  • wow!

  • Thanks for the positive energy. Slam doesn't have to all angst and futility.

  • We all could use a little bit of tomorrow :D

  • this was fucking amazing

  • "Tip 'em if you can."

For some reason, that line resonates really well with me.

It embodies something near and dear to me, but I can't seem to articulate what it is.

I think this poem is a success because of this: it elicits a feeling, and a damned good one, at that.

  • @walnutshellwarrior It's almost as if he's saying you may not be able to tip them, because you're just as broke as these kids. But if you have the money to spare, tip them. It really focuses on the importance of "the little things". Pretend YOU'RE a child selling ice cream and someone tips you. That means something.

  • @jonahharper I think you've articulated it! :D

  • This is like a really good song that I can't stop listening to.

  • Incredible man

  • WHOAH, this is awesome, and i HATE poetry type stuff.

  • I cried. It's almost like a perfect piece of art. So beautiful.

  • That was deep yo

  • Eric I would like to use this on my internet radio show, is that OK? It is a show for, by and about occupied zones all over America.

  • "that's not a metaphor, it's just really good ice cream." honestly loved that lol

  • I love this so much. Really does influence my own writing

  • This isnt "dumb" your just not smart

  • This..Is..Beautiful.

  • Hey guys. It's poetry, try listening to it.

  • how does this not have over 25 million views?!?!?!?

  • This is amazing

  • This is dumb.

  • "The truth is I think we need those swingsets most on rainy days,

and I think beauty can be a simple as,

two kids crew cut and pig tails handing you a scoop of peanutbutter ice cream,

so good, you'd think it was a dream"

  • Mr. Darby's Scratch and Dent Dreams is always relevant, perfect, and poignant.

  • like. I'm surprised it didn't end "and times were better in the 50's. pce"

  • Hahaha this is so freaking stupid. He has no self-awareness and a relies on really, really obnoxious Americana-reactionary imagery.

  • @junkienurseable how is this stupid, it desribes everything thats going on right now in the world and how we should change wat mistakes webe made

  • this is just free style rapping that isn't free style

  • @moderndayknight54

"free style" doesn't mean they rap without lyrics in front of them or come up with it off the top of their head. that's a common misconception. Freestyle is when something is written but it doesn't have a rhyme scheme, it doesn't follow an order. hence "free" and "style"

  • @chcskater610 isn't that free verse?

  • @chriswillclark

could be, but replace the word "style" with "verse" in the response I gave you. does it make sense?

  • this is just free style rapping that isn't free style

  • Wow. Made me cry. That's saying something.

  • Check Watsky

  • is he improvising?

  • This inspires the shit out of me. That's the only way I can put it.

  • Wow! Very Powerful. Awesome.

  • the thing I love about non-rhyme poetry is that it's unpredictable.

  • @ThaGearOfWar hey, this isn't freeform. Listen closer. He rhymes every word that really matters. It is difficult to tell at first because he talks quickly and passionately, but his words flow so well that you can tell he's rhyming even if you just listened with your ears and not your brain.

  • @whendoubting thanks for pointing that out dude...

  • A poetry slam. He should have practiced more for the exam. His words smelled like green eggs and ham, rotting at the bottom of a garbage can. At first I had turned and ran, but this can't go on without repramand. His words are weak, the guy's a geek, and probally had a wet dream about a sheep :)

    A E I O U, vowels spoken from the sole of his shoe, won't quit talking...wish I had some glue :)

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Hate ppl screaming in the middle of a set.

  • whats his name??? hes dope

  • @gfsconstant Eric Darby. its in the video discription

  • I saw Ryan Cole's video on youtube "My Suicide" and loved it so much that I bought his album on amazon. I'm just in love with it now. Great poetry.

  • i wish i knew how to write a slam poetry! :(

  • ...Holy crap.

  • God. It's things like this that make the world beautiful. Now, let's all go gets us some peanut butter ice cream.

  • This is my favorite poem.

  • Can anyone tell me what this poem means?

  • It means people put to much thought into life. Everything doesn't have to be about turning a profit or improving yourself financially . Its saying to worry about what matters most in life and just never give up. That is just what I take from it. Everyone has their own view on it. Hope this helped

  • @CursedK

People should chase their own individual dreams even when people tell them they aren't gonna make it, and they should enjoy pursuing their dream even if it may not turn out well in the end.

At least that's what I perceived from the poem.

  • Gotta say, I cried a little at the end.

  • There's no metaphor there, it's just good ice cream.

