Love Frank & Dean! I respect the talent of Judy Garland (& her daughter Liza Menelli) but their style of singing is too over the top for me! Give me Ella, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, etc. any day! :)
I think it was around 1960 or 1961, because Judy was still plump from an incident in 1958 or 59 when she went into a coma from liver failure. They had to drain about 20 pounds of fluid from her and she was still plump like this when she left the hospital. This was probably her first TV appearance after that. They had a lot of fun doing this and it shows.
@ClarkKent2024 You got that right! You worded it perfectly and they were in awe of this great singer that these top singers of the day actually willingly took the back seat. Judy had more charisma when it comes to live performances and the camera caught her face and you just could never help just watching her while she was in front of the camera and not see any other star. Since childhood Judy has always captivated me and My favorite look of Judy is from 1963-64..
I bought this on VHS a few years ago, but was startled to see it colorized. I much prefer it this way: classic b&w. The fact that it is a show quality videotape is precious enough. And a great time capsule, for it was this special that led to Judy's single-season TV series- all slimmed down and gorgeous. Thanks for this.
Do you notice how the camera jiggled when it comes to a stop? Today they would do it again. I like the older way better. Also, notice that they take a few steps backwards before the final walk forward? That may have been to give them a bit more room before they came to the end of the specially built stage. The camera and crane wound up on the runway that extended from the stage.
@iknowrebekah Jackie Susann's husband Irving Mansfield was a TV producer in the 50s and early 60s and was privy to a lot of information, which he passed on to Jackie, who, herself tried her hand at a showbiz career. So she knew a lot about Judy, and the Neely character in "Valley" was pure Judy, despite a few cosmetic changes.
Judy hated dressing this way, in what she called a "fat lady's" jacket over a black sack dress. A mere year later, she'd be thin and glamorous, but what a price she paid for that.
This was from her 1962 Special. Watch out for the colorized version! When they show Judy's mouth it black and white even though everything else isn't.
oh, these videos are so precious !

She's the only one that could have ever gotten Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra to be back up singers.

Frank must have been pretty short, as Judy was under five feet! Great stuff!

Frank was around 5'8". I'm not sure about Dino. Probably around 6'. Judy was 4'11", but she was wearing HUGE heels if you look closely.
