The "Mars" lights are an expensive worthless fun gimmick.

Lights would be far more effective if coordinated to flash ALL ON/ALL OFF

@FFDAN45 I changed our lights and made themuch moreffective.

Siren is needed less because the lights are noticed earlier.

Lights with that black background would be even morevident!

I'd like to own a Mars light to show how it works.

@robertgift - The Mars lights may not be as effective as the Roto-Ray, bit calling it "worthless" is way off base. If you watch starting at about 1:50, you can see they are actually pretty effective and bright when they hit the camera. The Roto-Ray is most effective directly in front but not as much to the sides. The Mars lights maintain their effectiveness throughout their turn angle.

The combination of two mars lights and the Roto-Ray on this truck make for a nice combo, in my opinion.

@ArxVirtus "when they hit the camera" - Much of the light does not enter motorists' eyes.

Sweeping right and left gets everyones eyes. Not a certain percentage of the time on the pavement or up in the sky. R to L is far better than /\/\. Mars is also useless for intersections as Roto-Ray.

Too many lights are aimed forward and none or too little 90-degrees to the sides. Ouridiculous Federal Signalight bar 360s were block by alley lights. We need more for entering red intersections.

@robertgift - Not sure where this department is, but when you live in a mountainous/hilly area like I do, the Mars is pretty effective when cresting a hill where a standard right-to-left sweep just shines up in the sky.

Federal Signal made a beacon which had one of the four PAR36 bulbs aimed up at 40 degrees?

Years ago, when I coordinated the red, white (clear) and blue lights of our Code 3 light bar, the lights drew the attention of driverso much better thathey pulled over much further ahead. We needed the siren much less and made better progress. The Mars light is moreffective if one disconnects the up and down and has it sweep right and left.

@robertgift Alot of departments have there apparatus painted black over red. Chicago of course is best known for it. They began painting the top of the cabs black in honor of fallen firefighters.
