It is a complete arrogance to suggest artists of the past (he means famous painters of course) would be doing what he is doing. Don't bet on that. People have made follies since the year dot. They didn't call it art but it was as much art as these follies. People paint because they want to and their art is loaded with concepts unlike your one liners.
I dont question the user's intentions.. that's irrelevant. I ask, what do I gain from this? Thats the only question, I can recieve an honest answer from. I am still trying to answer....
it's hard to appreciate things you can't understand which is obviously difficult for some =/ i think Burden is brilliant. I don't think that his "loud art" is there simply for getting attention. This art is agressive and loud for a reason, and it's powerful in that sense. It deals with agressive subject matter in an extremely difficult and violent time in US history. I think that the level of "loudness" was necessary and appropriate for what he was trying to get across.
The interesting thing about Chris Burden, and really his saving grace, is that he has this really loud body of work (the infamous "shoot" performance) countered by this really intense, quiet stuff. (the submarines, his paper airplane machine). All of these things are examining the human beings' relation the war machine's growing pile of shit. I think his loud stuff is just used to get attention, while his quiet stuff is actually much more powerful. Quiet can be very, very powerful.

This guy is totally full of shit. He is a degenerate artist producing degenerate art. The fact that he compares himself to the artists at the turn of the century is pathetic and delusional. And shooting yourself in the name of art is basically tantamount to the obnoxious TV show JackAss.
It's not that this is or isn't art. I just wish people would make art that is thought provoking to a constructive purpose. His tanks and submarines are cool like that...but the wheel thing and the gun shooting thing, uhhhhhh...
If you don't understand art, that's fine, just leave it alone, or try harder. Don't make purely subjective, childish, and obviously unfounded comments.
