Three things are absolutly true: This was a fantastic concert held at the football stadium in Harare Zimbabwe, but Zim.has fallen into absolute shambles under the corrupt leadership of Robert Mugabe who has commited crimes against humanity and genocide, both black and white citizens of Zim. He is a racist in the purist sence of the word slaughtering thousands of black Matabeles. He is also a socialist, referring to himself as comrad president. Most americans do not even know where Zimbabwe is.
I was earning about ZWD $385.00 then and I sure had a gud time then.Best and professional concert ever held and I am glad I was there and my eyes swell when i think of those good times
@deegeek1970 Black people are also racist. I was not making any racial remark. I was making a general statement about how SA used to be. Just to be clear, I am free and yes there is equality in SA. I am not suffering from any inferioir complex, so I dont know what you are implying by your statement. learn to read properly! I dont care about race, we are all peeps. Peace
@deegeek1970 listen mates, I cannot make a such statements, I dont think all SA whites are racist, some really fought for freedom in SA. Anyway, some Black people are also racist. I was not making any racial remark. I was making a general statement about how SA used to be.
That guitarist is Ray Phiri from a great band South African band called STIMELA. He's a great guitarist and a better singer than Simon. I was planning to go to this concert but had my money stolen at Harare Youth Hostel so couldn't attend--boo hoo!
wiki: Simon faced accusations that he had broken the cultural boycott imposed by the rest of the world against the apartheid regime in South Africa, which was in its final years at the time. This view was not supported by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee, as the album showcased the talents of the black South African musicians while offering no support to the South African government.
This is a fantastic concert. To the person who said shame on Zimbabwe, the country has fallen into terrible ruin and destruction since the 80's and is now a destitute and poverty stricken nightmare. I think that a concert that took place twenty years ago is the least of their problems. It was a wonderful concert
It WAS a great concert. It was a peaceful, positive event attended by black and white people, without incident. Paul Simon was initially discouraged by South
African authorities from mounting this show. They told him they could not guarantee his safety, and wanted no
I don't think zulugang meant the concert was a shame for Zimbabwe - what has happened since is the shame. I remember when this concert was staged, and at the time it was such a beacon of hope - in 1987, South Africa was hopelessly mired in injustice, whereas Zimbabwe seemed to have managed the transition to a 'Rainbow Nation' in a way that was an example to all. This concert put that contrast in front of the world, but now the positions seem to have been reversed, not levelled. So sad.
@Magnus6207 - Not in Zimbabwe, it didn't - there had been a negotiated transition to universal suffrage & majority rule at the beginning of the 1980's. The South African regime, on the other hand, was entirely race-based and a sickening disgrace to humanity.
I watched this concert on TV in 1987, thought it was absolutely brilliant then and still love it now. What an atmosphere, it must have been brilliant to have been there.
Amazing!! Wow!! Great music

Bingo: the problem was that apartheid was blown away during that concert. The peaceful crowd is black and white, and
they are not killing each other. Made the
government look silly.

You haven´t heard about the political situation in South Africa at the time?
Magnus6207 3 years ago
I thought they had been over with that mess yrs ago, so does that mean the whole political stuff is still going on now?
teeggarscott 3 years ago
The concert is 21 years old. Apartheid ruled at that time.

it's a shame about zimbabwe at the present, robert mugabe has let the country fall apart, there's quintillion percent inflation, disease, etc.
