isn't chlorine put in swimming pools and tap water to kill bacteria, the very same tap water that I drink every day and ask myself whether it is poisonous or not?
@silverleaf81 it's because sodium has one outer electron and chlorine has seven so it comes together very tightly making it not very toxic. Plus chlorine is a gas and it turns into acid in your lungs where in salt, it's already reacted and is a solid.
chlorine is poisonous because its reactive. once it has reacted in a way that it is stable then it is not dangerous. Hydrochloric acid is dangerous because it is still unstable
@flagman57 hydrochloric acid is stable but it easily releases it's hydrogen atoms as any other acid would(actually now when i think about it i don't really know can youconsider it unstable)
@gaswerti i meant reactive, not unstable. only radioactive isotopes can be considered unstable. when HCl acid gives up its hydrogen ions, that leaves the chlorine to react with the result. therefore making hydrochloric acid extremely reactive.
I've been a subscriber for some time although I'm not exactly a science person :) Your videos are very interesting.
Recently I started keeping fish and albino frogs and so became interested in water preparation for aquariums (sorry I hope it's not too random a question). There seems to be an ongoing debate about chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) among the fishkeeping circles. The question is: does chloramine dissipate if just let sit for a week? If so, what conditions should be met? Thanks.
My name is Anita.I m 13 and I m a student of the bilingual gimnazium in Poland. And I find your vidoes very interesting and usfull in my learnig of chemistry in Englisch.Thank you :)
2:30 is that the powder that reacts with brake fluid and alcohol and also cola? plz tell me how i can make it if you know i really wanna try the thing with chlorine and brake fluid :D
Chlorine is really bad stuff but bromine is MUCH worse. Since you are more likely to encounter bromine in the liquid form, the vapor cncentration is MUCH higher than a few puffs of chlorine. Bromine attacks the lungs but is VERY aggresive towards the nasel passages. And if bromine is spilled on HDPE plastic pails it will tear it to shreds!!
When a train wrecked and spilled tons of Co2. A nearby town died in huge numbers. The keys in their pockets turned green. This is how a few smart people figured out what was happening before more died.
i made chlorine once. I planned on making acid but made chlorine gas instead. i caught a few long whiffs of it and threw the bottle out of the window (lol) but i didnt get sick exept some burning. i wanted to drink some water but at least a had the sense not to.
isnt stomach acid hydrochloric acid, so if he drank water, everything ywould be fine. The chlorine goes to stomach and lungs, and the water goes to stomach...
Yes, the stomach is hydrocloric acid. But the stomach is built to resist it. You're lungs is manly made of water; therfore when Clorine is inhaled it will form hydrocloric acid. Disloving you're lungs in the progress. By the way, you would inhale the Clorine not swallow it, so it wouldn't go into your stomach.
i don't know if this is true, but my mom said that i got some kind of allergic reaction or something to chlorine when i was little and i ended up puking all night...i remember the horrible puking but don't really remember anything about the chlorine
I was raised with clothe nappies as I was alergic to the throw away ones and they were fine (that was in 1980 btw). People should use them now as we're all meant to recycle as they're a lot less wasteful when you think that a baby uses like 4 desposable ones a day!
No, it's called English. Every other English-speaking country uses an adaptation of English. Saying "British English" is both tautological and absurd because that's where English came from in the first place.
Isn't it amazing how insular Americans are that they only know of the terms and expressions that their country uses. Whereas most other English-speaking countries know all about the American terms that get used! (It's well known, for instance, that Americans call nappies "diapers".)
It doesn't matter that "British English" can be found on wiki. My point is that it's a stupid term. English *originated* from Britain, so it's a tautology to say "British English".

'This is the only element I'm quite happy to leave inside the container.' So far I've seen you leave 20 inside! IF it's so toxic why do they put it in swimming pools and why is it already in the sea? Mother nature has it all worked out... Surley this is a flaw?
You don't properly understand the meaning of toxic - substances are only toxic if there is a high enough concentration; even water is toxic to humans if you ingest too much of it. There can be tonnes of chlorine in the sea, but it's so dilute that it's harmless. Listen to what he says about the concentration of chlorine gas in the canister - it's 99.5%, so he's right to leave it in the container! Hope this explains it.
I used to work at Water Park as a mechanic for the bug pumps. When had to put the chlorine in the master filter we put on the old army gasmask. Because when we opened the drum a mushroom cloud of green Chlorine gas would great us. When i look back now it is amazing noone got hurt.

Only in higher concentratiions. In low concentrations (not much more than you get at the swimming pool), I think it smells quite nice

It most definitely isn't a flaw. Chlorine is put in swimming pools to disinfect the water. Disinfect means "kill bacteria (germs)".
The chlorine in the sea is mostly a part of sodium chloride = salt.
Even though chlorine is quite toxic, it is also a necessity of life. Without chlorine, we would be dead.
As toxicologists put it: the poison is in the dose. In the right dose it is beneficial. In the wrong dose is is lethal.
BartVanBockstaele 3 years ago 3
also the chlorine put into pools is a compound cuz pure chlorine is usually gas
