P38s are good off road we used ours off road but then bought an l322 and I think the l322 is a better off road car and is more comfortable and reliable
@DanUK1984 in the first few seconds of this clip, yours looks exceptionally high. I think that may be due to my dad having 20' Land Rover wheels though...
but a bigger wheel, gives you less tire, less traction, large wide tires on big rims are just good for looks and a sports car on dry roads. Put some Hummer size wheels and tires and you can get that water clearance over the ten inches, near 20 inches, but on the highway, you made need to replace a few disc (in your back). No video shows water reaching over the grill, many are on Range Rover Courses that are set up for the specs of ascent, descent, rock and water clearance. Fun to watch!
I had a 2004 Vouge and i missed it so much about a year after selling it that i went and bought a 2001 D HSE... It drives and rides better than the 2004!! It filled that range rover hole in my life hahaha....sick video mate!
The P38 is a superb old car. It gets a lot of bad press from those that mourn the loss of the Classic but it's not deserved. My P38 with just some reasonable tyres has scrabbled up and down hills that have seen a Defender try and fail on and two fully modded Discos decide not to try. I'm no off road genius. It's the car with a modicum of know how.
Follow someone in a Defender round a course and I guarantee you they will be working up a sweat whilst you simply cruise along behind them.
No, it was well under the wading limit. The door seals are excellent on the P38, much better than the classic I had, and tbh better than the L322 than I have now.
@DanUK1984 mate I have to agree on the wading limit, I had to push my P38 through a deeper river crossing than this and with the water over the bonnet splashing against the windshield, it did it like it had a snorkel! Funny thing was a defender with a snorkel had an issue.. go figure
Good vid I personally love Range Rovers even though im a jeep guy.
I have to say im pretty sure my Grand Cherokee could do any of that.
But great video my cousin has the exact same vehicle and it is def an amazing vehicle, wish I could take my jeep to some of those places you went through.
@DanUK1984 Hahahaha, well said :) These idiots will complain if the music is anything but Dizzy Rascal or Eminem. Nice Rangie, Excellent video mate :)
They are only as reliable as the people that own and maintain them.
I never had a day's problem with it. I have a new shape now, being high mileage it's had a few problems, but most caused by poor maintenance by previous owners. The P38 is a "Better" car than the L322, but the new one looks so good.
I think you missed the point. Perhaps it should have had some black music to go with it? What do the drug dealers listen to these days? Oh no that's rigt, this is a propper Range Rover.
if the exhaust pipe is under water but the car is still on water won't go in. however if the water is actually up to the engine or up to the exhaust and the car is off then you can get water in the engine
@javaleira since exhaust is a constant flow, water doesn't go in. Like let's say you got a cup of water and a straw and you put the straw in the water and blew air into the straw, water doesn't come up through the straw does it? No so that answers your question BUT water can get into the engine if water gets to the intake.
Hey at 2:00 your horn goes off when you hit a bump - my '99 HSE does the same, did you find out what was wrong with it or did you not bother? I'd be pleased to know how you fixed it if you did!
@Padi12345 You will find that the springs behind the horn cover on your orienteering wheel have gone slightly soft. Unless of course the ground pin is loose and grounding itself when there are bumps.
yeah i have a question im 17 and im about to buy this 1996 range rover hse for 2559 with 12100 miles on it with no body damge and it runs great. im wondering if this is a good buy or not? let me know

