He was still involved in the team strategy. At the time Paterno became aware of the scandal, he probably didn't believe the sexual nature of the allegations at all because it was extremely shocking. Until I saw all the independent accusations made, the evidence against Sandusky, and the bizarre interview with Bob Costas, I didn't believe the allegations.

Did Paterno do wrong in the situation? Yes. However, it isn't fair to blame him that for it. Blame Sandusky.

Paterno didn't know Sandusky committed child rape. He just knew that Sandusky had been accused of rape. He probably thought the allegations were false. It's not uncommon for false allegations of child rape to be made. Until there were lots of independent allegations, there wasn't much evidence. He's not a police officer or an investigator; he didn't know how to handle these accusations.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I knew what Paterno was thinking,but I'm making an educated guess because, when I was a kid, my karate teacher went to jail for child rape and good people didn't believe the allegations at first because details were ambiguous, but the evidence later turned out to be overwhelming.
