  • Just finished ,works great, great video , now if there was a way to keep the dirt out that would be something.

  • @Jas4u2 yes, just wash ur hands more often :)

  • Why oh WHY can't Apple make a bloody mouse that has the scrolling features of the Magic Mouse but the squeeze things on the side the Mighty Mouse had? Plus one that still has a cord to save money on batteries?!

I like the scrolling features of the new mouse and that there's no parts that can get dirty/dusty, but the Mighty Mouse rocked otherwise!

  • This is a good tutorial. I used it to keep my Mighty Mouse going for a year or so. Problem is there's only so many times you can open it up and clean it before getting those ribbon cables back in place is almost impossible. Bite the bullet and get a magic mouse. No moving parts so never needs cleaned.

  • @systemsmith Yes but I LIKE the mighty mouse cause it has the squeeze things on the side (a great feature) that the magic mouse doesn't have.

Also, I despise having to by mounds of batteries that need replacing every few months. I've had my mighty mouse since 2008 and just cleaned it out today (dec 2011) for the first time and it's like brand new.

Plus I love knowing how to fix things as opposed to the "throw it away generation."

  • For a wireless Mighty Mouse try the one from tuppyhuh

  • awesome video - nice to find a PROPER description of the whole process from start to finish with no skimming over tricky bits. thats VERY much.

  • thank you:) worked very well!

  • Thanks! You have saved me from continued frustration with my mouse.

  • thank god thank you it was driving me crazy

  • Thanks for posting the vid OP. I used these instructions to dissassemble and repair my mighty mouse. I had a weird clicking / clunking noise. Best I can tell it was coming from grinding in the protruding pieces of plastic which act as the swivel. I used some WD-40 to grease it up and she's sweet to go now.

    Thanks again!

  • Cool! I fixed mine without having to disconnect the wiring.

  • Thank you! That was one big pain in the gluteus maximus but it works. :)

  • okay - this involved production might be necessary under some conditions, but i just discovered from another youtube video that if your problem is just that rolling the scroll wheel isn't producing steady scrolling - it's skipping, or not scrolling at all - then all you need to do is put a piece of clean paper on the desk, turn the mouse upside-down, and roll the scroll ball around on the paper for a few seconds. that will solve the problem!

  • @nikkormac That's brilliant! I was just about to take mine apart when I saw your comment.

(My piece of clean paper isn't clean any longer)

  • @nikkormac worked like a charm in less than 5 seconds

  • @nikkormac i did that already.

  • @nikkormac It worked!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D Thanks!

  • @nikkormac you're fucking brilliant! I was so skeptical, but it worked perfectly. SO simple...lol.

  • @nikkormac wow that's so frickin weird, didn't think it would actually work but it did. amazing. thanks!!!

  • @nikkormac Sometimes just turning the mouse upside down and rolling the ball will clear it. Have also used compressed air.

But rolling it on paper is very good.

  • thanks.... i fixed one with your help, thanks again :)

  • Thanks a lot, now I have a mouse like it was new. One thing, maybe one could avoid braking the outer ring is to use a hobby knife on the last spot of glue. I broke mine. But it doesn't matter it works smooth now :).

  • thanks man

  • thanks for this! put off doing mine for months, I dont know why as I just decided to do it now as I was fed up with it would only scroll up lol, and only took me 5 mins to fix, thanks again!

  • THANKS!! THANKS!! THANKS!! THANKS!!

  • thank you! used a 2p coin which worked a treat!

  • This only works if your mouse did not have a pound of glue like mine died. Tore my mouse to shreds. This is the way Apple wants it to make more money.

  • Oh... I see now you talk about that at 8:20 about....! Sorry.

  • You are right with everything you say in this video, except round about 1:20; to my experience it's not possible to take the ring of without cracking the construction. Anyway, i will glue it, so thanks for the video. The mouse is working perfectly again.

  • Thanks for sharing this!

  • terrific!!! thanks a lot! I did it in just 2 minutes!

  • Thanks. I was about to throw mine away but it's working again now.

  • btw, used thin screw driver to pop glued trim. Came off easy enough.

  • Awesome! Worked like a charm.

I used some clear packaging tape instead of glue. lol. Very thin strips. Didn't want to use super glue and didn't have any other glue on hand at the moment.

  • tnx bro!!!

  • Thanks! It was a little tricky, but I managed to do it and I'm thrilled that my mouse is mighty again!

