jkkmobile makes a valid point about how i would feel if i crashed into a child, a wife or knocked an older person in a wheel chair into the water and all suffered grevious bodily harm. this crash has been a good wake up call to think of how hard an impact an eye can take from a spinning blade. i remember the day i taped a razor blade to a 1.5 volt electric engine and put six volts into it. 9 school friends crowded around looking at the experiment in 1984. ouch was a near miss from a splatter mo
@gurcsik I actually apologized on the video that I buggered up the filming. Having said that you can see it pitch up and go out of frame. In all honestly I can only do the best I can.
You really should not fly over people.. While FPV is fun and great hobby, safety should always come first. There is just no way to justify the cool factor flying above the beach when it may hit someones child.
@mhyotyni I will definitely have a kit for flying over water next time. I am thinking of small lengths of 'floating Noodles' split along the length, placed over the arms and cable tied into position. If my Gopro works its going to live in the waterproof case from now on..
Damn that sucks! I hope you get it back. Word of advice from someone who FPVs helicopters over water. Put floats on it, and if you ever have to ditch in the water it is just a little swim out to get it. When you get it back, soak it in a tub full of DISTILLED WATER for 3 HOURS, then Put it in a tub FULL OF UNCOOKED RICE for 3 DAYS. then throw the battery away and everything should work just fine. I lost one of mine in the ocean and did as above and the only thing ruined was the battery.
@just4playin1 hey I did the distilled water thing and then washed the parts down with plastic safe electrical Contact cleaner spray. I noticed some white powdery residue forming around some of the electrical components so I sprayed a coat of WD40 over the top.. They look much better now. Might grab some rice tomorrow to get rid of the remaining moisture.
Wow the gopro was even in the waterproof case too! I have seen a video where some guy drops his gopro in the ocean and was recover a few months later still working! If i were you, I would hire some scuba divers to get it. Sure beats $300 for a gopro and some parts you could scavenge off the tricopter. Good Luck!
@BMSWEB G'day... Ouch ! It would be a rather long shot to find it now, possibly due to it's having a high Surface-Area to Mass ratio, & being light enough to fly ; it may not have Much negative Buoyancy at all, so it would sink, slowly & fluttering about rather than going straight down...(?). Then, it would waft along the bottom in any Current. And Crater Lakes have steepish slopes..., don't they ? I still wanna fly th' Phonecam on a $100 3 Ch R/C Heli !
I'm surprised it wasn't recovered. At 2:33 you can see the last of the splash in the water
where it hit, which was almost directly between you and the buoy. For whatever it's worth, a couple years ago I put my tricopter in the water upside down immersing *all* my gear for an hour, including an uncased GoPro. Only lost a motor, and a couple ESCs. Everything else worked including the GoPro. RC Rx eventually gave up, but much of that gear I'm still using today.
Condolences to JB. I've developed a rule for myself, if landing crosses your mind then come straight home and land. Might have saved him. Not really much point in finding it without a waterproof case on the GoPro, but I guess it helps the healing process to get it back.
Hey Paul you won't believe this but all that time I thought you missed the splashdown..I just saw the video closely last night..I cant believe I was searching all the way next to the bouy. Anyway leaving soon. Wish me luck.
1. stop whining about flyinh over people. a tricopter is far safer than a nitro plane of any kind of heli.
2. You dickhead, if you attached soda bottles with tape you would still have your tricopter!

@pokies100 Why would you tape a razor blade to a motor? seems like less an experiment and more an adventure in darwinism

So sad.. Have you considered about attaching some small floaters to the airframe, just large enough to keep the machine on the surface?

Other than "fly away", this would be about my biggest fear for my Hexakopter. That's why I don't fly over water!
