We sold weapons and trained bin laden and his army to go against the soviet union in the late 70s. @CUjoBitME: Also, Saddam Hussein came to power in 1979. The US had absolutely nothing to do with it. He was part of multiple coup attempts by the Baath party and eventually became the #2 man for Ahmed Hassan Bakr. He became Head of State in '79 and killed all of his rivals.
Now, during this time, America was still involved in the Cold War and really had nothing to do with the Middle East with the exception of the US Embassy seizure by Iran.

There are so few cases of a Service member killing innocent. That happens so rarely, although, it has happened. However, how can the 2 or 3 people be used to discriminate against the remaining millions in the military? @888777888x: You are partially correct. What is now the Taliban WAS funded by the US back in the Mid-80s. They were the Mujahadeen back then and we were helping them because the Soviets were causing problems.
If any of our money is getting to them, it is because they are taking the Foreign Assistance money from the Afghani people. I'm sure that happens. Now, what are we, as a country, supposed to do? Cut off aid entirely? I'm sure you'd have a hayday with that.
