If any singer could have equaled Leontyne Price in this music (albeit in a different way), it's Caballe. But her phrasing alternates between gorgeous poise (last phrase for example) and a kind of rushed indifference--as in the climactic phrase. She takes it on one breath, but that only works if the whole thing works--and it doesn't. She's short on the C. C. only cares about the effects she makes, not about the whole aria as a musical statement. That points to Price's integrity.
@moghedien13 That's what Callas said about her hissing enemies... : What about you ? about Monserrat ? by the way enemies & heroes are VERY COMMON & EXTREMELY POLARIZED at the same time , STEREOTYPES . Dependable of // who YOU , prefer ... ? //
too, as well as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century.
I always think it is a good idea to listen
to a number of performances (easily found on youtube) of the same singer, once a singer captures you. You'll discover treasures that will enthrall you.
Thanks tuadolce...but look around..so many envy: any vocalist that does'nt matches with my imagination of PERFECTION & TASTE ... I'm just passing on,some "critics"... found CABALLE ...! "'anti musical"...?! reasonable human cheap envy!

Everybody is blaming the conductor and it is in fact, Caballe who´s rushing the tempo. When she does that, trying to sing long lines without sense, repeating the same phrases without a natural pause... I hate it... it is ANTIMUSICAL. And it isn´t that I don´t like her. It´s just that everything becomes mediocre.
don't blame montserrat caballé. she's able to sing any line at any dynamics.
the conductor doesn't know what he wants. he rushes like a madman when the second part comes...and he's not listening to her... or the whole orchestra is not listening to him...has happend before... hearing the souffleuse i would say that they didn't have enough rehearsal time.
the oboist should have become a car mechanic instead of fucking up the whole aria.

omg another butchering by Caballe. Does she read totally different versions of the score or something? Except for the high C this is all wrong. The opening O Patria Mia phrase has a jacked up tempo. Zero synergy between her and the oboe. Zero synergy between her and the orchestra as well. Who's at fault? Not sure, but this seems to happen alot with Caballe.
I love Caballe but the only thing that I agree here is, that she was a FABULOUS SINGER WITH BEAUTIFUL VOICE. But her rendition of this aria was very poor in style and execution. Many phrases too long and rushed so she could sing them and without sense when repeting the same phrase. Definitely Leontyne and after her, Aprile Millo are the best in this aria.
Beautiful tone, secure technique, and true artistry, all typical of Caballe's best singing, are prominent in this performance. Comparable to L. Price's great performance of this aria.
Not quite but certainly a memorable high C as is the rest of the aria, that one note seems to be more famous than the entire opera. Incredible sound and Caballe is in good voice.
Absolutely sensational!!!!

It's the dumpy recording that's making her sound just under the pitch on the C, right?

This is TOTAL BEAUTY OF SOUND and interpretation. Monserrat gives me the chills.
I had to listen to this over and over again until I could "move on" to something else.
What amazing technique and voice timbre. What's more she is a beautiful human
being inside and out, body and soul.

you have not heard Zinka Milanov's 1955 recording of this aria. I have both I prefer by far Milanov to Price.

That oboe solo is killing me... no sense of musicality! It sounds like a dying duck!
Caballe on the other hand, magical as always.

Exceptionally beautiful. And finally the high C, in an Aida. (apart from Price and her, no one could sing this special C)
