Their motivation make sense..if there is no cure and being deserted, only they can do is drink and party to forget. I heard people chose to kill each other rather waiting untill their body get rot to death. makes sense.

These alocholic people with lepropsy turned the community area into drunkyard with kidnapped girls for their comfort. Damien tried to teach them to live with dignity. hope this answer helps
