I've witnessed a couple of towers that were demolished by tornadoes...one was at the last station I worked for...noticed it was off the air...nothing unusual there...when I went in the "boss" said the engineer was on the way...I told him it wouldn't do any good. He started to cuss me out when I told him to walk outside...he did....I asked him to look in the direction of the tower...where it wasn't...Learned several new words that day!!
something similar to this happened in north texas. a blackhawk helicopter slammed into a tower during thick fog. the light on top of the tower was burned out so they couldnt see the tower till it was too late. no survivors.
I would like to clarify the information regarding this accident being that this was two miles from my office. out the back windows I could see all three near 2000 ft. towers.
The Blackhawk took off from Ft. Hood, TX in-route to Texarkana, TX and flying under VFR conditions. About half way between the airfield and the accident site the conditions became IFR with the heavy fog from the ground to nearly 2500 ft AGL...
The pilots were in the process of changing there flight plan from VFR to IFR and also asking for radar flight following while they transited the area of all the 2000 ft towers... They were flying at 1400-1600 ft AGL.. They did not strike the tower, they struck the towers 6th level guy wire approximately 200-250 feet from the tower..
NOT ALL lights on the tower were working and there was a NOTAM on file about it.. Regardless of the lights working or not, the tower was completely shrouded in heavy fog and it was determined that the pilot was found at fault form flying lower than the flight plan and was approximately 30 miles off course..
.the tower did not fall, it did have damage from flying debris, the guy wire that was struck was severely cut but held together.. took four months to replace and repair the damage to the tower.
All you fucking idiots that keep saying "Taxpayer foot the bills" are fucking ignorant. Insurance covered this. Now the govt was responsible for part of this, and rightly so should take the burden. As far as it being a failed demolition. You have no idea what went on with the demolition and why it was set up the way it was. They knew before they lit it off there was a good chance of losing both towers. All the guy wires were layered between each other and no way to undo what is done.
@TheMrBlinx That involves a heavy crane-like object called a Gin-Pole at the top, right where the helicopter hit. Probably just enough weight to make it crumble. Plus, this was more fun to watch.
@jrcstudios Okay, thanks for that info. I was wondering how they got those towers built anyway. I just watched a nearly 2,000 foot tower collapse in Houston, and was wondering how they were hossing those sections up. It was clear there was no helicopter lifting. Yeah, it is more interesting watching it crash down. Too bad it took out a perfectly good tower.
@TheMrBlinx It was much safer to demolish it, and much cheaper. It could take months to take something like that apart, and with the possibility of it killing people if it decided to collapse.
This was supposed to be a well controlled demolition, done by the best company in the business, but something did not work as planned. Think of this example every time that someone tells you that 9/11 was an inside job and that the Twin Towers were taken down by controlled demolition.
Uhhh, Ladies and gentlemen, due to the fact that a dumbass tore down the WALB transmitter, we will now have to ask you to please open up those big wallets and purses that you love so much and send them to WALB Studios in order to return programming to you... No Offense intended at this joke. If it does offend you, then i'm sorry.

I feel bad for animals when it comes to demolition. Having to move tree to tree, shrub to shrub. When will these humans stop tearing crap down and making all that noise? Or coming home from a nice feast.... "OH GREAT, MY NEST IS DESTROYED. Honey, pack your bags, we're migrating to Brazil".... "WTF, AGAIN??!"
A military helicopter hit the very top of the WFXL tower, rendering it not repairable................ why waste the time and resources? did you read the description?
@fortlansing Haa! It never fails that some stupid redneck is around to blurb out some stupid remark. There should be an IQ test prior to letting people near people with recording devices.
the white pufs of smoke in the air, are shape charges that snaped the guy wires on the tower. the wires had to be cut at that point because the 2 towers had interlaced guy wires. but 1 wire wraped around anouther and 2 towers come down for the price of one.
@jrcstudios I was there. I shot tape for the entire demolition preparations. The test shot cutting thru the guy wire cables, the live broadcast etc. The whole shebang. That was a long week of hard work for the demolition crew and myself.
I was watching the broadcast on walb at the time and the reactions of the anchors was pretty funny. They were clearly not entirely expecting the WALB tower to come down.
