@deathcabformike not really. the lpb-1 is a crude and signal coloring one transistor design which will make your tone darker. If you want to stay true to the original tone, an opamp boost is the ticket.
these pedals are not to be used instead of overdrives or distortions. they boost signal and add a 3db of gain. if you use solid state you will get no effect what so ever appart from more volume. they are to be used predominantly on class a and a/b valve amplifiers and enable a very slight break up, unless already crunched and they give a very mild drive. these pedals are very versatile but you must learn what you are buying they are deffinately not a dirt box.
While playing with clean guitar tones this pedal is very helpful...But if your distortion always "on" and want more volume for solo parts, you can't get enough performance from this pedal in your pedal chain, especially when using amp's drive...You may think that you spent money for nothing... Here is the hint!... connect mxr microamp to your amp's FX send-return with 2 cables, ... You will hear fully powered volume when you press it on...
Hello, I have a doubt. I have a clean boost (from custom audio electronics), and when I want to boost my signal to make a solo, it doesn't work if I have other pedals on, like the Distortion III... It only adds distortion to my sound. It only works if my sound is clean... Does the Micro Amp work like this or I may use it to make solos with Distortion/Overdrive? Thanks.
Try placing it differently in your signal chain i.e before or after your distortion. I think it works properly as a volume boost when placed BEFORE the distortion/fuzz/overdrive.
I used to use one as a lead boost. Worked great. Solid as a tank. Lost it along the way somewhere. Now I use a rackmounted EQ that's footswitchable for lead boost. I use an LPB-1 to punch up the front end of my chain. Same thing for half of what this unit costs and does the same thing.
we'll you should experiment on the sound .. then decide where to put it.. actually i dont have a problem putting it anywhere bec. i use a carl martin octa-switch.. i just turn the dip switch on and use loop to activate it.. more easier and of course! true bypass pedal and no tap dancing for lot of effects!
I use a boost pedal as an 'always-on' pedal in the FX chain to boost the performance and intensity of all the other pedals. I used the MXR micro amp for years for this and it worked really well. I only changed cos I started using a Blackstar amp often without FX and so put a similar Blackstar boost pedal in front to lift the gain. These are really good though.
With this one I'd put it last after every other effect and leave it on all the time so that it's part of the 'unaffected' signal. This really gives everything an overall lift and the pedals work a lot better. Alternatively it can be used only on solos and such like for just that bit of extra volume and punch you need. It's undramatic in effect but can make a crucial difference.
that`s exactly what i do sludgefingers. I made one on a stripboard, and it goes last in my effect chain.I didn`t really know it was this subtle, i thought it was more like the ehx lpb-1. Either way, it`s great, i didn`t even put a switch on it, just left it like you said, always on.
..sorry I should have added these type of boosts work really well with valve (tube) amps but if you use a solid state amp they don't affect the sound in the same way. Try one first.
depends on what your using it for as this is not a distortion pedal but used for boosting the input of an amp.
"With a guitar, this lets you boost your signal for lead work, adjust between two different guitars with unmatched output (i.e., humbucker to single coils), or it can supply a permanent boost in a long effects chain where signal drop off is a problem."
is this any different to the EHX LPB-1?

EHX LPB1 is a better choice.

@deathcabformike
you mean because it's half the price or is it just better anyway?
i have the lpb1 but often think about getting a micro-amp (or a boutique-clone with higher-quality parts)

this video shows no difference between the pedal turned on/off. but its a great pedal, i use it for lead work

Would this be useful to put before my amp so that I can turn my (digital) amp's output down, getting rid of some of the digital sound?
baconbag 6 months ago
@baconbag Nope, if the amp sounds bad then the amp sounds bad, just save up your money and get a new one :)

If you couldnt hear the acoustic sound of you strumming your electric, it would be helpful.

@nmarcelino71 make sure the clean boost pedal is placed right in your signal chain. placement is very important when setting up your pedal board.

These are great pedals. Provides a nice clean volume boost. Built like a tank!

How many dB it's boosting ?

Well, this is the pedal i needed for years and I didn't know that it existed.
That is the most essential pedal.

so u put this in from on your chain? guitar straight to this rather than the micro amp last right before the amp?

Yeah it's a simple and undramatic effect, but when it's taken out the difference is really noticeable.
