East - Wes is a tribute to Wes Montgomery. Wes always played using his thumb and Eric shows that style at the beginning of this piece. Wes died in 1968 and continues to influence thousands of guitarists.
the way he touches that guitar to achieve that insane tone if an expierienced musician had never heard of eric johnson before he or she woulda thought that sound was coming from a gibson es-175
sounds like a very updated George Benson at the beginning. I must confess, that this whole cd is likely the very best piece of music I have ever heard. Makes me want to pick up my Les- then throw it down. Thank you EJ, for re-inventing what music can really mean to an astute listener.
The Angel Gabriel appears in front of you , and he has a message: God will allow you to instantly to that of Eric Johnson. The price: someone in the world you don't know will instantly die of a heart attack, and God absolves you of responsibility for that death. Do you take the deal?
@98MGS I agree, my favorite part of the song. A great example of how to write PERFECT music on the guitar without the need to shred, even though that is fully within the capabilities of EJ. He understands less is more...
At first I thought it sounded like elevator music, turns out it was actually two Victoria's Secret models losing their virginity to a fender strat, truly beautiful music, unique in it's own amazing way, agreed?
@TheFigueroa007 Yeah, right? I can't even get a good Wes tone on my jazzbox, and he gets one out of a Strat! I guess that's why he's the King of Tone...
@HandMane yeah, I think it's the only thing he took from the Wes style. it's a very good song but not a very good tribute to Wes. But it's fun to play even if the lick at 1:29 is realy hard.
Man the chords he uses! Eric Johnson is one of the best guitarists of all time! How do bands with no talent like Green Day or rappers like Flo Rida get so much attention? Seriously?! What's this world coming too.
Gorgeous and emersive...Erick is a guitarists guitarist. He will always rank at the very top as someone who can produce one of the most unforgettable sets you'll ever have the pleasure of witnessing. Erick Johnson, Steve Morse, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour across the last 40 years have been my favorites.
I actually saw this Austin City Limits Show when it first aired. I was getting dressed ready to meet my friends for a night on the town when by accident I was clicking the channels and wa la !!! I always remembered that show and about 5 years ago while at Walmart, wa la the whole entire show for sale on dvd. $10.00 and I was one happy man. I never get tired of watching it. I love that jacket he has on. I had once chance to seen him in New Orleans but as fate would have it I missed the show
@earlsworld70117 I did the same thing!!! I was flipping through the channels before I went out and he was at the start of Cliffs Of Dover... I dropped everything I was doing and watched the entire show before I left!!! Incredible show!!! Most underated guitarist ever!
i know, its insane. he picks with the same hand he hits the harmonic with. another guy that does this a lot is Andy McKee, another phenomenal musician
@freakkout1 isn't his Signature Strat based on a 1957 Strat? Honestly, the '57 is said to be one of the best years for the strat. Hence the reason why he uses it.
i can hear a hint of SRV in there in a few places..awesome song

"Wes" Stands for Wes Montgomery? He took his octave stye at the beginning, maybe he got inspiration from him for this tune

@HandMane wes montgomery had a song called "bumpin on sunset" that had to be the inspiration for this. you can find it on youtube.

i've often wondered that myself. if you check out him doing trademark live he does it there too but he hits the strings above the pickups. amazing.
pizzulo81 2 years ago
yes. it's because the pickup is the octave of the 12 fret.