  • Thank you so much!

  • top tip! Many thanks!!!

  • THANK YOU so much for taking the time to share this! I watched this video 1st, then felt confident enough to go ahead since both the video and your verbal instructions were so step by step and clear. I especially appreciated the warning about lifting off the glued ring; with patience and care it eventually came off (levered with a small very thin screwdriver). With much gratitude :)

  • Top tips in a top video.

    Many thanks.

  • do what zainshafi guy did.

and save yourself creating some dodgy tools, cracking your mouse and do all those other things to it:)

  • don't use some barbaric tool to open your mouse, seriously just use a guitar pick, works well with carefully prying open apple products.

  • Very informative vid, thank you. But when did Kermit the Frog start doin' self help videos? Give my regards to miss Piggy :)

Serious though, you do sound like Kermit which is mint!

  • thanks man!! it worked! i had to try a few times though since it wouldnt scroll upwards when put back into place, i changed the little magnetic bolts around the actual ball and it worked, glued back with gluegun, works like a charm.

toughest part was opening the damn thing, it took long, and i used a wireless mightymouse, it works with this demo also. THANK YOU!

  • GREAT!!!! thanks a lot!!

  • Brilliant, my mouse had stop working ages ago. Tried the simple spin it upside down on some clean paper which worked once but then nothing. Followed this video to the letter and its working again, there was loads of dirt in there, just around one roller.

    Great work.

  • Excellent vid! Just saved my company the price of a new mouse!

Just done mine, but with 2 small (watch makers) screw drivers to, CAREFULLY work round the base. If you go at it ham-fisted you will crack it.

I re-stick the base on with blue-tac - 'cause no doubt it'll need doing again quite soon!

  • As I SCROLL to the comments box, I can now write thank you! :D

  • Thanks, I followed the instructions and it works well. But I did break that rim, in two places, no less.

  • Excellent tutorial completely fixed my scroll wheel issue and right click problem. The paper rolling trick worked for about 6 months but eventually you've just gotta take it a apart and clean it properly !

  • all I can say a million thanks!!!

  • 5 mins fiddly work and a fully working mighty mouse, win win

  • Good effort, but destroyed my mouse using this video. The bottom frame did not snap off; it cracked and broke, so the mouse is shot!

  • thx

  • Excellent instructional video! Thanks for your contribution. Have yet to try it but have no doubt it will work. Convinced that disassembly is really the ONLY way to clean it right. I HATE things that you can't take apart easily - from bicycle components to stuff like this. As a popular pro-football half-time analysis crew would typically lamment - "COME ON, GUYS!!!" - ie - Apple et al - help us all out a bit with 'ease of disassembly' - wouldja!?!?!?! Thanks again for the stellar video!

  • what i did not know how apple seem to make a " symple" mashine even more complex...

its retarded that apple sels these mashines that are so hard to take apart....

was there nobody at apple design that raised there hand and said " hey guis , but how wil wil clean the ball ?? " or did they think it would not get dirty :-S

good reason not to buy apple

  • Many thanks for taking the time to present this thoughtful video. I was able to fix BOTH of my wireless Mighty Mice which saved me over $100 for 10 minutes work. You da man!!!

  • WOOH clean mouse now! :)

  • It would have been extremely helpful to know that I would need glue after taking it completely apart. Also would have been helpful if I didnt have to throw away my mouse when I was finished. Best idea is for apple to make a mouse that is easy to clean. You did a great job on your video, but the mouse just isnt very good.

  • Excellent video work and technical information. Thanks for posting.

  • wow, there was a lot of crap in there, thanks a lot for posting this! i can roll up again!

  • apple need to redesign this mouse so users dont have to go through these. or at least lower the price.

  • Q-tips and a *little* alcohol. No disassemble required

  • Alright got the Krazy Glue and got that stuff is easy to work with but hard to get off of your fingers... BUT the important thing is that I have finished my mildly fun little project. Thank you!

  • I did this with a flat head screw driver, a tiny philips head, and my fingers...

Ugh... I don't have any good of that glue. I'm going out to get some crazy glue tomorrow.

  • thanks a lot!!!!

  • @theeastwatch I got the fizzing sound too then I realised the ribbon was the wrong way round... guess you are just unlucky dude!