There's a poetry slam at my school every year, and it pisses me off that the winning poems are never slam poems, they're more like children's stories broken into reflective bits and lined up to make a poem, and read about as such.

  • As a slammer my self, this was amazing, and I totally get it.

  • Aw yeah, Mr. Murphy showed me this!

  • I´m a poetry slammer myself, and he is amazing!

  • What a fantastic performance - a melange of truth and dreams for today and tomorrow, inspirational.

  • Dude, I am a poet, but you ROCK !

  • So much better than Special Poetry Slam.

  • One of the most powerful videos I've seen.

  • I love the audience. To be honest, slam is best live in my opinion.

  • the audience is annoying as fuck.

  • This is perfection. Oh my god

  • Slam poetry is my passion and slam poets my inspiration.

  • Holy shit

  • that was one of the best poems i have heard ! Made me rethink my dreams and hopes

  • lol this is acid, what is this, some like crazy poetry shit non stop talking or someshit while saying poetry

  • Though I enjoy listening to and writing poetry.

    I could probably never pull this off ;_;

  • "Donhonki" "First ever crown court banned uk rap-poet" (2009-2014) #SuperInjunction

  • Is there a special word for when there is something similar to Slam but it also has like music to it. Like a bass and drums, jazzy hip hop, yes no?

  • It tastes so good, you'd think it was a dream!

  • Love love love love favorite favorite favoeite favorite

  • All right, this was way too abstract for me to follow.

  • @narutorox85 then you are probably going to be a trash collector when you grow up...

  • @emberthepoet Don't force me to be an asshole and recite my academic achievements, which are probably above those of a trash collector. Anyway, since when is English a prestigious major? Last I checked it's one of the worst and requires the least credentials. Obviously you yourself have yet to grow up.

  • @narutorox85 dude, it is called sarcasm don't get so butt hurt. Also, being an English major has nothing to do with understanding abstract thought.

  • @emberthepoet "English major has nothing to do with understanding abstract thought."

Nor does any other job, apparently, so how does my not caring for this poem mean I'll be a trash collector. Also, pro tip: sarcasm doesn't work online.

  • This is great... If you don't like this, there must be something wrong with your brain. Real.

  • im not completely sure what he is saying in this, he says something new and beautyful every time I hear it. Whatever he is saying, he is saying it pretty damn good

  • @Frostdrgn2 agreed. it's great

  • u suck

  • A supreme poem that really juggles all its threads well, very complex and pacey, Mighty impressive.

  • Are those tears streaming down my cheeks? and goosebumps on my arms?

  • THIS IS SO ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

People do give up, he's telling it like it is, and I love that! <3 this guy is amazing.

  • i almost cried..no lie (2 bad no1 here knos me, but coming from me thats saying sumtn)

  • I am still on the fence when it comes to Slam...but this is good! The kid is passionate and seems to get it. So many people do this to sound cool....to get a ton of oooh's and ahhh's., but I believe this kid. Truth is the key ingredient in good poetry. ~JSLambert

  • Definitely one of my favorite slam poems ever! if you like it, you should check out the poem "White Like Rice"

  • i shuld use u as an example for my poetry slam for school! ur good!

  • 50 people dont believe in tomorrow...

  • @BlakeMcGinnis7 -- hahahaha-- awesome. very awesome.

  • thats super good, id like to see the written version of it! its hard to keep up because they talk so fast. very beautiful though!!

  • ....this is the first slam poetry i have every heard.....i just had an orgasm.

  • If you guys liked this video.... seriously check out this kid

    Andrew Livsey- A Universal Concept

  • slam poetry gives me chills every time, kind of like when you hear someone sing a really amazing high note

  • @angler23babe me too

  • what exactly is slam poetry? i am trying to understand what is going on... I was expecting him to rhyme, but i know poetry doesn't have to rhyme. i am not dissing this by any means, i just don't understand it. this is the first time i've ever heard of it or heard it.

  • @TheZgraduates Slam peotry isn't about the poem you write, it's in the way you perform. That's all I can say. I've done slam before, but I don't really know what made it slam xD

  • @TheZgraduates "Slam" poetry just means poetry that is performed. Its not the same if you read it written down, the magic of it happens when the person who wrote it speaks it the way its meant to be spoken. Its all about the passion of the person speaking.

  • @auriianna amen

  • @TheZgraduates

All poetry is better performed. But slam poetry has certain rules. It's competitive, unaccompanied by props, costumes, music, and under three minutes. Style doesn't matter (rhymed, versed, blank, etc), but poems tend to go deep or over the top funny really fast because that's the best way to draw audience reaction and scores.

