  • They should have put this in the show after she gets the letter

  • How did you get this song????

  • I love this song!!! And I am soooo glad that there is a video that does this song with Idina Menzel!!!!!! She is the very top Elphaba!!!! Thanks SOOOOO Much!!!!!!

  • wow...

  • I like this song, but I definitely think that "The Wizard and I" fits both the play and the character of Elphaba better.

  • is that idina menzel @ 0:39?

  • @lolipop2119 yes :)

  • @TheClaireAlexandra that doesnt look like her!!

  • Idina has performed both versions of this song "Making Good" and "The Wizard and I" and was the original Elphaba on Broadway until her accident. She also originated the role in London, playing Elphaba for almost 3 years altogether. Stephanie J. Block was only on Broadway for a year as Elphaba and only performed "The Wizard and I", never "Making Good".

  • @MissElphaba07 When you say "only performed TWAI, never MG", do you mean on stage, or in workshops?

  • @BlazedHearts Idina is the only Elphaba to ever have sung "Making Good" and "The Wizard and I". Stephanie J. Block would have never even known of the song "Making Good". This version was exclusive to the original cast workshop. So Stephanie J. Block (2005-2006 Touring Elphaba) would have never performed "Making Good" in any manner, off stage or on.

  • @MissElphaba07 I'm guessing you were excluding SJB's performance of Making Good at "The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken", and her personal recording of it on the Wiced 5th anniversary soundtrack.

Then yes, Idina would've been the only one.

  • @BlazedHearts Ah... hmm... I guess since I'm not much of a SJB fan I didn't know she did that. I was wrong. I should have done more research. Thanks for the info! :)

  • @MissElphaba07 No worries. Thanks for not being one of those jerks who go crazy when theyre corrected. :)

  • @BlazedHearts Lol! Thanks for not being one of those jerks too. You were very polite and I learned something. :D

  • @MissElphaba07 SJB actually came before Idina in the workshops, they replaced her so big name Idina could open the show.

  • Wow, everyone. This song was written before the musical even opened on Broadway, probably years before, and was the 1st draft of the Wizard and I. It's not a revision of the Wizard and I, nor will it replace the song in the future. It was just a draft during the making of Wicked. I love this song and yeah I wish it could have been included but Stephen Schwartz chose what he wanted in collaboration with the rest of the cast and crew. The end.

    ((Idina is my role model))

  • is it just me or does idina sound sooooooooooo amazing on this recording :) iv heard they got rid of this song because it didnt suit idina's voice but i think this song suits her better than TWAI (except the belting bit in TWAI which she rocks)

  • I guess I just disagree but probably because i never actually got to see idina perform in Wicked but I did see Stephanie who was fantastic. I think there both incredible.

  • Now, after that is done.

I think SJB's newer version is a lot better. Idina sounds like she's screaming here.

  • I like this more than The Wizard and I. Why did they take it out? :(

  • @vanvanvanessaa they dont decide based on what you like.

  • @Eorzean Jee, whats up your ass. Lots of people say they like this better, are you honestly going to imply that they all think decisions are based on their opinions?

    Stop being a jerk.

  • @BlazedHearts i'm not just implying, i speak the truth so suck it. stephen schwartz thought it sucked and so he replaced it because he is the composer, not you. and he won't change it just because some other lowlife think it's better.

  • @Eorzean Idiot child, you're not getting the point.

Nobody is ASKING stephan schwartz to change TWAI to this, people are just stating their opinions and asking why it was taken out.

Theyre not jumping up and down going "OMGCHANGEITTOTHISSONG".

Get off the computer troll, you're clearly too mentally incapable of acting like a normal person.

  • @BlazedHearts and you think insulting me is going to deliver the point? the adjectives you use and the uppercase letters do say so much about you. anyway, my point is clear that you people should just shut up about the why's and just state your liking for this song because unless you become the composer, your comparison of this to TWAI won't really matter. I'm also a wicked fan, and it's not your insults that hurt me, it's the fact that someone like you is also a fan of this wonderful musical

  • @Eorzean The "uppercase letters" are used in place of bold and italics, since youtube obviously doesnt have them.

Whats wrong with people stating/asking why this wasn't in the musical? Why does it have such a massive impact on you that you feel the need to speak out and insult people for asking simply questions?

We don't have to be composers, nor musical directors to have an opinion.

And ouch. I'm so offended. I'm more offended that small-minded people like you enjoy a great musical. Shame.

  • @BlazedHearts you know what? you're right. i rest my case.

  • I like this version so much better than the one on the 5th anniversary bonus cd. The lyrics from that version make Elphaba seem so bitter & angry, especially at her father (she refers to him as an 'old bastard'). Again, I like this so much better, but I also love The Wizard and I...not to mention I absolutely adore Idina as Elphaba. =D

  • @jammingirl90 if you read the book, she refers to her father as "old bastard" also.. Thats just the way she felt about him..

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PUT SUCH A GREAT SONG IN THE GARBAGE

  • D= I wish they included this on the CD! It's so good lol

  • so much better than 'the wizard and I"....personally this is better

  • idina and kristin were the best elphaba and glinda EVER <3 the thumb turns green when you like someones comment. like elphaba <3 like this ;]

  • Think about it, if they had used Making Good, and The Wizard and I in workshops, we'd probably all perfer Making Good.

