This really is a special piece of film and a great study for so many reasons. For motorheads and audio guys there's the endless probing over how the Ferrari's sounds were recorded and then dubbed in sync (did you notice the reverb at 3:38?). There's the logistical question of how much of the route was planned and how much was improvised as a result of pedestrian/vehicular traffic. There's the ethical question of "Should he have done this at all??". And the surprise ending always makes me smile!
he was going fast enough.. upto 140mph (225km/h). That's fast even today, and this was back in '76.
bear in mind, these were not controlled conditions. the director could not get a permit to get the streets of paris closed, so he got up early, strapped a camera to the bumper of his mercedes and went on a 9min uninhibited joyride at 5am. pretty cool eh? :)
A very nice movie. If you look carefully, you can actually see, that he is not driving that fast at all. Note how long it takes to overtake slow cars such as some 2CV or a Renault 4. The low camera angle and the dubbed sound of the Ferrari give an impression of much higher speed.
@Versuch15 he was driving really fast, the first time I saw it with music (didn't hear the car sound): if you look at the strips you can realise how fast he was going
@hrgiyzueghe or you can measure it - 2 kilometers of Champs-Élysées took him about 1 minute, thats 120 km/h. Looking at the pedestrians, the film does not look sped up.

Recent claims made by the director himself, however, suggest he drove his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 in the film and dubbed the sound effects of a Ferrari 275GTB
Interesting side line >> According to Wiki's data on Lelouch, he was arrested after his 1976 film, C'était un rendez-vous (above), featuring a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 being illegally driven at high speed through the streets of Paris, was first shown publicly.[
That`s right!
