Wilhelm Kempff playing this on YT (the stereo version from the set is slightly less magical) made such an impression that I run to get several Tempests by people I like, including this.
This is great. There's a bit of scrambling in the first movement, which he takes at a whirlwind tempo, but the Adagio is just as graciously sustained as one would ever expect this wonderful pianist to do.
I had never been attracted by the first movement of this sonata until now! All the performances I had heard made too much interruption from the tempo changes. But here Gieseking keeps it flowing and makes it attractive!
I love how you've just set the camera on the record. It really adds something.
