  • U IDIOTS HE SURVIVED AND NASCARCRASH Y IN THE WORLD DID U CALL IT A FATAL CRASH HES STILL ALIVE IDOIOT

  • isn't that a plymouth superbird nascar?

  • @Fradias11 plymouth Road Runner,close

  • @84Bronco351 why do they call it a rebel 400?

  • @Fradias11 Name of the race

  • Camera people back then sucked.

  • He had this one and the one at daytona that were just horrible and walked away and kept on racing. Dale Eanrhardt hits the wall one time, doesn't flip or anything, and is killed instantly on impact. R.I.P. Dale Earnhardt! I never got to actually watch you race but I hope you know that I sure wish I could have!

  • @spartanxxx17 I did it was awsome,i was 11 it was spring or (fall i forget) of 2000 at talladega the first race i had ever been 2, my dad and i had bush tickets which were for iroc then happy hour followed by the bush race. Sr started last in the iroc bc winner last race starts last, it took him less than one lap to get that trans am into first place he led every lap and won.,sr won that race but we couldnt get cup tickets for that sunday,

  • @MrISatai agreed, he is a man of steel Richard is.

  • DANG!

  • DANG!

  • Sure took them along time to do anything about it, like 3-4 years ,you would think that right after Joes crash would of been done the next week

  • Sure took them along time to do anything about it, like 3-4 years ,you would think that right after Joes crash would of been done the next week

  • i can't understand how did his hands not injure???

  • Tagged the inside wall? More like Slammed.

  • that artist of the song had a weird name :P

  • Yngwie Malmsteen FTW!

  • lol the description says he "tagged" the wall. I think he pretty much knocked it down

  • creepy music

  • This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has his own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!

  • Nascar with some Malmsteen?!? Lol, that's a first

  • i thought that was a superbird at first...i was about to hunt him down a punch him in the head for crashing my dream car...

  • My Gawd he broke the wall!

  • Wow, that's one of the hardest "tags" (more like death blow) to a concrete wall I've ever seen. The king cheated death on that one for sure.

  • ABC had just started live coverage of this race...but they were running a taped clip when Petty wrecked and only caught the VERY tail end of the incident. Ned Jarrett was in the booth with Ji McKay at eh time and Ned assures me that Jim was nearly scared to death.

  • Yep, i got the NASCAR CRONICLE book and before 70 you don't see nets. Compared to today the cars back then were death traps.

  • the kings head hit the pavement and messed up his shoulder, after that they made it manditory to use the petty net

  • LOL, saying he "Tagged" the wall is like comparing a freshely severed arm to a "Mild flesh wound." But seriously, he massacred the damn wall!

  • "In the 1970 Rebel 400,

Richard Petty tags the inside wall

in his Plymouth Roadrunner..." TAGS?? WTF!? that was WAAAAAAAAAY more than "tag" that was more like "destroy"!

  • this is the crash that got the safty nets started infact Petty himself designed it

  • @stormrider62033 Safety nets come out after the death of Joe Weatherly at Riverside in 1964, Richard did design a improved safety net after this.

  • @stormrider62033 Actually...his Mother did.

  • @stormrider62033 Not really. window nets became a big issue after Joe Weatherly got killed at Riverside when his head came out and smacked the wall during a driver side crash.

  • @weaverracing96 Same thing happened to Billy Foster (The first Canadian to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in 1965.) January 20, 1967 at Riverside. left front brake drum exploded and he hit the turn 9 wall.

  • i'm not sure about this but i heard that he lost part of or all of his hand in this crash. is this true or not?

  • It's not true.

  • OMG this car has really NO crumple zone.

  • these cars were built like bricks. there was no such thing as crumple zones back then.

  • this is why the nets are there now, petty left side is hanging outside the car as its flipping

  • amzing that he didnt break his neck withou t the head strap reinforcement how many

gs did he take on the TAG?

  • that was my first race i went to. that was a really bad wreck..

  • Your 15...Yet you were alive to watch this race in 1970.

    Nice try.

  • and yet im not 15? stupid.

  • He "TAGS the inside wall"?!

  • I'd say the weak wall dicipated a lot of the energy in the crash, sort of like what the safer barier does.

  • It's a miracle he survived. He broke the concrete wall for crying out loud.

  • @jws381 Well... Ironically, breaking the concrete wall safe is life.

  • this crash is the reason that NASCAR ordered window netting for all cars. Richard's belts almost failed, and he was partially ejected. Also, a diagonal brace was added to the roll cage - the "Petty Bar" - from above the driver's head diagonally across to the frame rail on the right side, right behind the driver's seat.

  • Its a miracle that petty surived this accident i belive this was his worst crash ever.

  • Also the 1988 Daytona 500 crash. Petty did said that the steering was the cause of his big accident at Darlington.

  • if you look closely you can richard's arm out the window, flapping about and there is also a red rag which he chewed on to get water during the race, he did that all the time he raced.

  • This was before the use of window nets, and Richard's head hit the pavement several times.

  • its amazing that all these legendary drivers lived through this crap. Thats racing with HUGE balls!

  • wat song is this please!!

  • I dont know the name of the song but the guitar player is "Yngwie Malmsteen" from Sweden

  • There done reenacted this using NR2003 lol

  • You can see Petty's head strike the pavement before 40 seconds in. That really sucks. Glad he lived. Legend. (I'm not even a Nascar fan)

  • the song creeped me out

  • me 2

  • The window net would not have helped Joe. Nonetheless, Petty's 1970 crash at Darlington finally mandated the window net.