Nice vid, quite the sound track. I've driven my 1978 Oldsmoble Delta 88 Royale :) through water about that deep, carpet got a little wet tho(rusty floor, lol). Also went through trails just slightly tamer than that, but dry. Wouldn't make it through slick mud like that. However, those cars has good sized tires stock, had to because the car weighed around 5,000 lbs, lol. The old guys always told me the only difference between 4x2 & 4x4, was the distance of the walk home. ;)
to get technical, the first land rover was a " rover " center steer. land rover is the OFFICIAL name, check sollihul. theyll tell you. and to get super technical, tata motors india now owns land rover/jaguar, so to clear things up, land rover is still the official company name. not range rover, not rover, LAND ROVER. facts, there amazing. btw im a land rover tech. n e questions please feel free to message me.
this make me never want to take a range rover off road. you had trouble with a puddle and some speed bump sized dirt mounds, then scaled a gentle slope and bottomed out on a pothole! CRAZY MAN!!!
Your a clown. You see Land Rover written on the front of all Land Rovers. That Means they are "Land Rover" Wether there Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander or Defender. 90% of the population when they hear Land Rover think Discovery. Thats because most people have a bit of forward thought and common sence..
I bought a Range Rover 97 a month ago and did not even know how to use the cleaner front headlights, someone can help me and tell me which button is it? thanks
dude it comes on with the main windscreen wash,as you wash the main screen the front ones copy, but sometimes the pipe comes loose (a common fault) the way to get round it is use a cable tie
we had one like that before but it had used up 5 v8 engine blocks and traction control, cruisecontrol, airco, abs and a lot of other stuff didnt work after 2 years
How big fuel consumption does this car have for 100km? I'm looking for a bigger car, well kinda like this one, but not a new one you know, maybe some advices?
Are these reliable, I was considering buying a '98 hse 4.6, but I'm not looking for something that's going to be in the shop all the time, my other choice is a 2001 Denali.
No. they are the best vehicle I've ever driven, but they are not toyotas. They have many "little" anoying problems, including air suspension and electronics as the most popular. If u are not mechanically inclined, I advise not to buy one. If you want reliability buy a toyota, or a honda, they might not be a pleasure and a beauty to drive like range rover, but they don't take other care than put gas and change oil, literally.
if you looking for a fullsize the 2007 and up ford expedition isn't a bad choise its got toyota like relibliite and a ford like price, truck like towing and car like a ride though they do guzzle alot of gas
i would have to differ on the best rover coment,my 95'county lwb is the last of the "round eye ROVERS''and with the locking diff out back, i too have never been let down. I go to work on the freeway @80mph and not even a bit of vibration at the wheel with 33 wrangler's and an ome 4" lift. i love all rover's but we know we would trade for an ole series or a 130 defender any day! i'm quite surprised no "jeep" comment''s all that brake work and no ss line's?? a bit of vibration
Well the actual range rover is the best car money can buy its very comfortable its 1 of the best offroad and its british. If your looking for a good 90's rr I would reccomend the 2.5dt ofcourse your not going to go fast but to be honest we dont need to go fast at most of the times in this world the V8 is simply too thirsty also in the 1998-2001 that car had GPS. thanks.
ive had a 2003 4.4 petrol and then after n 2005had a range rover sport 4.2 supercharged and now i have the tdv8 3.6 even know it is a lot slower than the range rover sport and the 4.4 there isnt a lot in it but this one is a much better car and fuel economi is so great on this one but unfortunatly the new convertible jag has caught my eye so my baby has to go.
I have just sold my 2006 land rover disco TDV6 which wasnt anywhere near as good as my old 2000 P38 4.6HSE range Rover which is far better off road. I wont ever sell my P38 its superb. one tip dont drive backwards in deep water as this can seriously bugger up the baffles in your exhaust and cats...drive forward and keep behind your bow wave.I have to do alot of off roading as part of my job across fields and green lanes. P38 has never let me down from new.
Just wondered how old are you? You look young! Some friendly advice...dont brake on slippery downhill slopes, let the engine do the breaking for you as its more controlable even if you have ABS fitted.
on closer inspection i was wrong..im looking at a model like this although the roof goes up a little bit toward the back..and help would still be appreciated
forget the turbo diesel too slow, go for the 4.6HSE its awesome, if you dont mind the petrol I average about 17-19mpg on day to day, just city driving stop start stuff about 13mpg, but generally 17mpg from my 2000 P38 4.6HSE. I have uprated my brakes to grooved and drilled and carbon composite brakes and it stops fantstic. you can get some reliable chips for Turbo diesel boosts power significantly and improves mpg. most TD have amuch lower spec so go for all the toys.
Thank you very much for not posting a video with blarring pyseudo-emo or generic rap music that I have to quickly turn the volume down on to save my hearing. Thanks for having some degree of class.
Did you do serious stuff? No, so indeed MTs werent necessary... but on the other hand, consider ATs... All Terrain - which are a blend between MTs and Road tires... or consider having two sets of wheels... and doing mud mud mud :) I'm sure you'll love it... RRs are pretty darn capable ;)
The music sounds like something out of Monty Python. I can just hear Clease's voice over - "and now will shall take the Range Rover to pick up a very large shrubbery!"
I've not had any problems not to be expected with a 10 year old car to be honest. Obviously at that age things will start to fail, but the trick is to catch things in time before they are a supprise!
I've had two land rover discovery's and although my latest one's front diff blew apart on me at 105 MPH I still consider it one of the best cars I've ever owned. I've also owned a Vauxhall Frontera Sport Trans-Globe edition, nice ride, but otherwise didn't feel like it was half as strong body wise to take off road
P38s are good off road we used ours off road but then bought an l322 and I think the l322 is a better off road car and is more comfortable and reliable

