  • not sure if this would work, but it would beyond interesting to see Matt Berninger from The National and Justin Vernon doing something together!

  • So much passion he puts into the song when he plays. i love it :)

  • TALENT!

  • I bet Emma is really kicking herself now...

  • 3:05 So much passion, beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know if this is the only song he performed on the show?

  • Comment removed

  • Fucking Hell...

  • Birdys cover is so much better

  • @Maisie147 Really? or are you on those days in the month? Just saying

  • Comment removed

  • @Maisie147 A cover is a cover. Would've never existed if not for the original.

  • @Maisie147

    get a life

  • That resonator guitar is the most beautiful thing I've seen in my life

  • Who's Birdy and how can she have more views than this incredible performance?

  • Amazing.

  • It sucks when you type in "skinny love" in the search bar and the one by BIRDY comes up before the original.

  • God, there is a reason why this is the original...so amazing. Pulls at every heart string possible. The Birdy version is beautiful but so much less emotional....god, amazing...

  • band after were pissed they had to try follow that.

  • Fuck Birdy.

  • holy fucking shit.

  • 10 million less views than Birdy's version but 10 million times better

  • @Pixiesforever7 Who the fuck is Birdy?

  • @Pixiesforever7 So true! Such a difference when you actually write the song! More passion less fluff.

  • i was trying to not get too emotional, then i heard him sniffle at 3:35, and i just let it out. god damn this is free therapy.

  • Check out my cover of this song please let me know what u think :)

  • Thumbs up if you listen to music that actually has emotion behind it, bon iver, jacko hooper, ben howard, benjamin francis rather than justin bloody beiber and co.

  • Everytime i watch this video my whole body shivers when he says "Who will fight?" And i always smile, no other song has that effect on me :)

  • lost for words

  • @killsomething2 i have no idea how you can call that a shitty performance, the emotion that he puts into the music is amazing, he makes such a full amazing sound when he is up there with just his voice and his guitar that if he did start crying during during the performance i probably would to...

  • @killsomething2 Really? Emotions are a bad thing? The more emotional a live performance is the better. Sure, if he started crying uncontrollably that might be a bit to much, but it's better than the sterile, emotionless robot performances you apparently like...

  • @killsomething2 hahahah fuck off.

  • @killsomething2 go listen to lil wayne

  • just magic.

  • A modern version of John Martyn .. nothing but pure emotion.

  • @stokes738 As far as guitar skills go, John Martyn was a few lightyears ahead.

  • @xiLegend10x It's not half as good as this.

  • @Conjugal1991 Second that.

  • The man has skills

  • Absolut Fet-bra, Tildis!Vicken röst snubben har! Take Care.

  • We are so close to REAL music...

  • Every time I hear this song, especially this emotional raw performance I cry. It's so sad and heartbreaking the tears just come flowing because listening to this beautiful song I can feel the sorrow in Justin Vernon's soul. You have a beautiful soul Justin and your music will always be magnificent. I can't thank you enough for what you have done.

  • what a performance

  • Its incredibly strange how much I love this song, can't even describe it so so beautiful you'd genuinely swear he was playing it to save his life just pure raw emotion and talent. I feel like an idiot even commenting on something in which my words can't enhance or put real meaning to what it makes me feel, fuck it I suppose I tried haha

  • @stevebruce13 "as if he was playing to save his life" - great comment!

  • I'm just sayin Birdy should watch this version and hear what it was meant to be like.

  • @VreemdeFogel92 I like the Birdy version a lot, it's just as enjoyable...

  • the comments were better when i was listening to this in 2008.

  • I don't see the point in talking about Birdy on a Bon Iver video? It's like all the other video comments mentioning Justin Bieber... Whoops did again, damn you Bieber.

  • the moment he yells "then who the hell was i" gets me every time, such passion in his voice

  • FUCKING COACHELLA

  • I like the song "Perth" by him but apart from that I'm not a fan. I'm interested in knowing why people are thinking this is like the best thing ever created, it's nothing special. Just a guy with an acoustic guitar singing. I do like the Birdy cover though, I prefer her voice.

  • @lukerr87 "just a guy with an acoustic guitar singing." thats a pretty glass-half-empty way of looking at it dont you think

  • @GiltThaStilt I guess it is, I didn't mean to sound negative but I wish people could enjoy music without being emotional or slightly over the top. I respect people might feel that way about this song but keep it to yourself.

  • @lukerr87 then find someone who does anything like this, and i will believe you.

  • @lukerr87 Listen to the words and listen to the raw emotion and passion he expresses.. then you'll understand

  • @FrenchersDan I really admire Bon Ivers lyrics, the song "Perth" is stunning. I think it's the debut that I'm not really interested in, the second album is amazing. I do think it's slightly over hyped though.

