No Cenk, you CANNOT make that argument on both sides.
A doctor has a duty, and if he does not want to perform that duty he should NOT be a doctor. And if he refuses to perform his duty he should pay for it.
That's how it should work. People should do their jobs and follow the law. If they have crazy beliefs then they should either put them aside on the professional level or not do a job where other people depend on them.
Of course after Cenk proceeds to make the same point, but that's something I find kind of maddening about Cenk.
Cenk seems to want to straddle the moderate side to appease the mighty cult of moderacy (that holds that the truth lies between reason and insanity, instead of just with reason.) Or perhaps it's his being an ex-conservative. But Cenk needs to take things a step further. Because I think that's what he really feels anyway.
Just go that bit further. Fuck the cult of moderate.
The more the right wing tries to regulate morality, the more the longer they are going to be the minority in government.
It happened in 2006, it happened in 2008. And as a pansexual male ( meaning I go for anyone I'm attracted too, regardless of sex and gender ), I don't want a bunch of crusty middle aged/eldery morality fucks telling me whom I can or can not be with.
What if your morals are that a gay person isn't entitled to medical care? And a person, who is known to be gay by the pharmacist/doctor, comes in for medical treatment? Does that count?
Giving people the power to use their "morals" (so easily made up) as an excuse to exercise prejudice is sick and dangerous.
Also, i'm so sick of conservatives being "pro-life" but anti contraception. If you're going to limit women's rights, at least compromise a little.
So, if a doctor decides on his 'morals' that he doesn't have to help a person due to his religion, race, sexuality, etc. can he just 'decide' to not render services?
Most of this ppl are women. This is ridiculious. Also, Rep. Dont hate women. Were just a group beliefs. Its not like you have to listen. Also dem. are the ones who actully wanted slavery, just a thought. Idk how it changed. But Reps. fought for equal rights.
This is just so wrong on so many levels!! Why Bush would do something so vile to make him an even worse President is beyond belief!! And I say if it did not meet the deadline, then it should not exist!!

