I have seen a video where he does this fill you refer to which is right after the solo with the bow on the guitar.... He did it with one hand!!! One hand was twirilling a stick and the other was going very RAPIDLY across all 3 heads ie snare and toms It was crazy to see because when I always heard it I thought it had to be two sticks not one. Im trying to hunt down the clip now. I have seen a clip where he does as you show

@GetZapt He did the one-handed thing a lot in Communication Breakdown. There's a good shot of him doing it on the French TV appearance from 1969 Tous En Scene.
If you see my Communication Breakdown video, I demonstrate it there.
Awesome video, and hows about sending me one of those snares sitting there just crying out to replace a young drummers hand me down Pearl Forum piece of crap snare lol?
ive been whatching earls court and it looks to me hes basically using singles and hitting the flr tom twice, sandwiching the bd twice between the flr tom and maybe also kicking the bd once w the rack tom
actually, i now believe youre right that hes paradidlishing bc watching his left hand i can see hes hitting 3 times and accenting the backbeat the 2nd time he uses his left; i believe youre using your left twice. also i now hear bonhams bd joining his last flr tom hit before kicking the bd again alone instead of sandwiching them. also im pretty sure hes bd with rack tom and it feels good to add an 'a' w the bd before getting to the flr tom.
Check out the version in TSRTS again. The last time he plays this riff he throws in something a little different between the floor tom and the rack tom. I can't play it, otherwise I would post a vid. Also check out that Bonham & JPJ are having some little conversation after this riff about when to come in. Jones can clearly be seen saying "oops" to Bonham. Bonham shakes his head and then comes in later than Jones suggested. Quite cool to see this interaction between them.
I know the part you mean. At the end of the riff he bounces back and forth between the 18 & the 14. The rack takes the place of the last BD note of the regular pattern and then he hits the 18 again and then the 14 to end it. (It adds two 16ths to the riff).

well, the last time he does it is doubled out since the volume goes way down. also, when its loud hes quartering the hihat all the way through.

It is a very cool part of the movie!

yeah, an 'a' w the bd right before the backbeat w the left.
sticksbass 2 years ago
actually, it feels good to me to also kick the bd right on the 1st hit of the flr tom for a total of 4 bd notes!
sticksbass 2 years ago
i mean 5 not 4.
sticksbass 2 years ago
haha, well i videod myself playing it with all those bd notes and its 'cluddery'; im going to try it without the bd notes in the middle.