  • Love it

  • The 2nd chorus to the outro made me cry. Holy shit he's so amazing.

  • who will love you? who will fight?

  • the fact that the audience at the end dont start fucking screaming in appreciation irritates me

  • Since i've been listening to music i've never come across someone who puts so much passion into their music as this man, this is what real anger is, just beatiful.

  • @iamreligion More hurt than anger it seems.

  • @iamreligion want anger ? go watch/listen to trent reznor ;P

want passion go listen to Joe Satriani :P Amazing nevertheless

  • I don't think there's a 15 year old is this world that can sing this song with the REAL and proper emotion behind it that it deserves

  • @skunkape2 words of more truth have rarely been spoken on youtube

  • @MattMonks123 I disagree, not about this being an amazing song but I think that nothing can be beat the original. It was him who wrote it, so it is him who truly understands the song. For the orginal artist, the words carry so much more meaning, leading to a much more genuine performance. Which is why I love this so much!

  • best part at.........3:05

  • What guitar does he use for this song?

  • 100 views from 2,000,000. Well deserved

  • I hate Birdy.

  • goosebumps

  • I'm going to watch this until it turns 2 million views. Join me.

  • @diciannove1100 it only counts you once

  • okay bearth battle

    lamb of god guys

    iron and wine

bon iver why are bearths so awesome?

  • igiojariuohger!!! esta canción me hace pedazos!

  • His voice and his guitar is beautiful

  • god damnit. this has to be one of the most inspiring, painful, and organic performances i've ever heard.

  • 3:22 Kinda sounds like a Freudian slip. The lyrics were supposed to be "who will love you" but it sounded like he said "I still love you". It wasn't intended, but his subconscious let it out. My 2 cents.

  • @MrJufrow he said "who's gonna love you?"

  • @TDubsesbueno Oh really? haha, alright. Thanks

  • I used to sing Skinny Love with passion...but then I took an arrow to the knee...

  • @BrianLeo666 dude..how dare you ruin this beautiful, passionate song with an arrow to the knee joke.

  • @TDubsesbueno lol

  • goosebumps...

  • I would hate to be Emma's current boyfriend.

  • chills

  • got chills from this one

  • anyone know what tuning his guitar is in?

  • @shamwoww C G E G C C

    It's a modified C tuning. enjoy :)

  • @TheSqueakyWaffle ah thanks man. I had it sounding pretty close but it was off. ah much better, i'm stummin it now its sick

  • Thumbs up if you hate the last few seconds at the gas pump, feel like stopping it prematurely, but never do!

  • I love him so much!

  • i think this video must be only at 1 000 000 cuz im pretty sure ive listened to it at least 900 000 times

  • When you're so in love with somebody that they make you feel complete, that you''re one half of a whole. I miss her so much :'(

  • people that go on xfactor etc and say they are 'passionate' need to watch this performance

  • this is the best of his versions yeah? i've checked out the glastonbury and late show ones but keep coming back to this, the atmosphere is amazing, cathedral quiet and you can feel every finger on the guitar. heh it's a totally addictive tune i can't stop singing it and i've never even been dumped

  • He ain't no aazing singer,,, But honestly i think the "secret" of loving this is seeing music as art and not a sport for perfection.

  • Comment removed

  • Sure the performance is not perfect in a technical aspect. But the pure beauty and raw emotion delivers this song unlike and studio version or cover ever could.

  • That girl must apologize for breaking his heart so bad :/

  • @vikolins haha! but remember she must've taken him to great heights for him to fall so far

  • who hurt you Bon Ivor..... who hurt you..

  • *goosebumps*... Genius x

  • im not gay but.. id Bon(e) Iver

  • @KurtKillah That's pretty good :D xxx

  • @KurtKillah I laughed

  • There is little of it in this day and age, but this my fellow youtubers is good music.

  • ): makes me think of my ex so much

  • He's carryin' grief. God bless him, his heart has been hurting.

  • This on repeat forever.

  • See the dislike bar, no? No neither do I

  • Wow. Just, wow.

  • 9,001 likes, 92 dislikes

    over 9000 likes

  • Bon Iver is love! <3

  • I don't think such raw emotion could be captured as well as it is in this song, with Justin singing it.

  • All you twats bagging Birdy Vs. Bon Iver miss the point. The artist is the artist. The song is the song. When one artist sings it- it's one song. One piece of art. When another does, it's another song - another piece of art. They're both good. They're two different songs.

And the whole point is - the material is STRONG. Even if you sucked you'd still sound pretty good playing this song - cause that's how good songs work. This is a beautiful piece of work any way you cut it.