I am not sure if you are referencing abortion or the "abortion pill", but I am assuming you are talking about the pill. Just so you know, the pill works by releasing massive amounts hormones that cause the woman's egg to be dispelled before fertilization takes place. So really, no life has been taken. The phrase "abortion pill" was invented to turn conservatives off from its use.
I swear, I hate Bush so fucking much. You're telling me that women should be forced to handle a child that they don't want after they've been raped?? That's INSANE!!!!
We have cheap contraception vending machines in schools and colleges here, and in supermarkets and petrol stations and almost everywhere, so it should never be a problem. Don't you have them in the USA?
I think this is referring to BC pills and pescription based forms of contraception (that would have to go through a pharmacist), rather than "off the shelf" condoms/spermicide.
Oh yes.. This is a WONDERFUL law. >.> So great. Fuck birth control, who needs it?
I agree with the fact that they Picked their profession, they have to live with it now. I understand wanting to help people, well giving out BC WILL help people. Trust me, I know.
You do realize Birth control is used these days for MORE than just not getting pregnant. Many women, like me, have irregular periods. ( this is an issue TYT didn't touch ) Well guess what birth control does for me? It REGULATES my period. Without it I can bleed for MONTHS on end. THAT much loss of blood and tissue is HARMFUL to a person. So you're telling me that if my Doctor's a Catholic, I'm shit out of luck and put myself at serious risk, because of it?
@angelicexcel here here me too, if it wasn't for the pill i would be miserable 21 days out of every month, not to mention hemorrage agonizing cramps and violant mood swings thank goodness for the pill and thank goodness in my country no one would stand for such a draconian idiotic law not that the christian right haven't tried to pass similar laws here in Australia just that if they did there popularity rating would slide down so fast they would be kicked out of office so fast career over.
You my friend...are a fucking shit-for-brains idiot! How can doctors who take the Hippocratic Oath, which says that it is the MORAL duty to help those in medical need, not give out contraceptives based on morals? Fuck.
Be the possibility off people seek or poorer or don't respect the choice of the person.
First, don't harm is an Hippocratic Oath: If the birth could harm the baby or the mom, don't do it.
And, of course, by the same argument you might said "if it hurt humanity, give the birth"... But, you forget we are 7 billions: We don't need to care about humanity that much now, we are "save" there... The exception is a major cataclysm, but some mores baby will not save humanity in this scenario.
What if the doctor has a moral problem with treating Arabs and Muslims? or Jews? or Mormons? Or maybe a local pharmacist cannot go against her moral conscience in selling Viagra? or condoms or sexual lubricants ... How bouts dem apples? If I were a pharmacist I wouldn't sell Prozac. I'd tell patients to seek balance and peace in their lives through prayer.
If you want to know what right those people trying to get contraceptives have, it would be to go somewhere else that would be more than happy to take their money in return for a service. You are the one with the idea of subverting ones rights. You want to force someone against their will to perform a service or sale instead of saying it is the responsibility of the customer to find a seller. Do I have a right to oil because it exists? NO! I pay for my oil and gas and I have to find it.
The point to this isn't your right to sell or not to sell something. He's talking about pharmacists and doctors. They picked their profession. As a Doctor or pharmacist, you have responsibilities. They knew that when they did med school or their B.A. If they had a moral problem with selling contraceptives or whatever, then they should have picked a different profession. Its like saying, I have a problem selling liquor due to my religion, but I still open up a bar. Its stupid and its wrong.
I think that you have the right to not do anything... you want someone to be forced, in a free society, to do something they don't want to do. That is ludicrous. Where in the constitution did it say a damn thing about contraceptives being a right to all people that want them. If I am a business owner and I don't want to perform a service for you, I have every right not to. It would be an attack on my rights to force me against my will to perform a function like this. Damn socialist
I think we would be able to get that shit taken out through the Supreme Court. I mean honestly... The ONLY moral ground you can REALLY go with on contraception is religion. There is no secular, non-religious, state based, reason that you can say "Birth Control is bad"
We are FAR past the point to where we need to breed to survive and there are more than enough people that want kids to null that argument.
Just watch. By tomorrow, BushCo will push through a bunch of crap through the EPA, and the Forestry Dept (Heck, the Dept of Interior, in general) to wreck more to the advantage of his people.
And the excalation in western Pakistan? Just wants to kill bin Laden or his deputy before checking out of the White House. The diplomatic mess will be for Obama to clean up.
Can't wait to see all the federal convictions he pardons too.
Actually, I believe that both sides were against the initial plan. The revised version was adopted, yes. Personally, I think that most US House/Senate Democrats couldn't use a spine transplant.
Oh, one more thing - how old are you anyway? Such language shows neither class nor maturity.
They also have a right not to be a doctor that deals with abortions. And not to be doctors, period. If you disagree with abortions, why be involved with them? So you can refuse them? Isn't that a form of terrorism within Health Services? A form of sabotage?
I'm in a pharmacy school right now - we use our professional judgment to deny or suggest drugs for people based on their conditions - such as the merits of using an Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)Inhibitor versus an Angiontensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB) in patients with Hypertension.
But, to deny a patient a drug on so-called "moral" grounds but not on actual CLINICAL grounds - that is just unthinkable; it goes against the whole merit of the profession.
I live in North Dakota. I believe North Dakota's population has the highest percentage of people eager to tell you what your morals are and willing to enforce it with imprisonment.
How fucked up can people get? I wish someone would deny the proper care to my family because they don't believe in it. Like Cenk said, that's their JOB!!!!!!!!
...and as their job, I could totally see someone with flexible "morals" deciding they would rather clock out early than give a service/fill a prescription. That is how lots of people are on the job - looking for loopholes to get out of work. In this care, it affects lives too much to allow it.
I would oppose the new law based on due process. The law allows one person to enforce "moral law" on another person in a way that can have substantial physical and financial impact on the victim, and the victim does not have access due process of the legal system to argue the case--not to mention that pharmacists are not trained to be judges and are not certified to be legal or moral scholars.
That is COMPLETELY insane. Only in America, I swear.
Just goes to show these people don't really worry about sex because of the possible consequences (such as STD's and unwanted pregnancies) but rather about the sex in itself.
They want to CONTROL other people's personal lives.
If you have a moral problems with contraceptions - just don't use them yourself. But don't make it an obstacle for people to practice protected sex - it's none of your business what people do in their bedrooms.
So many Christians are jackasses, and Cenk is right, I live in North Carolina and there are pharmacies around here that will deny women contraceptives (morning-after pill, other birth control). Discraceful in my opinion, anyone who denies someone a product that they can purchase legally should be fired.
Contraception has nothing to do with abortion. You are not killing anything, so why the hell is it a problem? I'm Christian, my family are hardcore catholics, and they see nothing wrong with contraception as long as it isn't abused continuously.
It's always great having someone elses beliefs, derived from religous orgins, imposed on the rest of us. Thankyou Bush admin. This is also jacked up for couples who don't want a kid yet because the economy sucks and they're trying to stay afloat paying for a house or something.
thankgod obama will squash this evil fucking law. how the hell can the right scream and cry about the phoney sexism sarah palin faced during the election and sit on their hands while bush enforces this illegal law that screams with sexism? real sexism.
