Are you kidding me? Kubrick has an incredibly dark sense of humor. Not only this, but Lolita, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket. There is such a thing as black comedy.
It is funny how this movie has been always so acclaimed, considering that it is a comedy made by, after all, one of the few filmmakers in the long history of film who had absolutely no sense of humour. And I don't mean to underestimate Kubrick...he is one of my favourite filmmakers: I love Barry Lyndon and like a lot A Clockwork Orange, 2001, Paths of Glory, The Killng, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, even The Shining...but humour was just not his thing... :p
I mean (just to elaborate): where can humour be found in Stanly Kubrick's filmography? Almost nowhere...all his movies are so grave and solemn...and in this case, even if the visual and narrative construction are peculiar, I think the movie tries to be funny by simply exaggerating every action and characterization to the point that it becomes absurd...but there is no comic timing, there is no wit, it completely lacks rhythm...honestly, I love Kubrick, but he had the sense of humour of a cylon...
@EdwardElric555 ok thats fine well this isn't one of the funniest scenes in the movie but i do love this scene. Only people who have seen the movie will probably enjoy this to the level that i did.

This scene is so damn brilliant. Peter Sellers is amazing! In the commentary, they said that Peter Sellers improved everything past the "Hello Demitri!"

I imagine that it was a hoot when it first came out, but this comedy didn't age well. I couldn't stop myself from smiling the first five seconds because it was so embarrassing, but then it just goes on and on... What, the absurdity of the situation is what makes it funny? That's just stupid.

This is a really well-chosen scene (well done the poster!). The 'regret gap' phone call is just classic. It quite brilliantly reinforces the film's gentle (in spite of its theme) reminder to the laughing audience of the depth and scale of our folly.
That sounded pompous, didn't it? Well, I just don't care...
In my humble opinion (and bless Mr. Kubrick for making this film!) I reckon this is one of the best films outlining the futility and stupidity of war - along with 'All quiet on the western front' - that last scened with the poppy is brilliant!
I heard that Kubrick asked George C. Scott that during filming they do each scene a few times, and for each scene to act "Over the top" at least once. When the film was finally edited together all the scenes where he acted "Over the top" were the only ones Kubrick used.

This phone "conversation"was completely improvised by Sellers, it wasn't included in any script, he just picked up the phone and began to improvise.
