To all of those who think that some other person/group sings this song better than Bob Shane, I say "it ain't so" This is a Kingston Trio song original, and the master version. I read that even Frank Sinatra refrained from recording it because he considered it "already sung."
I've been sober for over eleven years now. But when I was on one of my many benders, this was song that kept me feeding the jute box. Great song. Great Group!
I was in LA and in this very nice Cocktail Lounge and this guy sitting next to me requested this song (Scotch & Soda) from the Lounges Piano Player. Wow! sounded just like this song, it was so good that he got a standing oviation and he played it again. The kicker was it was the first time he sang it, he said he heard the song on a LA radio Station and always sang along with the words on the radio, but never attempted to sing it live until that day. We were Lucky!
I'm 19 years old, and I love this song. It's actual music as compared to all this computer generated nonsense that takes no understanding of music to produce.
@qwpu A lot of people our age listen to real music actually, I think with all the access we get from the internet nowadays it's easier for people to learn about music from the past.
@TheRockinRelic Not to nit-pick, but the song wasn't released until the spring of 1962. But regardless of the year, I agree with your "timeless" comment.
Out of curiosity, does anyone remember this on the jukebox in Brady Commons at U. Missouri? It was on the box at least through 1976, by far the oldest tune on the machine. When I visited again in the mid-80s, it was gone. Tragic!
totally agree, reminds me of my husband when we had just met back in those wonderful sixties, use to play on the jukebox that was at the table at the bar he worked at as a bartender called Cristyle Pistol in San Antonio, I would go in and he would take me to a table and he would give me a bunch of change and I played it over and over, was married 36 years until he passed away of prostate cancer, just makes me cry hearing this song.
Can't agree with you more...this was my favourite Kingston Trio song (and it's not easy having a favourite, is it?) from the time I first heard it...before high school. lol! What a great song and what a perfect delivery! Bob Shane's the best.
@expenguin67KingstonTrio are not for adults only,Nirvana ,with the teenage angst and depression is for kids only, adults listen to Nirvana for about 3 songs and theyve had enuff ...If you look at folk music KingstonTrio were hugely successful with kids during their touring days. Now I luv Nirvana, great songwriter Cobain but ,I will listen to a Nirvana album about once evry 2 months ,Kingston Trio you can listen to evryday `cos the music is about 'evryday' life(an luv).Encino is so b itchin` .Theyv
LOL!!! Those were the days, eh? I have some vague memories of the '60s and college, but they're mostly about the parties - and every now and then, I recall something I learned.
I must have learned something along the way. I'm still alive and not homeless - yet!
The original KT was so good due to Dave Guard's genius. He arranged this song, Bob Shane on vocals and Nick Shane on bass. Wow. I believe this first came out on either the "KT At Large" or the album just titled KT.
Do you recall the Kingston Trio doing "The First Time Ever," or was that another folk group. I swear to god that I heard it first as a folk song, long before Roberta Flack's version.
And, yes, I was madly in love with all of them....
The Kingston Trio has a much-revamped lineup nowadays, but they still put on a good show, and this is one of the best songs on their current performances.
This and Manhattan Transfer (for the female voice) - superior!!