This is a hidden right wing agenda: force an increased birth rate on the population. The business wing of the GOP knows that economically the US cannot afford a declining birth rate because of very low population density: our suburban sprawl is unsustainable. Politically the social conservative right wing w their nativists & white supremacists cannot accept illegal immigration, the business class's solution to filling up this growing US productivity demand due to the mushrooming suburban sprawl
but in reality, where is the only place you can go to get an abortion? an abortion clinic, planned parenthood..........im sure the doctors that believe in pro-choice will want to work there. and you can get your meds from there too
why does youtube always put anti-liberal propaganda on your channel in the advertisements? wouldnt you want to advertise to people who dont already hate you?
This is why I'm atheist. It's also why I now live in Europe. People talk about radical Islam destroying the USA, but we can all see that Christianity has beaten Islam to it. Hopefully Barack Obama won't have too many deals to keep to throw rubbish like this out of th window...
I work at a Pharmacy in OH and one of the pharmacist that works at my store allready denies the morning after pill to people. We have gotten complaints from it but since our company needs pharmacists they "push that under the rug." But, what do they care. The CO. is making billions in profit and the pharmacist is making 130k. I quess people like you and i get fucked over...as always.
Man, I hope Obama reverses this law as soon as possible. If your morals prevent you from providing certain services (as is totally understandable), choose a different line of work!
If you can't put your religion aside to help people, then don't become a doctor or a pharmacist. I can sort of understand the abortion thing, but only under non-emergency situations.
it's hilarious that people on the right equate the morning after pill w/ an abortion. the pill doesn't even WORK if an egg has already been fertilized, AND women who aren't given the morning after pill (usu rape victims) add greatly to the number of abortions performed yearly!!!
allowing docs to self-interpret their hippocratic oaths is def a slippery slope and unfair b/c it doesn't work both ways, i.e. ALLOWING a doc to give abortions if he is morally opposed to anti-choice.
Don't forget that the right is also for abstinence only. Their stupid enough to tell people to simply not have sex until their married then when they do get married they are supposed to contraceptives that they have not been taught about.
I NEVER want to hear a Republican bitch about big government EVER AGAIN!!!!! This is the UNLTIMATE big government...So much so it extends to my uterus...it's MY UTERUS!!!!! GOD this infuriates me. If a fetus is a person, give them a social security # and let me claim the 9 months of pregnancy on my taxes. There should be a conception certificate...not a BIRTH certificate..GOD I can't WAIT til that man is OUT of the white house..
This is insanity! It will include, not just the morning after pill, but also condoms and the oral contraceptives. Bet these same *ssholes will happily hand out erectile dysfunction medication. Is this 1920?
This shouldn't even be an issue of rape... this is an issue of Privacy and if my Doctor gives me a 'script for a specific medication, the pharmacist should STFU and give the medicine. Act professionally and do your job!
its a pill you can take in the case of an emergency, like if you had sex and the condom broke and you weren't on birth control. basically you go get it from a pharmacist within like 72hours (though its a thing to do asap) and take it. Then there should be no unwanted baby trouble.
you're serious right? how about a pill you take "the morning after"? Usualy you use contraceptives before and/or during, and this one you can use "the morning after". Pretty self explanatory :)
The Morning after pill is the ULTIMATE proof of the disgusting and reprehensible level of blatant hypocrisy by evangelical right wing scumbags.
It is a pill that can be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse and it PREVENTS pregnancy by preventing the "moment of conception" that the christians scream about being the moment life begins.
It blocks the egg & sperm from combining. AND YET THE CHRISTIANS OPPOSE IT!!!!!!!!!
Well I'm not a woman so I can't say how I would feel if, after being raped, some prick fuck pharmacist got all self-righteous and judgemental bcuz of his precious little holy book.
BUT I do have 3 younger sisters and IF that shit happened to any of them I would find out where that pharmacist lived and teach him/her the meaning of pain, suffering, loss, and inhuman physical agony.
I would treat the pharmacist as badly as I would treat the rapist.
i'd sue the shit out of the pharmacy and get the prick fired for his refusal.if you have some moral reason for not dispensing medicine or not treating a patient becaose of moral reasons then you picked the wrong job to do. you don't get to pick whom you serve in some professions doctors are one such profession and pharmacists another. same applies to police and firemasn how would we fare if these profesionals got to choose whom they would serve or not serve.
no fucken man should tell a woman what she should do with her own body. If a man does, why don't you fucken cut your balls off and stop trying to get a girl pregnant!
sorry, but I really think that´s not a question of gender.
A female shouldn´t tell a female either, what she should do with her own body.
Sadly in history not only men opressed women, but also females, e.g. some mothers in china binding the feet of their girls until they where crippled, even though the father didn´t like it.
u no i was just thinking outside the box but if this was muslims who refused service to serve pork or show their faces for drivers license because of "moral" convictions we would be outraged and pll would send death notes to their homes. interesting how things work out isn't it?
I'm confused. In regards to the pharmacist, how is this new? Theoretically, if a pharmacist didn't approve of contraceptives/morning after pill couldn't they simply not carry those items? Is there some law that says that pharmacists HAVE to have those items in stock? If not, then this could have been going on all along. Besides, what pharmacist is going to bother buying contraceptives but refuse to sell them to people? I don't see how this law changes anything.
I thought medical personnel are supposed to help people irregardless of their personal thoughts or feelings. They are supposed to think of the well being of the patient not of their own thoughts about the matter. Not impose it on others. For fucks sake how am I to trust medical personal who thinks that his own morality is more important to my own health.
*typos because I'm pissed -- I was a volunteer at a PP clinic and have seen girls come in after their own fathers raped them -- their own "religious" fathers.
This is a non-issue for abortion. Not all doctors can perform abortions, only those trained in the procedure can. There is no existing law that can force doctors to perform any procedure they don't want to perform. The issue here is that a doctor can not selectively refuse to give an abortion based on biases toward the patient. As far as pharmacology is concerned, doctors make judgments about the use of drugs everyday. Doctors are in the business of applying judgment everyday.
This is an outrageous and unconstitutional law.. whats next, the clerk at the front won't sell you condoms cause the imaginary friend in his head disapproves? ANYONE CAN MAKE UP THEIR OWN RELIGION THEN CLAIM SOMETHING OFFENDS THEM!! Did they not think about where this could lead? "I can't sell you this Thyroid replacement drug that keeps you alive, one of the ingredients in it goes against my morals.. enjoy your death!" See where this leads?
totally agree Cenk it is crap that they can be moral when they choose to. because i bet you everything i own if it was there daughter that got raped they wont give a fuck about morals. PLUS the morning after pill wont kill a fetus it is a last chance stopper if the egg is fertilized its to late it can only stop it before they meet (egg + sperm)
I don't think that a pharmacy should be required by law to carry any particular product, and contraceptives are just that. They are not a right, they are a thing that you have to buy.
However, an employer should have every right to fire a pharmacist who doesn't want to be helpful to customers like that.
imagine if the web masters decided they couldn't maintain the website because of their moral issues. Or the people who ship contraceptives won't do it. Because they believe it's wrong.
Besides, you still have to wait forever for the things to come. And when you have a rape victim sitting there waiting for the morning after pill to get mailed to her... By the time it gets there it's pretty much abortion time. The pill won't help.
Seriously WTF? Do they have any clue just how many people on birth control not because they don't want to get pregnant but because they have some other health reason!!!! Bush is an idiot and any faith and good will I still had remaining in him has just just gone out the window.

