Investing in owned media as a means of authentic story telling and communication is a fantastic alternative to display advertising for brands that are capable of being a meaningful part of their customers' lives. Display advertising in the attention-based economy is noise at best, but much more like theft. As consumers learn to drive ads out of their perception, the ad industry clamours to be more and more invasive via larger ads, video, take-overs etc. These are the tools of irrelevant brands.
