I can remember sitting there at age 12 with my grandparents hearing reagan talk about the terrible idea of leaving a huge debt to the kids and grandkids. Every year from every president since then I have heard the same thing and watched the debt do nothing but increase. I have come to the conclusion that every November this country goes insane and votes for the same thing while expecting a different result that we never get. In Canada, our average retirement age is 65, so we're essentially shocked at the selfishness of the citizens, that they aren't willing to work to fix their economy, and expect the world to just bail them out, despite the fact they're now proven to be lazy, and enabling this activity is only going to make them lazier.

The EFFECTIVE retirement in both has for YEARS been very close to that of Germany, 61,6.

REGARDLESS, the effective retirement age in Italy, the mean age of retirees, is about 61. Germany is 61.7, Greece 61.4.
So this has been a populist argument. On average they retire at about the same age.