Firstly, not every pharmacist is a man, and many female pharmacists support this law. The law means to protect a pharmacist's conscience from administering contraceptives that not only function as abortifacients (i.e., they don't allow a fertilized egg to attach to a uterine wall), but also, they frustrate the human nature. It is natural for a woman to be fertile. It is unnatural to take synthetic hormones that inhibit fertility. To an informed Christian, this goes against Divine design.
haha... yes we do, as we know the history of Saint Nicolas.
Let me clarify, I am an agnostic theist. I believe there is a higher power/purpose that we may call 'divine', but admit there is also no way in this physical plane to prove this is really the case.
Fair enough then. I don't really have an answer for that.
It's just the 'true agnostics' that really piss me off. The ones who insist on having no opinion whatsoever and then being totally smug about it. I realize that it can't be proved one way or the other, it's just irritating as hell when people refuse to consider the evidence because there's no conclusive proof.
I suppose it's "divine design" for us to breed ourselves into unsustainability, which will be met with m(b)illions dying horrific and painful deaths and possibly concluding just as nicely with a complete extinction.
Imagine that divine plan where there won't be any of us left to ponder the existence of imaginary beings who have these imaginary plans that "informed Christians" invoke to support their unjustifiable stance on an issue.
It's none of the pharmacist's business what the contraceptives are used for. Some women take them primarily to help regulate their periods, the relieve cramps or even to help clear up acne. The reason she is taking them is between her and her doctor. If pharmacists have a problem with administering contraceptive, then they should find another profession.
Can u not get past your religion to clearly see what the consequences would be if women were forced to birth their entire adult lives. Honestly a large % of us would never marry and those with daughters would advise them to never marry. The life you envision for women is dark. My ability to choose career, travel, freedom is so important to take that would cause a flood of women out this country and the men will follow and then the 25% of you left could see how well that works out for you.
when i had my second and last child, i had to write a letter to the hospital, requesting to get my tubes tied. c'mon, are we in the dark ages? asking permission to tie my own damn tubes. SICK!!
Fuck that, any pharmacist or doctor that refuses services should lose their license. Admitedly I don't advise any woman to get an abortion from a reluctant doctor but that birth control bit is bullshit.
Bush, what a scum bag. Raiding the coffers and poisoning the well before he leaves. I hope him and Cheney spend the rest of their lives fighting lawsuits for what they have done to America.
loryn...thats wonderful for them...but they dont have the right nor do you to push that down anyone elses throat thats the real point here...dont miss it...life isnt usually loveley for women or children in a situation like that sad but true
those people are PROFESSIONAL health care providers. They have no business nor rights pass their professional conducts onto others basing on their personal beliefs.
If their jobs duties are in conflict with their religious beliefs, they should not only quit, but be fired.
conservatives are mean spirited SOB's who like to hide behind their "moral" and the bible...they don't give a damn about anyone else but themselves and their own situation....that's why they fight against civil rights issues, gay rights issues, women's rights etc
I know a few people who were products of rape. It's not as black and white as it may seem. The mothers of these people are very blessed to have them. Something precious actually came out of a horrid situation.
I hate these thumbs down :( I had a chance to be aborted (my mother is schizophrenic and I don't know my father) Thankfully I came to term... but really, I understand both sides of the issue a lot.
I agree with you. My best friend has had several abortions. I love her dearly and if i knew someone who was raped and aborted i wouldn't judge them for a second. It really isn't as black and white as it may seem and i get five thumbs down.
That maybe and what i said was also true. Idk why anyone would thumbs down a good ending to a terrible situation. It's as if they're pissed that these people *chose* to keep the baby.
What exactly did i say that caused five thumbs down? Something good came out of such a terrible thing? Does anyone begrudge them to keep their child? Choice means to keep or abort.
this pisses me off because some pricks about 5 or 6 thousand years ago had whacky fucking dreams about a space god than this shit can happen what the fuck
You know, I find it ironic what at the rate we are going, Obama is getting more assassination attempts and threats than Bush. Hah. Really fucking funny (not).
i don't quite understand your comment. are saying you are a proponent of the assassination of our new president? is that what your saying? if not, you should really be more clear in your comments.
I am saying that it is funny (in a sick and twisted way) that it seems more people want to kill Obama than Bush. Shouldn't it be reverse? And here I thought racism was dead.
My post was a (half)joke -- no one would be the official decider of whose morals are correct and whose aren't.
I don't think your analogy is accurate. Pharmacists do many things besides handing out contraceptives. Perhaps they became pharmacists to help people and make people healthy, which is a very moral cause, if you ask me. Stop trying to make things so black-and-white.
"Trickle down effect" then a war with terrorists, then we MOVE the war to IRAQ EVEN WHEN IT supposedly STARTED in Afganistan, THEN "weapons of mass distruction" (which WASN'T true) THEN the "nice message (along with the war) were we should "SPEND" to help those that died in 9/11, the failing economy, I mean WTF!!!! AND HE HONESTLY WANTS PEOPLE TO READ HIS MEMOIR!? DOES THE U.S Have to burn to he ground before the cons. and rebubs realize they should have kicked the man out YEARS AGO!?!

