nice job man don't listen to all this useless comments they are the best in the corner of their room,you tried you can do better i love your solo,i play alto sax also,why cant we appreciate one anther instead of criticizing shit
@yohannes80 You think he plays the sax to a low level? I don't hear it to be honest, he sounds good to me. I saw him when he played at the Barbican with Antibalas last year. The roof nearly came off when he blew a solo over an old Fela tune (Opposite People I think) - the crowd went crazy.
well come on than! this dude has no idea what he is doing, he is just wildly playing everything that he is able to to do on the sax. and thats not much. he has no embochure, no fingering, his sound is weak, his ideas awful.
all he got is passion, i guess thats what musical idiots like.its like saying mcdonalds is good food because its tasty.....
@yohannes80 I see what you mean about ideas, but I think it's not always possible or even appropriate to play a sophisticated well-crafted "technically impressive" solo. Sometimes the music only allows you to add energy and groove (which is what he is doing). Afrobeat is linear so there isn't all that much you can do melodically, it's not like he's got the changes to Giant Steps to work with.
Also, I don't think it's right to judge quality based on technical displays. It's not a circus show.
Blah blah blah ya'll! Till you have seen them LIVE - you dare not say a word. They are magnificent - filling the air with their pristine sounds of goodness and consciousness raising lyrics. So there!
It becomes very obvious that folks that question peoples music don't play music themselves. There is this little thing called influence, and Roland Kirk and kids from ANB would tell you the same shit. Go see Antibalas and let THEIR music be what gives you a feeling, not a youtube post. Your opinion is respected, but dont hit someones music when you sit at a computer to do it.
There are those that go into their labs, like Fela, and mix and match and come up with genius. This genius inspires others either to go into their own labs to work or they go on to venerate the original genius, spreading the word. Both are worthwhile and legitimate especially since the original genuis in question, Fela, cannot testify in person any longer.
My God, I only told they just copy sombody's music. It's not so bad to tell that. Listen to Armenian Navy Band. That's fresh, genuine. Listen to Orchestra Baobab. Or even Roland Kirk. I think this is music just for urban people, occidental people. No feeling, no authentic. And please respect my opinion too. Viva Galicia!
and? you are a genious of music. of course fela did it years ago. and? what's the problem? there was people talking thirty years ago, like you. so you will never talk again?

@yohannes80 what don't you like about his playing? genuine enquiry.
awreckingball 7 months ago
@awreckingball
long sentence short: he tries, but can`t....
passion in not all that counts....
could tell you more but have to know how far your pre-knowledge is...and sorry for my english, im no native.....
yohannes80 7 months ago
@yohannes80 What do you think he can't do? I'm a musician, pianist and trumpeter with 25 years experience.
awreckingball 7 months ago
@awreckingball
then i skip the part about him playing the sax on a low level. but as a musician you should hear that tough.....
have you ever tried to improvise for yourself?

Yes, I improvise, that's how I make money.

@awreckingball
that argument always appears. and than we talk about monk, rheinhards, waits etc.....
the big point in music is not to create just technic or just passion. its getting the technic you need to handle the passion you feel....
not sure if you got "linear" right, its often justed in combination with polyphony so it wouldnt fit here.
maybe you mean "modal" and there are plenty possibilities to create melodies/rhythm too.