@DanUK1984 It was me that said my dad had 20's on his, not LIP 15... And yes, you are right regarding the Larger rim, smaller tire, less comfort etc.
Lee1188 11 months ago
@Lee1188 Also the larger rims mean less sidewall, and sometimes you need some sidewall flex.

@Lee1188 No - its in off road mode.
Wheel size has no effect on overall wheel+tyre diameter as a bigger wheel has a thinner tyre...
DanUK1984 1 year ago
@DanUK1984 Yeah I realise that, I just wasn't sure if the wheel size would have altered the way it handles off road..

dennis99844151 4 years ago
I have just sold my 2006 land rover disco TDV6 which wasnt anywhere near as good as my old 2000 P38 4.6HSE range Rover which is far better off road. I wont ever sell my P38 its superb. one tip dont drive backwards in deep water as this can seriously bugger up the baffles in your exhaust and cats...drive forward and keep behind your bow wave.I have to do alot of off roading as part of my job across fields and green lanes. P38 has never let me down from new.

Awesome range rover, I have a 1999 Vogue SE model. Looks like you mangled your side steps a bit though! = \

Just wondered how old are you? You look young! Some friendly advice...dont brake on slippery downhill slopes, let the engine do the breaking for you as its more controlable even if you have ABS fitted.

That was in Low Range 1st, but regardless of what gear ur in, hdc or whether u have ur foot on the brake that hill was too steep....
But yes I do know how to use engine braking :)

forget the turbo diesel too slow, go for the 4.6HSE its awesome, if you dont mind the petrol I average about 17-19mpg on day to day, just city driving stop start stuff about 13mpg, but generally 17mpg from my 2000 P38 4.6HSE. I have uprated my brakes to grooved and drilled and carbon composite brakes and it stops fantstic. you can get some reliable chips for Turbo diesel boosts power significantly and improves mpg. most TD have amuch lower spec so go for all the toys.

Dear Video Poster,
Thank you very much for not posting a video with blarring pyseudo-emo or generic rap music that I have to quickly turn the volume down on to save my hearing. Thanks for having some degree of class.

nice RR... but if you're really into offroading... consider gettin some proper tires...
vstef1 4 years ago
Thanks for the tip! Not like I've never been off roading before lol!
Ever done over 100 mph on mud tires? You wouldn't want to, and neither do I.
Did I get stuck? No, so I don't need mud's
DanUK1984 4 years ago
Your welcome!
Nope, wouldn't want to!

I am pretty sure the three tunes are
633 Squadron
Carmina Burana
Air on a G String
Then at the end it's the first one again.

I've not had any problems not to be expected with a 10 year old car to be honest. Obviously at that age things will start to fail, but the trick is to catch things in time before they are a supprise!
DanUK1984 4 years ago
oooh...of course! I've heard lots about the infamous failing parts, but this video really gives me hope that Land Rovers can be reliable!

I've had two land rover discovery's and although my latest one's front diff blew apart on me at 105 MPH I still consider it one of the best cars I've ever owned. I've also owned a Vauxhall Frontera Sport Trans-Globe edition, nice ride, but otherwise didn't feel like it was half as strong body wise to take off road

wow! man that was very nice! amazing job.. great car and music!

With some decent tyres, you'd have done a lot better in the mud. I had a 2000 4.6 HSE- loved it but the darn thing broke down every week!

I started with Michelin Alpin's and they were really good, then I bought some Wranglers and they suck so bad.
Getting Alpin's again soon.
I wasnt exactly thrashing it, and tbh I enjoy "trying" to get stuck. It rarely happens, just needs more throttle generally and out she pops!