You my friend...are a fucking shit-for-brains idiot! How can doctors who take the Hippocratic Oath, which says that it is the MORAL duty to help those in medical need, not give out contraceptives based on morals? Fuck.
deckem17 3 years ago 3

I'd tell patients to seek balance and peace in their lives through prayer.
patriciaredstone 3 years ago 2
If you want to know what right those people trying to get contraceptives have, it would be to go somewhere else that would be more than happy to take their money in return for a service. You are the one with the idea of subverting ones rights. You want to force someone against their will to perform a service or sale instead of saying it is the responsibility of the customer to find a seller. Do I have a right to oil because it exists? NO! I pay for my oil and gas and I have to find it.
addfman 3 years ago
The point to this isn't your right to sell or not to sell something. He's talking about pharmacists and doctors. They picked their profession. As a Doctor or pharmacist, you have responsibilities. They knew that when they did med school or their B.A. If they had a moral problem with selling contraceptives or whatever, then they should have picked a different profession. Its like saying, I have a problem selling liquor due to my religion, but I still open up a bar. Its stupid and its wrong.
cowpoxz 3 years ago
I think that you have the right to not do anything... you want someone to be forced, in a free society, to do something they don't want to do. That is ludicrous. Where in the constitution did it say a damn thing about contraceptives being a right to all people that want them. If I am a business owner and I don't want to perform a service for you, I have every right not to. It would be an attack on my rights to force me against my will to perform a function like this. Damn socialist
addfman 3 years ago
I think we would be able to get that shit taken out through the Supreme Court. I mean honestly... The ONLY moral ground you can REALLY go with on contraception is religion. There is no secular, non-religious, state based, reason that you can say "Birth Control is bad"
We are FAR past the point to where we need to breed to survive and there are more than enough people that want kids to null that argument.