I have mine on ebay now if you want a working one LOL

  • Can I just say you are a wonderful human being for posting this video.... My wee mouse is squeeky clean and works perfectly... the wee bugger is going on fle bay now as I bought another one cause my feckin ball wasn't working.... major FAIL! lol

    Thanks

    ;0)

  • Thanks for the video. My mouse is brand new again, this is great. That damn ball was filthy. Also, another tip, hard guitar picks make really good plastic shims for opening the housing. They also work great if you ever need to take apart an older 5th gen etc. iPod.

  • thanks, mine works like charm now :)

  • Thanks dude... nice instructions all around. This did take a while though, and if you're all thumbs, don't try to do this... it's pretty tedious and you may end up with a dead mouse. You can also shove a small brush, like a tooth brush behind the ball (without taking the mouse apart), jiggle it around and loosening any dirt for a quick fix.

  • after a year my mighty mouse's scroll ball finally works. thank you so much

  • After following this vid my mouse is now unusable... I get a hissing noise when I connect the gold ribbon, and the scroll ball and button doesn't respond.

I mean my mouse wasn't working "Great" before, but now its just dead.

    thanks you tube.

    -TEW

  • @theeastwatch and how is that youtube's problem?

  • Clear and detailed instructions. Thanks very much.

  • I literally just finished working on my mouse using and following your instructions! Thank you so much!

  • Very nice job, very helpful. Found second ring was glued in places just had to be careful prying it off. Great results cleaning with Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. Dirt and lint came off very easy. Like new!! Thank you!! Jim Murphy (Cortland NY)

  • Thank a lot. On the back it went a little harder to assemble it. But after some trying I did it :-)

  • Excellent tutorial with good lighting and close up camera work. Very good verbal instruction. The use of hot glue is a smart solution. Thanks.

  • Thanks, I wish there was a better way than gluing it back but your explanation was perfect and answered all my questions. Yay, it works!

  • rubbing the scroll ball every now and then used to work for my mouse but it got to the point where it will not scroll up anymore at all no matter how much I try to rub the mouse. Thanks to your guide my scroll ball is working perfectly again thanks :)

  • este es el mejor método para reparar el mouse. muchas gracias

  • great stuff...really helpful !!!! thanx

  • Thank you so much ! I used this on my wireless mighty mouse. Super glued it back together and now mine scrolls up and down again, and boy was it dirty, I´m gonne give the dirt to my mom so she can nit a sweater. I´ll have to redo my floor after smashing the mouse against it in a weak moment. Thanks again, I´m calm again now.. haha

  • excellent video. I've cleaned it, just letting it dry off. very helpful. I kinda don't like that apple would use glue to hold on that bottom ring, but hey, it's a great mouse.

  • really helpful guide. now my mighty mouse scroll anywhere :)

  • Don't use pliers to grip the little rollers. They break! Now I only have 3 rollers and no sideways scroll. But vertical scroll works brilliantly now I have 3 clean rollers.

  • thanks mate! she scrolls like new once again!

  • I followed the instructions, overall it went well, but my mighty mouse still refuses to scroll up without me putting pressure on the scroll ball. :(

  • Worked great for me. Thanks for the vid.

  • have to be careful with breaking open though. putting back the little rollers was tricky - have to be careful they are in the right place cause the black heads tend to end up more outwards than they should. (in your video i think i spotted that just that happened with the one roller which sits near the flat cable). first try hotmeltingglue impaired clicking a bit. then put the hotmelt onto the ring from the outside of the ring using the hotmeltglue in a sticky-tape fashion.

  • Thanks! but I couldn't get the white ring back on so I used 1second glue to stick it back on. Clicking works less good now but scrolling is amazing :D

  • haha all the bits went ping an scattered across the floor when i did it lol

if that hapens to you grab a magnet and wave it over the carpet coz the little rollers are magnetic

thanks for this video im hapily scrolling through the comments now lol

  • thx a lot ..now my mighty mouse work again

  • why not just roll it across a piece of paper? Your way works to tho

  • As with the wireless as well,

    ctcaller is correct.

The 4 mag rollers had evil mouse funk on the shafts.

    Scrub clean w/alcohol.

    Walla, perfect.

Play gentle with cover to circuit board's tricky ribbon connect clamps.

    PM if needing help.

Several months of cheating, rolling the mouse upside down in all directions on spot of wet alcohol on towel to paper plate does work for a while.

    Clean the laser eye too.

