I am hoping some rich dude buys a ton of cargo, and makes a ton of coins, and then tells the islanders that he will come back 400 years from now with new cargo, and coins. That way the islanders don't get disappointed waiting for something that is not coming.

They would reject your facts and evidence and call you an idiot scientist since you are challenging their false and deluded belief.
FAITH! Wether Christian or a Cargo Cult - it always works the same!
"John Frum" is a MUCH cooler name than "Jesus"! And so is "The Flying Spaghetti Monster"!! "Jesus", who came up with that name, some mexican guy or something? : )
@greenghost2008 Yeah, I have part 1 & 2 and they are interesting. They ain't got anything on the "Faces of Death" or "Traces of Death" series though when it comes to shock value.
I have just read an article that these people will not allow their children to go to school as it is against the wishes of John Frum. They now have there own political party and have a seat in the parliament. This really is like Christianity in microcosm. It seems laughable to those that have not been raised with it and to those same people you can see how destructive it is.
@obaidCarkey Your kidding me right? Islam is a rip-off of Christianity, except it was a story by a pedo who couldn't even read or write and story is about Jesus who enjoyed cursing at fig tree. Religious people need to grow and stop trying to keep mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawn enough destruction throughout the ages. GROW UP!
No, Islam is a rip-off of Judaism. Muslims believe that Moses and all the other Prophets got it wrong and only Muhammad received God's word correctly. This is one of the reasons why Muslims believe Islam supersedes Judaism and Christianity.

"Religious evolution" seems like a metaphor that have run wild (and thus is a dangerous mind virus). The religious "evolution" seem to make jumps that is very rarely counterparted by jumps in biological evolution.
Dawkins is wonderful to listen to. So articulate and knowledgeable... it's amazing more religious people aren't immediately waken up when they encounter his stuff. I'd almost think his materials would spread in a cult-like fashion amongst former-believers with the people who still do believe, in order to wake them up.
@pokerslut530 I'm constantly astounded that so many people take him so seriously, and that his work has achieved such a cult-like status, with all the nonsense he spews. This video is a perfect demonstration on just how myopic Dawkins' reasoning commonly is. The entire cargo-cult phenomena is based on an entirely objective, and to the practitioners, supremely miraculous event. The question Dawkins wont address is: What was the miraculous and objective event which began Christianity?
Nonsense? What exactly is nonsense about what is said?
Cult-like status??? I wouldn't go that far. He's simply one of the most prominent scientists speaking out about religion. Yes, there are other similar people, like Christopher Hitchens, but few who produce as many comprehensive documentaries like the one here. His popularity, in my opinion, is a direct result of his higher level of exposure to the general public.
The miraculous event you refer to was the importation of devices such as a radio. How did you miss this point? He clearly explains that, (paraphrased) "since they had never seen a radio before, it was automatically magic - therefor the bearers must be gods".
As to what particular event that sparked Christianity; the point of this video is to illustrate that basic naiveté can convince groups of people of astounding things, including supernatural powers.
I've seen grass seeds turn into grass, I've seen various vegetable seeds grow into their respective vegetables and I've seen sunflower seeds grow into sunflowers.
I've never seen a Sequioa seed, but since there are Sequioa trees and the result is similar to that of sunflowers, vegetables & grass, I accept that the Sequioa grew from a seed.
Just because I can't always see a specific event initiate, it doesn't mean it can't be deduced reasonably. You are grasping at straws.
It's Dawkins that's implying the Sequoia did not grow from a seed. The "cargo cult" grew as a reaction to the practitioner's experiencing actual, objective and seemingly miraculous events. If Dawkins is trying to draw parallels, then he must concede that a logical parallel is that Christianity is based on objective and seemingly miraculous events. That would seem to be an odd concession from an atheist-zealot like Dawkins, however.
And, I'm not "grasping" at anything - I have no interest in any conclusions regarding any religion. I'm just pointing out one of many all to common logical flaws in Dawkins thinking.
There's nothing objective about any of this. By definition, objective observations can't be argued. The very fact that there's differing opinions on the observations within the context of these clips is validation of their subjectivity.
Even you yourself state an oxymoron by quoting "objective" and "seemingly miraculous" in the same context. If an observation is seemingly anything, it's definitely subjective. You're not quite as logically objective as you think you are.
That's just patently false. The nature of the event may be subjective, aspects of the event may be subjective; the event itself is not. If you believe that many hundreds of American military personnel landing on an island, setting up a fully functioning military base, and carrying out war-time military operations over the course of years is an entirely subjective event - then you must believe there's no such thing as an objective event. And, as such, your entire argument becomes absurd.
Obviously I wasn't clear. I'm not saying the event(s) was subjective, I'm saying the recounting of the event(s) was subjective. I'm sure something happened in Jerusalem in around 33AD, but there's very little to suggest it was the crucifixion of the creator of the universe.
And since there's no objective record of the events regarding the roots of Christianity (eg video footage, photographs or archaeological evidence), your "logical parallel" that "Dawkins must concede" is "patently false".
In fact, I think we might even be converging on the same point from different positions. (Although I could be wrong).
Let me just say plainly that I think the "cargo cult" is a good example of how religion arises and how probable it is that religions are a human creation with no basis in divinity... in every... single... case.

Religion is a dead language which has no value.
Religion is a living fossil of the intellectual evolution of mankind.
Religion is simply the deluded thinking and fantasy of man.
Religion is the devalued past of mankind.
Intelligence, perception and above all, a seeking mind can, and will reveal both the truth in life and the deceptions with which mankind fools itself.
Intelligent evolution is our future.

You couldn't write anything funnier!
The cargo cults probably displaced earlier religions. With the resistance our religions have to intrusion, it is amaing how fast it happened.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
choose this day who you will serve. the living GOD or whatever else it is that you serve. the choice is yours. GOD sent his Son to serve man, live a sinless life to be a living sacrifice for your sins. do you accept this? If so ask Jesus into your heart and repent of your sins. There is no name greater than Jesus. On the day of judement every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus the Christ is LORD. the choice is yours.

If I were a billionaire, I'd visit the island one Feb 15 with a few C-130 cargo planes full of all kinds of shit (cargo)--just to blow the Islanders fucking minds!

I've read this book a few times, and I often listen to random chapters from the audio book on my iPod, so I am well acquainted with Dawkins' text; that said, it was VERY enjoyable listening yet again while watching your accompanying imagery. Very well done!
Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing. It'd be fun to play god for bit.

Dawkins once again flawlessly shames the idea of god belief.
