Mike Pender left in the mid-80s and formed Mike Pender's Searchers, which is still playing gigs, as are The Searchers with John McNally and Frank Allen.
As regards this clip, the drummer is definitely John Blunt, who replaced Chris Curtis.
@loupascarelli No, you're thinking of Mike Pinder who was with the Moody Blues in their earlier days. He was the one who sang on Go Now. Regards, Alan.
Corvus13 thanks for your reply,I know he went solo I was inquiring for what reason, did he have a fallout with the others or was it far some other reason
The 1st song I ever played on guitar when I was 12. The 2nd was Proud Mary by CCR :-) What was your 1st guitar song to learn on? This song seems so mellow now, but back then? whew. :-) Still I would have preferred playing something classic rock or blues, even folk, to this. It was the only music chart I had for the learning guitar booklet.
JohnPaulSaylor is part right, James Blunts Father retired as a Colonel in the Army Air Corps. The real spelling for his name is Blount but James changed it to Blunt for professional reasons
@juanbbien he didnt tell anybody but his new manager he was leaving john mcnally took him to court and won he can only call it mike penders searchers and searchers cant be in bigger letters or a differant color it was supposed to be for some big controversial reason but it was never disclosed what they actual reason was my theory is that he didnt want to split the money 4 ways just pay sidemen less money and keep the lions share
@spacepatrolman tony jackson complained thast when he had a reunion weith him he didnt pay him much money the lead singer of the vouges can only use the name in pennsylvania according to a court descion moby grape had to call it mosley grape because a lawyer owned the name
@Chimbo65 Wha? The guy who wrote "You're Beautiful"? I think you're wrong. His dad was a British pilot, and one of main reasons James joined the army. But you're right that he was with the Searchers for 4 years.
You can definitely hear that this is a Leiber/ Stoller. It sounds so much different then Needles and Pins.. a good thing I think...awesome song though up to now I never really new who did it... ;-)
@spacepatrolman Look for Mike Pender on Wikipedia. It says "In his early years, Pender worked at a guitar shop as a day job in between playing nightly gigs with The Searchers. "
I love how powerful the live performances are on this show....I've seen The Kinks, The Troggs and The Searchers! Did The Beatles or The Rolling Stones ever play this show? I haven't found a video of them. :)
The drummer on this clip is John Blunt who was with the band for their last few UK chart successes before he was replaced by Billy Adamson, who appears on the aforementioned Sire recordings. He subsequently left and Eddie Rothe who stayed for a few years before leaving to be house-husband to UK singer and TV celeb, Jane McDonald. I'm not sure of the name of their current drummer.
Why do this bands always speed the tempo up of the original song. This is much better slower and with the proper middle 8. Its like they say lets get it over with quick the pubs are open soon. If they do not enjoy playing it makes one wonder why they bother . anyone see my point..
@kellyadvent I don't think they speed up the song just to get it over with, I think they were trying to do something different, as you can see the drummer is a big Keith Moon fan so maybe they wanted to match his energy. Besides if they were just rushing the song wouldn't have fit together as neatly as it did here.
Chris Curtis was a powerhouse on the drums and the vocals. John Blunt was very "mooney" and a great drummer also. I just feel that the rest of The Searchers left were still stuck in 1964.
@geoabe302: I think that your comments are valid, especially the last one. It seems that they kept up the black suit and tie persona until about 1967. Great band, though.
@1947studebaker1 Have you ever heard the two albums they recorded on Sire in 1979 & 1980? They are terrific, it's a shame they weren't huge hits. Perhaps if MTV were around then maybe they would have promoted the videos. You can pick up both albums on a 2 for 1 CD from Raven called The Sire Sessions. The Searchers proved that they could still rock with the best of them.
@nyrainbow-do you know what show this was? There used to be an equally good live clip of the Searchers from the German show Beat Beat Beat, but it got taken down.
Thanks for the post! Can I love both Chris Curtis and John Blunt? Never would have thunk that Moon-drumming would work with the Searchers - but it sure does!
