Metroidvania's are one of my most favorite game genres, and at least two 3D Metroidvania titles spring to mind immediately. Those would be "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver" for PS1 and PC and "Prince of Persia 2: The Warrior Within" for various platforms. They're both excellent games and are non-linear adventure games requiring collecting of powerups to unlock parts of previously explored areas to further progress in the game. Both are highly recommended.
Metroidvania? I only use that as a nickname for Castlevania: SotN. I call these types of games "back trackers" or "back tracking games" since it requires you to backtrack.
I think the recent Castlevania's with this style are way better than any Metroid. I don't know why, I think is because the Metroid's have cheap secrets and obstacules, while the recent Castlevania's are better designed.
Finally a solid explanation of what Metroidvania is..
Also IMO Batman Arkham's Asylum deserve's a mention as it borrows heavily from the Metroidvania subgenre. Its not quite Metroidvania but its very close.
there´s also a new game of blaster master subtitled overdrive, i really recommend it, it´s a remake of the original but now it has a map and all the metroidvania things you´d expect
Metroid Other M is already out though so I can see lots of people in the future giving you comments like " Hey , Metroid Other M is already out so your video is wrong".
@Waluigi71 Yeah, I can see it coming. The problem with people who never think things through is when they never bothered to take a look at the date this video was posted compared to Other M's release date. I seen it before & I'm bound to see more of it on this video.
OK, I have to disagree when you say Metroid was better than Donkey Kong Country. I loved the DK series, it was fun and an iconic example of the platformer .Donkey Kong Country is the only reason Nintendo even exists now, as without it Nintendo would have lost practically it's entire market share to SEGA. Before Sonic, Nintendo had an 82% market share, this dropped to only 30% after Sonic. DKC kept Nintedo afloat because it was simply that good...
Hey Gexup, Have you played Whiplash? It's a platform game by Crystal Dynamics and is a spinoff of Mad Dash Racing. Unlike most platformers of it's time, like Jak 2 which was an open sandbox platforfmer, it went the metroidvania route. It has all of the elements of a metroidvania game (i.e. the map system and powerups). It's basically Metroid meets Banjo-Kazooie. If you haven't played it yet try it out. You might like it ;).
Yeah, Whiplash was a very good game. I would recommend it, although it does have it's faults, it's humour is somewhat Tim Burton like I found and if you're a Metroid fan I think you'll like the influences.
Definately. The Mega Man games should count as Metroidvania, although that said I've never heard of that name before, I just called them "Non-Linear Adventure Platformers", and personally I would have said Mega Man was better than the Metroid and Castlevania games (I prefer the Linear Castlevania titles).
Actually, Mega Man is a point-A-to-Boss type of game. The power-ups were about using them to destroy enemies, not use them as keys or get to places you can't reach though with the current abilities because I played some Magaman Bosses w/out a power-up. Other Games like Banjo-Kazooie has power-ups but we don't call them Metroidvania do we? Remember the subgenre doesn't have levels; one whole Non-Linear world.
HOWEVER, there is a Megaman game that's a "Metroidvania" & it's the Mega Man ZX series.
If you go back to previous levels in Mega Man games with new powers and after certain bosses are beaten you can access new areas. Often it would require you to go back twice to find all the hidden stuff on each level. It fits perfectly, the fact that it had "levels" doesn't change the fact that the gameplay is near identical. You can play it as a point-A-B game if you want, but you're missing half of the game that way,
I've never been a fan of the Metroidvania genre and out of the three Metroid Prime games I'll readily admit 3 is my favorite because it had the least amount of back-tracking. Still, I'm looking forward to Other M but mainly because I really want to see a Metroid game with a good storyline (MP3 came close but didn't fully deliver on that department).
Name of genre is creepy. Only Metroidvania I played was Brave Dwarves 2. You get seven keys, get to huge gate and kill the boss. Gosh, I need to buy Shadow Complex. But best XBLA game is debatable.
A great episode of video genre gexup. Ive never heard of half the games you mentioned out side the two genre deffining series. Looking back over some of the games in this genre I kind of prefer the castlevania games with the lite RPG macanics. Anyway this video has realy made me excited for Metroid other M to be released.
WOW! This was a great episode of Video Game Genres! I never knew that Metroid made a genre and made so much influence with games today! You get a BIG thumb up from me! I can't wait for Metroid: Other M, as well!
@iminthenet2 Viacom mistaken that this was not any of their owned rights. I just addressed to YouTube that this was a misunderstanding and they put it in public, so that's half the battle and I'm glad that you're able to watch this video =)

I think Metroidvania is a redundant name, it should be just "Metroid Style" or something, Castlevania didnt add anything Metroid created the style.

Have you tried Ufouria for the NES? It was just re-released on VC, and it's another Metroidvania from Sunsoft. Not very difficult, but enjoyable.