  • too slow ... there's a 30 second method that doesn't require taking apart the mouse

  • TApo7FOl2tc

  • takes some time, but works fine. btw, why did apple glue the mouse? thats is stupido.

  • works perfect.

  • now my side expose' buttons dont work, my scroll wheels doesnt work at all, huge mistake

  • @rgdrum the ribbon cables are probably not seated perfectly - as long as they are intact, try re-inserting them.

  • My mouse only had three of those things :S

I cleaned it because it didn't scroll down, could this be why?

  • Sorted my problem out with your guidance (nothing broke). Thanks very much. Les.

  • Thank you!!! I didn't even break anything. :)

  • Nice post. Not ready to crack one open yet, but will give it a try when I have the time to.

  • Thanks! It worked! :)

Got some scratches though. . :(

  • I took my mouse apart and cleaned the four rollers. Scrolling in all directions works fine now. But, clicking is not as reliable as it was. I often have to click several times before it works. What might be the problem?

  • @ctcaller Took it apart again, found a strand of hair or some fiber wrapped around one of the rollers. Removed it with tweezers because it was stubborn. Put it back together. Works perfectly now.

  • just type youtube first obv

  • for a free mouse

    watch?v=cvO--PuJe7w

  • nvm I got it open but I got a question does anyone know what exactly to use to clean it ? I have some dust inside my mouse I need to get it out should I just blow on it or something? I dont feel like blowing or touching it though... its in many parts of my mouse though and I dunno how to clean the scroll either just alcohol???

  • @cerise333

    Right, Alcohol.

Modified toothbrush works great. Use your brothers.

Q-Tips will, but be careful they don't leave fiber behind.

Breaking loose the glued ring is a pain.

The glue spots seem to be an inch apart around the ring.

Thin short knife worked little by little.

    Good luck.

  • im having the hardest time to pop that little lid thingy open =( I cant seem to be able to do it... v.v is there an easier way to do it?

  • Works a treat for me but I used a retractable knife showing just the tip of the blade to cut round the glued edges. cheers thanks d[o_o]b

  • Check that the scroll ball is working before you secure it in place with the three screws. You can do this be moving the ball in the four directions and making sure that the little wheels rotate. When I first replaced the white housing I could see that one of the wheels wasn't moving because it was caught in the housing. I took the casing off, repositioned the wheels and replaced. When reassembeld the mouse works like new. No need to buy a magic mouse now!

  • I recommend testing the scroll button before you glue. After I glued, I discovered that it didn't scroll in one direction. Opening it back up wasn't a problem and I unscrewed the ball housing the 2nd time without disconnecting the cables, wiggled things around a bit and then it worked fine. Oh, and also check your clicks. I had a spelling error in this post I discovered I couldn't right click. Again, it fixed just fine with a little checking connections. Just test before you glue!

  • I used a guitar pick to get the plastic clip off the back and the case didn't crack at all, if you gently slide the pick round the gap, the thickness of the pick gradually works the bottom clip off without damaging it. Mouse is working sweetly now, Cheers, great video. Now all i've got to do is to stick the bottom back on with iGlue.

  • Took me about an hour, Was very deliberate. Trickiest part was getting the white cage to snap on over the ball. If you clean it be very careful of the tiny prongs as they bend easily. I bent one and that's why the difficulty getting back on...THANKS FOR GREAT VIDEO Was about to find a new one on ebay. Works like new now!

  • thanks,the mouse work again.......

  • yes this definetly works.. but lot of job... f*cking mighty mouse.... a wired magic mouse would be great...

  • Without doubts, the best apple mouse clean video. Thanks!!

  • Apple just love glues...

Apples can be sticky... it makes sens..

  • Thank you very much, very useful. clean my wireless mouse and it works like a charm. good quality video with nice close-up and clear instruction. 5/5

  • whoa. the plastic ring snaps really easily.

  • every trick to clean it worked for at most a day and the wheel still wont work so i threw it a wall

  • Way too difficult for non-professional and may cause the mouse disorder

    Thank you

  • I think if you're smart enough to be able to use a mouse then you're smart enough to follow the steps in this video... it worked for me and I'm no pro...

  • Worked perfectly! Thanks!

  • Thanks, it works perfectly again!

  • thanks for this guide!

  • Thanks for this video - my mouse is working great now!!

  • Before trying this, just rub the scroll ball against a sheet of paper, holding the mouse upside down. It worked for me.

