haha! Beautiful! It's no uncommen for horses to do this, as when I was 7 my dad saw my pony laying on her side, sleeping in the sun and he thought she had dropped dead! Mum had to explain to him! So funny!
awwwww so cute :) i love the other horse's face in the background, super adorable. and at the end he just like.... oo i don't even know how to describe it. so adorable!
No, horses do not die of internal organ failure if they sleep out flat. You're thinking of elephants. They don't always feel safe enough to go into deep sleep, but there is no mechanical reason they can't lie full-out, and many horses love to. All of my horses have felt comfortable enough to sleep flat-out. Horses don't sleep as much as other animals (because they have to keep eating) so an hour or two is the most they generally sleep.
@RedDeadRedemption93 Not at all. The only way a horse can get REM sleep - deep sleep, dreaming sleep - is if they are lying down. REM sleep is essential to all creatures, horses included.
haha aww. I'm thinking about getting a horse once i'm settled in life, but i can't find any good videos or websites on Clydesdale, the horse im in love with, animal care.
@brunettenekogurl2000 It's only bad for them to lay on their side for long periods of time. And by long periods of time I mean a couple hours. Horses often lay down for short periods of time to get in a good power nap. I've caught my two horses and numerous others flopped down in a fresh bed of shavings to take a snooze. One was even snoring once! The horse in this clip was doing another common behavior: rolling around to scratch an itchy back. Or just because it felt good.
@D0N0tJudgeMe Actually, their internal organs will begin to fail after eight hours. So I dont care if they are in perfect health. When I see a horse on its side, I run out there and make sure its okay. My aunt used to be a full time vet, and it doesnt matter, i is unhealthy for a horse to lay on their side. They sleep standing up, and if they are extremely tired, they lay down. But not on their sides, they lay with their front legs under them, their back legs on the side of them.
@DragonballLuv3r I never said the horses I see laying down to take a snooze were laying flat out. They were indeed laying 'upright', as you described. And as I also said, it's bad if they stay on their sides for long periods of time. I would call 8 hours a long period of time, wouldn't you? And whenever I see a horse laying flat out on it's side, I usually keep an eye on it and if it stays down for too long I will either find someone who knows it or try to get it up myself.
@D0N0tJudgeMe Horses only sleep for about four hours at a stretch. If they can't get up, that's indicative of a more serious problem than lying on thier sides.
@DragonballLuv3r not babys... my friend has a young colt and when he was 2 or 3 days to 4 or 5 months he would streach out in the sun on a hill and sleep for about 3 to 4 hours then sit up for a while maybe get something to eat/drink then be out again... he is a very lazy baby. He's a bit more active now but he still likes to nap alot.
@DragonballLuv3r you are actually thinking of elephants, giraffes and other extreemly large animals. my mum is a vet and so are two of my uncles its kind of like our family business i'm in school for it right now. and horses do not go into internal organ failure until they have been down for over 20 hours, though the larger horses do tend to speed that time up a bit from the excess of weight. also if they lay down with their legs tucked under for too long they will gain pressure sores on them
@1984Magda they can gain pressure sores but that i'm aware of they don't usually get colic from laying down, though they will lay down and roll sometimes if they already have colic the way to tell the difference between a roll where they are scratching and the roll caused by colic is to see if they have excess sweat around their haunches and girth areas and to check and see if their gums are pale or if their muscles are shivering and twitching if its yes to all three get them up and walk them
@1984Magda They can get colic from laying down too long but most won't unless there is something REALLY wrong with them. Even horses with horrid feet problems (bad bad laminitis) will get up more often than that.
@D0N0tJudgeMe I've actually seen a couple horses that will sleep for a couple hours....naturally they're they lazier ones in the barn :) If a horse that is usually more active in their stall sleeps for a long while or lays down quite a few times in the day it's more of a concern.
@vulcansailor That's a good question. I would too like to know as well. Most breeds have a dappled colouration versions. It is a very large built horse so it is likely a workhorse of some type. The most common type of workhorse with a dappled coat is the Percheron. That is what I think it is, but I am no expert.
Oh my gosh. That is literally the prettyiest clyde ive EVER seen! I swear! i love is coat pattern!!!!!! And lol he looked small on teh ground but when he got up i was like "OHMYGOSH HES HUGE!" thanks for sharing!!
Oh god they are wonderful, i live in australia but when im older i so want to move to canada or colorado. I really want to breed these beauties. Same with the Hybrid Wolves i want to breed, they are great. i love animals so much.
Lovely! He/she was very dozy and obviously not a morning person! I so wanted her/him to roll onto the other side. The grey percheron seemed to wonder what all the fuss was about!
