i have a 50 cal flintlock rifle i have shot round ball a couple of times but not a lot i do rev war reenactments and i would like to shoot shot so i can go squirrel hunting, but im not sure on how much powder or how much shot to use, can you help me
@ggboy9632 Start with a 50 Frain measure of 2f powder and then use the same measure of powder. You can probably go up to 80 grains with no issue. Alwys use the same or more measure by volume of shot to powder.
@bgeipel thanks a munch, but im not shure what a frain measure is.so do i always measure more shot then powder or are you saying to load 80 grains and measure 50 grains of shot.
@ggboy9632 Hmm - I just re-read your initial post. You say you have a 50 cal rifle. Putting shot down a rifle could damage the rifling in the barrel. I would not do it. To use it for Squirrel, I would use a .490 cal ball, 020 inch patch and a very low powder charge - say 25-30 grains.
Let me try typing this from a proper keyboard so I wont make so many mistakes.
FIrst off, I meant to say "grains", not "frains"
The rule of thumb is to use the same about of shot "by volume" as powder. So, if you use a 50 grain powder measure, use the exact same measure for your shot. Never use less shot than powder, but you can experiment with more shot than powder.
@notregme The fowler was made by Jack Duprey from Michigan. My max load is 50grns, so I do not know how 80-100 grains would group. My groups with 45 grains are around 2" at 25 yards.
@bgeipel wow 50 is the max, the group sounds good.I have a plains rifle and it would be about the same gauge , but a heavier barrel .Im thinking of getting a smooth boar as well. Id like be be able to take large game at 50-70 yards as well as small game.I was thinking 58-75 cal muskets. any data I can get will help me. thanks for getting back to me, sorry for being a pest.lol
@notregme Most Fowlers have an "Octagon to round" barrel where the octagon portion can stand higher pressures. This fowlers has a damascus style full round so the walls around the chamber are fairly thin. I would not want to push it to hard. There are lots of good choices out there in the .54 - .62 cal range which make very versatile weapons.
I bought it at the Contemporary Longrifles Association Show held every August in Lexington, KY. This fowler was made by Jack Duprey.
