!!!! people tend to criticize Su for the way she atacks the strins with the right hand but I don t know way. I think she has a beautiful technique almoust the same as li jie.. probably because they had the same profesor!!!! this is one of my favorite videos from all youtube, the way she plays bach is magnificent!

  • entropy56 is gay

  • haha

  • Yes...

  • politicians should listen to this while taking decisions about the future of this falling world.. that could save our souls and we could let some of this dying earth to our children... pure and wonderful...

  • I think The Ride of the Valkyries would result in better decisions.

  • well, i tried to imagine the 15th most important presidents of this crazy world listening to The Ride Of The Valkyries while taking decisions!!! awesome!!!!

  • Lmfao

    nice choice.

  • Hahahaahhahahahah!

  • as for the allegro, she emphasises all the wrong notes.

  • Dear Su Meng

Thank you for all the hard work it took you to give us this beautiful gift which, please believe, is deeply appreciated by many of us. We realize this is a live recording and so is all the more impressive.

I've shared your videos with those I know will love your playing, and all of them have thanked me. Please post more whenever you like - we will be waiting.

And please forgive those who fail to appreciate you, as they are stunned, like fish after the waters have been dynamited.

  • Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us... Amen.

  • omfg, what a strange coincidence :O

  • 5:46 her left baby finger hit directly on the 5th fret which caused a thud sound. At 5:19 there was another gaff resulting in a missed note.

  • Are you god?

  • are you god?

  • I heard the 'twang' sound at 5:20 - 5:21 but didn't hear anything wrong at 5:46.

Notice she has sweaty hands, perhaps she slipped? no one's perfect.

  • The missing note at 5:46 was on the 6th string base note. The melody was preserved on the high strings so it went unnoticed.

  • 'base' note? Don't you mean 'bass' note? I'm guessing you likely don't know the difference anyway...

  • Well In classical music you have to be 100% perfect. We don't listen to classical music to hear musicians who aren't perfect. Do you think when Bach composed this peice he was planning on it being played by imperfect musicians??

  • true, Bach wrote his music for God, and this interpretation sucks ass!!! It doesn't sound like Bach at all. Listen to Peo's interpretation of this prelude. She's waaaay off.

  • What is this perfection you speak of? If we should listen only to note perfect music then I guess no one should listen to live recordings of great artists but instead listen to music played by music competition winners and robots.

  • There is a difference between playing without feeling and playing it wrong! I prefer to listen to someone who plays the peice exactly as the sheet music describes it than some freewheeling hippy playing the wrong notes with so called feeling. In the future all music will be played by computers! All we have to do is get the voices better. Then we will be close to perfection!

  • If music should be played "exactly" like the sheet music states (disregarding the fact that sheet music is just an approximation of musical intent), then computers already do a superior job.

  • I agree, except for the voices which are still abit rough in places!!

  • you're right, but classical music can also be given live through concerts. you're probably talking about improvisation. well in classical music, even if you cannot improvise, you can play variations on a theme, and that can be exciting, don't you think so?

  • uhm... showing off?

    ... kidding

hahaha, sorry to disappoint you.. I could almost see your faces like, ahh another idiotic comment haha,

shit after some videos here on you tube, I think i will stop saying I play guitar =S

  • How abut Ana Vidov ?

    Who is more innovative ?

  • Hey man, what a coincidence, actually just saw her videos before reading your comment, and gotta say I love Ana's playing, I dont know about who is more innovative, cause I guess all these stuff is not theirs, but love the feeling with what she plays, so soft :) and precise, right now listening to the presentation in the Kennedy Center, in her website, what a delight =), well, I guess both are impressive, Su Meng seems to play faster, but, I think I would rather see Ana live, both are great =)

  • Which sucks so much she is gonna play in my home town, but im abroad agrr !!!, the same happened when I was looking for MUSE concerts hahaha. but now my brother told me about a director he likes and that will present in the film festival of the city I live now haha, so I guess its just funny coincidences

  • wow

  • I think her tone and tempo variations are exceptional and convey the piece extremely well. If this is "sterile" and "too technical" then John Williams must be positively robotic......

  • Technically AND musically of the highest caliber. Most people here have no idea what they're talking about.

  • The ability of this young woman to play the guitar is uncanny. I haven't seen Parkening, Bream, Williams, or even Segovia, play with such an mouth-dropping dexterity. Someone here said "too technical" isn't that the point. Usually the ones who say that, they can't be that technical even in their dreams!

  • Concerning transcriptions of this and other pieces. I have Anton Stingls' transciptions of all lute pieces ascribed to JSB (The editing company is (was?) Valter Benjamin, Leipzig). Stingls' version of the BWV 998 is not transposed. The 6th string is tuned to Eb. It is not more difficult to play than other transcriptions. And it makes a great addition to the Eb major repertiore for classical guitar since the only other piece I know of is a study in Eb major by F. Sor.

  • too much technical?? of course it is. is it a blame to be technical? concerning emotions, i swear she has more emotions than expected from a chineese young guitarist. you can say so about jie or anna but su has something different and special..

  • Just a correction. The publisher was Friedrich Hofmeister in Leipzig. (The Benjamin publishing house were/are (?) localized to Hamburg). Unfortunately Stingl's edition, from 1951, is out of print.

  • PS Allegro BWV 998 - just amazing

  • that she plays it more or less (better) than someone else is not the point - her version is better than mine - in all, JS BACH is the point here in these matters

  • whenever I hear beauty the listener and performer disappears and blazing light remains..

even if she flubbed every note

    I would still get goosebumps

    ( and I do )

    BACH LIVES FOREVER!

  • She definitely has a great deal of talent. But, her playing is still a little technical (at least at the age of this recording) and lacks the expression of someone like Parkening. It will be interesting to watch her mature as a musician. I think she has the potential to become one of the all time greatest guitarists.

  • dasgroover, you said the words i was looking for.... heard it about...100times and at each time, same pure sensation... well life seems to get meaning then...

  • I like it played with a capo in the 1st fret. It sounds E flat then what is much closer to the original.

  • Why not transcribe it yourself. It's not that hard to do!

  • Hahaha!!!!

  • yes,.. exactly what I AM doing :)

  • whoever finds a transcription of this PLEASE do humanity a favor and post a reference !

    karemsecret -

yes, she bends time/space around my heart

  • lie jie did also well this masterpiece, but su has something special. it seems she overflies space around her, and time seems to pass according to her willing. when she accelerates, just listen and close ur eyes...

  • the allegro just rips!

    goosebumps!!

    Bravo!!!

  • She has sweaty hands like I do!
