The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was the first plane to really experience air compressability in dives...

The air in front of the wings would compress as it neared the sound barier and rendered the controll surfaces nearly useless... Great plane though.

They actualy fixed that, with a little flap on the bottom of the wings allowing them to pull up/ have more control