If you have a moral problems with contraceptions - just don't use them yourself. But don't make it an obstacle for people to practice protected sex - it's none of your business what people do in their bedrooms.

its a pill you can take in the case of an emergency, like if you had sex and the condom broke and you weren't on birth control. basically you go get it from a pharmacist within like 72hours (though its a thing to do asap) and take it. Then there should be no unwanted baby trouble.

i'd sue the shit out of the pharmacy and get the prick fired for his refusal.if you have some moral reason for not dispensing medicine or not treating a patient becaose of moral reasons then you picked the wrong job to do. you don't get to pick whom you serve in some professions doctors are one such profession and pharmacists another. same applies to police and firemasn how would we fare if these profesionals got to choose whom they would serve or not serve.

The problem with you trying to "sue the shit out of the pharmacy" is that you would'nt have any legal grounds to sue now thanks to bush.
The pharmacist would be legally in the clear now to deny your daughter or sister the morning after pill even if she had just been raped.
My answer is that should this happen to me regarding any of the women in my family I will resort to violence against the pharmacist.

A female shouldn´t tell a female either, what she should do with her own body.

I don't think that a pharmacy should be required by law to carry any particular product, and contraceptives are just that. They are not a right, they are a thing that you have to buy.
However, an employer should have every right to fire a pharmacist who doesn't want to be helpful to customers like that.
KarateKidX 3 years ago

imagine if the web masters decided they couldn't maintain the website because of their moral issues.

It's just the 'true agnostics' that really piss me off. The ones who insist on having no opinion whatsoever and then being totally smug about it. Anyway, unrelated rant over.
Freecell82 3 years ago