But I do like the Wizard and I better :)

  • This is beautiful :)

  • in my eyes idina will allways be the best Elphaba ALLWAYS =]

(followed by alexia khardime but thats only because iv seen her lol)

  • @bobbie406 You should really go and see Rachel Tucker. She was the 6th Elphaba I'd seen and she's my favourite by far :)

I didn't actually like Alexia Khadime. I've recently seen her as Eponine as well and I wasn't too sure of her then either.

  • i love this song but i think the wizard and i just turned out to be better =]

  • it sounds like "Meadowlark"

  • I love Idina Menzel!!!

  • love how she sings "makeing great." at the end.

  • such al ovely song!

  • am i only one who really wants to find or buy a copy of that magazine?

  • i think, lyrically, The Wizard and I fits the show more since Madame Morrible just "introduced" her to the idea of meeting the wizard because she showed some of her powers. this song is more like when she had already met the wizard. :)

  • I like Making Good better and I think it makes the musical slightly more faithful to the book but after this video I know exactly why they cut it out. This song is a little awful for Idina , whereas she completely ROCKED the Wizard and I. This song is much better for some of the other Elphabas (Like Stephanie J. Block, who recorded it for the anniversary CD)

  • i think i like the wizard and i and making good equally. i do agree that the wizard and i goes better with idinas voice though. but i love her with this song also

  • one thing i don't get is that these workshops were in 2001 and the show didn't come out until 2003. I mean i know to get everything ready takes time but why should it take two years?

  • they keep re-writing scenes/songs because the writers think of something new and they want to try it out with the cast, and then it doesn't work, and then something else works, and after about two years (or even longer!) they have it ready.

  • I love this songgg.

But I agree with most everyone else;; The Wizard and I is better. I would rather have it in Wicked than this song, if I had to make that choice.

But then, I might fight to have both in... XDD

    ANYWAYS. luvv this song. x33

I luff the line; "New inventions or discoveries, maybe find a cure for some disease."

  • I do perfer The Wizard and I as the I want song for the musical, but it's well sung

  • idina belts so much more any other elphaba

  • It's a good song and it wouldn't have been bad for Wicked but i like The Wizard And I better.

  • SJB sings this song very good but I perfer Idina for it and as for Elphaba. She IS Elphaba!

  • @fiyero11 I agree! Edina IS Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth IS Glinda!!

I cannot wait for the rumored WICKED: The Movie to materialise!

  • @muzafar001 me too! but i heard Reese Witherspoon = Glinda and some singer from Canada = Elphaba :((((((( if they do i'll be upset lol

  • @macbaybay10123 Seriously? Reese Witherspoon?!? I mean, alright, glinda is a little bit legaly blonde kind of way! But I still think it's not he right choice!!

  • SJB owns this song. Hands down. I mean, Idina is great, I just prefer SJB's version of this song MUCH more.

  • Wow. She's good (as in in this song. she never sang it in Wicked on stage.)

  • Yeah, but I do like SJB better for this song. As for the role of Elphaba, I prefer Idina - no contest.

  • Exactly. For this song I perfer Stephanie J Block, but for Elphaba I like Idina

  • is that Michelle Federer at the beginning?

  • this song is definitely better than the Wizard and I...

  • Comment removed

  • wow...I think I like it more than "Wizard and I"

  • i kinda wish they would have kept it, but idk. i love making good AND the wizard and i, but awesome song!

  • i think the song is beautiful, but sometimes the music reminded me of "so much better" from legally blonde. maybe its just me...

  • i can see where you're coming from. "So Much Better" is one of my fave songs from Legally Blonde :)

  • Wow! she sounds soo amazing! i like this one better than SJB's.

  • Wow I've never heard Idina sound this good (even though this isn't a patch on SJB). Maybe it's because I can't hear her usual breathing (except one lol) through the mic? Anyway, better than I expected apart from the last note, yuk!

  • ahaha you can hear her breathing too?! i mean, i love her. her lungs just kill me.

  • She does have bad asthma, so I don't really blame her for having to breathe loud and hard during a power song.

  • I don't think it's asthma. Coming from someone who sings daily, when I'm out of breath and still have to belt as hard as I can, I tend to do an Idina "hHhhhh" kinda breath (if that made any sense. If she had asthma, it would definitely set off by the strain singing like that for months on end puts on vocal chords.

  • This is soo good. Go Idina, shes just brilliant.

  • Idina's voice is more raw, which fits the character better. SJB is too controlled, although she has a great voice.

  • i like Idina soo much better than Stephanie but I like the new arrangement (sung by SJB) better than this one ):

(P.S. I actually do like SJB, just not as Elphaba for some reason)

  • Agreed complete. SJB owns this song, but Idina owns Elphaba.

  • @jjjjjjjjj123123123 Agreed! Have you seen SJB's South Pacific? her Wonderful Guy is one of my favorite versions of that song

  • i like her sooooooo much better than stephanie j. block!!!!!!

  • Ooooh ya, this isn't in her range!

  • excuse me?

  • It wasn't written for her vocal strengths!

  • i actually prefer her version of the song.

  • me 2... lol

  • yeah me 2. Stephenie has a nice voice but Idina is Elphaba. No one can really replace that voice

  • Yeah, no wonder they changed it! haha

  • OMG! this is a rare recording of inina singing this! though i prefer the sjb version it's still cool to hear this!