  • hey man, thanks alot for the video. my mouse works perfectly.!!

  • damn i broke the ring!!! lol but as longh as its glued it doesnt matter!

  • Great video, but after watching this I just went and ordered a magic mouse.

  • yeah, me too lol too much trouble.

  • holy christmas!. no wonder the damn thing wasn't working, it was loaded with dust and fluffy gunk, thatnks heaps for this videa, you saved me 50 muchs on buyin a new mouse

  • this is great - thanks so much! Now, how about embedding selected user ideas in text box in your current vid? For instance, to pry loose the ring, I'd rather use a heavy-gauge guitar pick than hack a piece of binder plastic. But that's a suggestion I might easily have missed...

  • i waited for the magic mouse.

  • Dozmen12 said.... a guitar pick works like charm to remove the bottom ring.

The real hard part was putting it back. Why the hell do they glue it?!?!?! Anyway, it works fine without the ring and will make things easier next time I have to clean it again.

But if f you're glueing it back again, make sure you won't make it too hard to remove next time...

    Thanks man, great video!

  • They don't use screws because they're... Bad for the aesthetic? Apple makes no sense sometimes.

  • Yet another triumphant design marvel from Apple, the only computer manufacturer daring enough to ask "Who would ever have need for an eject button on a disc drive when you can unbend a paper clip to jab in there instead?" for over three decades.

  • Great video, David. It worked as a charm. Thank you so much!

Shame on Apple for producing a mechanical product that is not maintainable by the average user.

  • i cant get the side buttons to clip in properly!

  • Have watched this video several times and finally decided to give it a shot. It works like a magic. Highly recommend if you found the old "scroll-against-paper" method fails to fix your mouse.

  • Works like new now :o)

Had a full furr ball going on inside mine!

  • Mine didn't work at all either up or down. A nice rubbing with ethanol and compressed air fixed it. I didn't need to take it apart.

  • thanks a lot, works like a new one! great feeling ;) no need to buy a new mouse

  • Great.... i did this and now rolling much better,,,,

    Thanks mate

  • sweet dude. thanks.

  • To separate the bottom ring from the mouse you can use a hot hair drier to help pry it out.

  • thanks for the video. took mine apart to find out the scroll wheel ribbon cable wasnt connected haha

  • Been using my wireless mouse for about 1,5 year. Just last month the scroll ball have been acting weird. Never thought it could dirt or gunk inside. Being a student, there really isn't much money for new stuff. So thanks man!

  • Thanks for posting that. My girlfriend has the same issue. I am well used to taking these sorts of things apart due to my job but this has taken the mystery out of it. Much appreciated, really.. ;)

  • So good that they god rid of this annoying scoll-ball in the magic mouse!

  • Awesome! Disassembled, Cleaned and Put Back Together In Less Than 10 Minutes!

  • ok when i tried reconnecting the cables i had two unsuccessful attempts then the tract ball connector SNAPED and now i have no secondary click and no working trackball

  • Thanks a lot. This was a great help for me. Just one comment: removing the gray frame from the bottom wasn't as easy as shown in the video.

  • i did this worked very well!, just doesn't scroll down anymore!

  • Thank you!

  • Bloody genius! Thanks for your help.... and VERY clear video instructions!

  • THANKS!

  • I have done this a few times, the rollerball is like new afterwards. As for prying it apart part i just use a guitar pick, it works like a charm.

  • hahah.. 1:53 "We're going to gently pry"

right..because it's possible to gently pry at something

  • ...your point being...?

  • thank god i got a pc. i think reinstalling everything is even easier than doing this. holy crap...

  • Macs you NEVER reinstall anything!!! hahaha

    and mighty mouses are crap

  • all u have to do is roll it over a blank sheet of paper... lol

  • Good Info, thanks.

Good mouse all around. But maintenance wise it is a little flimsy! The first seal that is glued on could have been snapped on for easy maintenance. But then again if they last to long no one will replace them.

  • Really incredible, thanks!

  • AWESOME! my mouse now works like new! Thanks DitzlerPhoto!

  • Great tutorial! You can use a golf peg as a separator, works great. Now my mouse works as it did when it was new! Thanks!

  • My heart dropped when the ring finally cracked - but hey, the mouse is as functional as it was before! Thank you!

  • its a little messy, but it worked fine for me!