  • @MattMonks123 What your saying is true. But Birdy should've had the better sense to attribute Bon Iver.

  • @MattMonks123 sssht Birdy ssssht

  • 3:28 raw emotion

  • i pre-apoligize to all those that dont agree but i just have to say this is amazing but bird is the word

  • Literally amazing

  • He has a testy pop at 2.06 guys

  • Amazing..!:)

He has something in his voice that make's it unique ..!

  • One word... Wow!

  • The raw beauty of Bon Iver's songs are an emotional stand-off between the heart and the capabilities of the musician, Birdy gets both of em'

  • alright so theres no denying "birdy's" version of this is good. but this! its just sickening someone would think it would be a good idea to even attempt to top this song sung by Bon Iver.

  • 1,951,000 views was me alone! amazing!

  • I haven't felt a tingle going down my spine like the one I got a 3:05 since the end of new dawn fades by joy division

  • That's a hell lot of feeling

  • @Mrpiggyinthemiddle I think it's safe to say that, solely from this comment, there exists zero chance that I'd like you as a person. Also, all of your comments seem to be negative. You're not forced to watch the videos you watch, man. There's a search bar at the top - so for you maybe you should search for super abrasive guttural garbage instead of good music ;)

  • I swear to god I did no shave november and still haven't shaved just to look like Justin....

  • This man makes me proud to be going bald

  • someone hurt this man hard

  • @andyaitchison1 it's about his girlfriend or wife who died....that why the album is called 'for emma forever'

  • @nicholsonpr That is so ridiculously wrong. He wrote this song/For Emma album after he broke up with his girlfriend & a previous band. He moved back WI and the album was born in his dad's hunting shack.

  • @Sauve20 i apologize...I was horrifically misinformed by a mate

  • @andyaitchison1 mate his girlfriend died

  • @Harryluckett Nope. They broke up.

  • Man there was passion in every lyric man I love Justin Vernon

  • Was I the only one to cry? Oh my heart...

  • He makes the most amazing music and has such a beautiful voice. I can listen to his music over and over and still never get sick of it..

  • 3:04...

  • Amazing performence! Check out my acoustic cover!

  • I know nobody will be able to play this song as well as he does, but if you have a minute check out my cover :) thanks!!

  • Pure music.

  • RESPECT.

  • I wonder if this audience knew that they were witnessing one of the greatest live performances ever.

  • @zacman182 I would have ejaculated, shit myself explosively, sneezed, burped and coughed at the same time if I had seen this live.

  • @timfwater If you were so respectably well versed in indie music you would not have only just heard of Bon Iver and the fact you think that about yourself is embarrassing.

  • @Samshaka08 the fact that you replied to a well considered comment by mentioning a casual misnomer is embarrassing, of course vernon is singing the blues and conveying every emotion, i love it and keep coming back to it but i don't think it does anyone any favours to make such a heartfelt composition a competition. adolescents feel love too even if they don't understand it, she has her audience he has his, just let it be ;)

  • @Campestral I wouldn't say it was well considered, the fact he felt his point was so valid was the fact he had a certain 'expertise' in indie music, which has nothing to do with anything. I could find 100's of teenage girls that could copy a good song and sing it well. But I dare you to find someone who could WRITE and convey as much emotion as Justin Vernon does. ;) ;) ;) ;)

  • @Samshaka08 i fully agree with this statement, you sir or madam, have my respect ;)

  • @Samshaka08 pour a little salt we were never here

  • Comment removed

  • 2:31 Jack White approves)))

  • I consider myself respectably well versed in indie music- but had never listened to Iver up until recently- and shortly after- I naturally listened to Birdy. Honestly- I would rather listen to her version more often- because her voice has such a presence and really transfixes me in a different way then this does. However, Iver is undoubtedly more passionate- and represents a pure authenticity that is so lacking in so much music. Therefore- I would rather listen to Birdy- but Iver gets the 'Emmy'

  • @timfwater Don't type.. please

  • @BrettHowe2 I would say the same to you... Only I'd replace 'type' with 'breathe'

  • @timfwater If you were well versed in indie music, which obviously you are not, you'd wouldn't refer to Justin Vernon as "Iver." The band Justin Vernon leads is Bon Iver. That isn't his name well versed indie listener. Birdy sucks. His passion is what makes this song what it is.

  • @timfwater Dude nobody cares ? Just listen to this great song

  • i can't believe i missed their concert. why.

  • I've properly watch

  • I just love it when artists loose themselves in their music, the passion and emotion you see, hear and feel is awesome and makes the hair on the back of your neck rise.

Music is majestically magic, get more in your life:)