  • This man is my slam poetry hero...

I uploaded a slam poem of mine to youtube inspired by my cousins in the Philippines, and this specific reading of it is dedicated to the people in Japan who have been affected by the Tsunami. I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to check it out. Thanks.

  • I generally dislike most slam poetry, but this wasn't bad.

  • FUCK nike. THIS is where amazing happens.

  • this guy is a fuckin BEAST!!!!

  • this is an amazing poem, and read increadbly well, I just cant figure out the deeper meaning, if there is one.

  • @dhuuhd3 I think it's about taking 'imperfect' things (stuff the idealists couldn't sell) and building something amazing out of them. Working hard.

  • @dhuuhd3 So, he's using metaphors to talk about dreams that people give up on. He then says, to head over to Mama Genuine's and fix dreams, make them possible, make it TODAY> Then, take all you have left, and give it to the youth of today, for them to never give up hope. And he argues against capitalistic idealism, and just for the old attitude towards success and opportunity.

Poetry is an art unlike any other in this poets opinion, it takes some practice to understand what a poet is saying.

  • holy shit! i have allways thurt pems was this sissy bullshit but man! this guy got style!

  • This gave me chills.

  • screw the advertisements, we need more of this on youtube

  • You have to check out: Andrew Livsey - A Universal Concept

  • Awesome yo! Peace.

  • This gave me chills for some reason

  • @R1cku1n0x Same

  • Wonderful! Beautiful! Filled with beauty and wonder!

  • I’m tired of seeing this whole world bet on going big

or giving up. Only handing out glory to newspaper headlines

and story book endings, ‘cause the truth is

I think we need those swing sets most on the rainy days.

    <3

  • The goosebumps kick in at 0:17 and don't give up until the audience screams.

  • oh and the 47 people who disliked this video obviously didn't find that store with scratch and dent dreams.

  • and he won right?

  • beautiful

  • hey, can anymore interpret this video for me... I listen too the words and try to visualize what he says in my head, but, I'm not sure what the whole poem is about, especially the last line :(

  • love it <3

  • it's seriously quite awesome how a guy can slam so well in a white tee and jeans

  • This isn't poetry, in any way. Its just a guy yelling, with no rhyme or reason. Its not even clever.

  • @teddybear192837 not all poetry rhyme

you need to read more before you make ignorant comments

  • @teddybear192837 i agree i think this is one of those things that some people consider 'artsy' but normal people consider it crap

  • @teddybear192837 y do u waste time on something u dont even like

  • @teddybear192837 y do u waste time on something u dont even like

  • @teddybear192837 Are you stupid? Get your head out of your bum and listen to the WORDS, and also Chocolate is right, poetry doesn't have to rhyme. But of course your head is so far up your own ass, your wouldn't know that.

  • @teddybear192837 "Reason" is not a feature of poetry, and not all poetry rhymes.

    Any more stupid comments?

  • @teddybear192837 yO, its called slam poetry. its more clever than you'll ever be! Did you even listen to the words? there amazing! the reason dumb ass is about not giving up on your dreams and having hope! and poetry doesn't have to rhyme!!!!! When the guys says "b/c someone told them they'd fail" some told you that, and you were dumb enough to believe them! Just shut up and stop trying to ruin other ppls dream!

  • This literally gave me chills.

  • check out my rhymes at freestyle and flow dot com. leave a comment, let me know what you think. Peace

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • @TilDeathDoUsBarf Uh did you even listen to what he was saying? Hm..

  • The Graduate?

  • I said this in front of my class. Let's just say it went over well.

  • No wonder he only made it to semi's. This slam sucked.

  • preach my brotha preach!

  • I have never really been a fan of slam poetry but my girlfriend keeps insisting I watch various videos. I have to say, this was simply outstanding.

  • This is bad poetry delivered pretentiously. If this drivel brings you to tears then it must be really nice to live in your little bubble. One could make a hell of a satirical film on the phenomenon of slam poetry and its ridiculous fans. It would certainly make me laugh.

  • @MissedHerBalls That is your opinion friend. And mine is as follows: Fuck you, that was awesome and you're just jealous and missing your balls.

  • @FullMetalBlackass Yeah I am jealous but I still got my own balls, they aint missin.

  • @MissedHerBalls Hey look, an inferiority complex in his natural habitat: the internet.
