where's the scream "WHY?" it's what makes this song unique and sought for... tsk.. so rare vocal technique just ted neely and deep purple can.. tsk... ;))
I'm only 30, but I still much prefer this number sung the way it was originally meant to be performed... That is, performed by a true rocker. Does anyone know the history of Jesus Christ Superstar? It was so "outrageous that no producer would touch it so they (Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice) made a record instead (Sarah Brightman's words)." In amateur productions, I never expect them to do this, but I still want it at professional productions! I miss it!
Színészi alakítás? Rosszul olvasok?
I like Colm Wilkinson and Steve Balsamo, not just for their outstanding voices, but for their acting and the physicality they bring to the role. Watch Colm's legs and how he braces himself for the high notes. Like to hear emotions behind this song: it is a show stopper.
He has a nice voice, but misses on the acting. He is too in front of himself, playing to the audience and the song, using his hands so much for expression. I dont even get a hint of quiet demeanor or pain. I still think Ted Neeley is great the way he portrays this part, id check that out if you get chance.
Balsamo is the best for this. Ted Neeley is classic not doubt. However, for overall perfomance and the voice delivery of the emotion with perfect singing skills for musical stage song, one finds it hard not to agree that Steve Balsamo has it all! Check out Youtube for "Steve Balsamo - Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar - Ahoy, Holland - June 2004".
@jd2011music sorry but then you didnt hear the 64 year old ted neeley who just hits the notes STILL which steve balsamo should be jealous of when he turns 64!!
Good impassioned version, but this has been done better by many others especially the original by Ian Gillan. The orchestra and backing musicians sound like they are performing at a 1920's Greek wedding!
he tries so much.. tries to sing it out for proving the feeling.. nothing. sorry. ted neeley says a word in this song and i faint... this is not worth comparing. not a bit.not a bit.
Enjoyed this - thanks for posting! I like the fact that it's one of the "cleaner" renditions I've heard (i.e. no screeching and very little deviation from the rhythm).
@Mutch820 no one can be like Ted.....they are all good singer, but they miss the most important component to play Jesus Christ: THE SOUL. Ted had a richest voice cause he could sing out his soul and have may colours in his timbric...he's a natural born singer and his virtuosisms come out by nature, and are the consequences of singing not the starting point.
I feel so lucky that I went to see this. =) I've always thought Zoltan's voice was amazing; thanks for putting the video up, I didn't think I'd get to see/hear this performance again.
First of all, I know Zoltan, but am in no way biased when I say he has an excellent voice, can sing really well & can hold a note better than most people we hear in the pop world today.
He is also a very accomplished guitar player.
Zoltan has more talent in his little finger than you or I will ever have.
p.s. Did i forget to say how good looking he is too!
and has a beautiful wife!...god I hate him :p
As Robert Palmer once sang...some guys have all the luck!
I thank you for your honest views and you're all probably right. I didn't post this video and I'm amazed it's here at all. I reckon Alan posted it (Judas ) as he lives in the US now. I felt that someone who was so angry with his father would be very adrenalised, hence the breathing. It wasn't so much a contrivance as a way of feeling 'in character'. The camcorder exaggerates it a bit though. As my only attempt at am dram, I had a great time. Everyone in that show deserves an accolade. Z
Gives me goosebumps every time...

Not bad, but not great. The audio quality may have something to do with that, but still, I doubt that it made too much difference. Good voice though.

this is good for an amateur performance : )
but the combination of acting and singing doesn't seem to do him much good.
But I'm surprised people are comparing him to proffesional long term famous singers, that's not really fair.