  • If you pause it at 37 seconds it looks like the front right tire is a extinglisher X)!!!!!

  • Can you try to get it in color and without music??????????

  • footage wasnt in color back then.

  • i was there and saw the accident right in front of me as a 13-year-old.

  • Back when they were call STOCK CARS, not nascars. These drivers took there lives in there hands every time the hoped in those cars.

Look 200 miles an hour is impressive in a nascar, but it had to be downright hair raising in these 4000 pound missles.

  • lol, what do you mean back when they were called stock cars, not nascars??? Nascar stands for national association for stock car auto racing. It has since it was founded in 1948. Only noobs to the sport confuse the acronym to a actual word.

  • What I mean is that there were much less modifications to the cars back then, so they were closer to being "Stock cars", or unmodified cars.

    Thats all im saying.

  • lol

  • dang it all he smashed a Roadrunner!

  • ouch bad crash :( glad he wasn't killed.

  • he didnt tag the the wall he smashed the wall

  • that's amazing that he wasn't killed hitting head on like that... that's why he is the King.

  • this is why we have window nets now.

  • He broke his arm in this crash due to no window nets. If you look closely you can see his arm fly out

  • the music, the old film, and the slo-mo put together make you feel kinda creepy.

  • yea sounds scary...like an old horror film

its like...some killer throw a knife at the tire and the car hits the wall hard...then failed to kill the king

maybe the king is indestructible lol

  • Indestructible. Determination that is uncorruptible. From the other side, a terror to behold. Anihalation will be unavoidable...

what am I the only person who sings that new Disturbed song everytime I hear the word Indestructible? lol

  • hey i like that song :)

    Richard

    Is

    Indestructible

  • ouch

  • Petty broke his neck in that crash, but i don't think he ever missed a race because of it

  • I watched a show where they explained, that because this crash is before window nets, his arm as briken when it went out the window while the car was rolling over.

  • Darlington Raceway is "Too Tough to Tame"

  • his body was made out of steel to survive two bad wrecks

  • he survived a lot more than 2 bad wrecks, but i agree he had tp be made out of steel

  • darrlington speedway is some "Too Tough for Racing" lmao, thats wierd nickname for that one

  • He sure was really lucky to survive that one o.0

  • It's a wonder he didn't lose his arm. THAT is the reason for window nets!!!

  • lol yeah! It almost looks like his arm is hanging out... ouch. I would be freaking out if I was in that car :D

  • his arm was hanging out, this and a fatal wreck at riverside(cant remember the driver) made window nets mandatory

  • Joe Weatherly's fatal crash at Riverside 1964

  • Wow it actualy was? Omg!

  • yep dumdum

  • Joe Weatherly was the driver at riverside he died from hitting his head on a concrete barrier because he didnt have a window net

  • bad crash

  • actuallyto me it looks like his head is hanging out too with his arm.

  • is it just me or is he hanging out of the window?

the music added a creepy effect to the vid

  • Actually yea, his arm was hanging out the window. I believe it was this wreck that made the invention of window nets and the "Petty bar", the bar that runs length wise against the roof of the car to prevent it from caving in.

  • ok thanks

  • no problem, anytime.

  • Oh wait my fault, it was 1964.

You are partially right though because it was mandated in 1971 because of those 2 crashes, Joe Weatherly and this one.

  • Wrong, the invention of Window Nets came in 1960 when Joe Weatherly was killed at Riverside.

  • Ok, my bad. The window net was made mandatory after this race, but they had them before, but it wasnt mandadted. Thats what I got screwed up on.

  • Yea that sounds right.

I remember seeing that Joe Weatherly's fatal crash in 1964 at Riverside brought the invention of the window net, but it wasn't mandated until 1971.

  • Thank elwo0d i Appreciate

  • I love the King!! But how he didn,t lose his arm in this crash is beyond me! Someone was looking out for the King here!!

  • did he got injured

  • Yes, this accident injured Petty's shoulder, and helped Bobby Isaac to win the 1970 Grand National Championship. His head hit the ground too.

  • True... if I remember right, the Pettys had three cars wrecked on this weekend. This one (obviously), one that Pete Hamilton was driving, and a third one (this one or Hamilton's was a backup)...and that's when teams only had two or three cars total. Richard missed a few races, but ended the year with 18 wins...then came back and won the title (and 21 MORE races) in '71...

  • i think his head hit the ground too, not sure though. but this crash and a fatal crash at Riverside are why the window nets were installed

  • I might want to check up on that, but I know one fatal crash at Riverside brought about mandatory seat belt usage in NASCAR in the early 60's, but I thought this was the crash that made window nets and Petty bars mandatory.

  • Seat belt usage was mandatory I think...but Joe Weatherly's Riverside crash made the shoulder harnesses mandatory.

  • Actually, I think it was the window net. His head hit the wall when the car did [from what I have read].

  • You could be right... But from what I've read, Weatherly didn't like to wear a shoulder harness because it made him feel too confined.

In any case the first window nets they had were pretty flimsy ...they looked almost like volleyball nets...

  • The bad thing about it, is that when Petty hit the pit wall, it's right where a plaque was mounted when he beat his dad Lee's most wins record the race at Darlington before this one.

  • Yep, look at his arm...OUT THE WINDOW...the next year the net came into being.

  • This Crash is why Window Nets are still mandintory in NASCAR.

  • Wow

  • 70's 80's, only real mean could drive these bad boys.
