Some times when you spar you just want to yake some shots. It helps you get siked for a fight, it's important to train your'self to react well to being hit. I do it before a fight. I want to get get hit so when I do fight there is no illusion that I am going to come out smelling like a rose. ;-)

I disagree. Guillard is still head and shoulders above Huerta as far as standup and speed. We know Huerta doesn't like to gameplan and would easily be sucked into a brawl with Melvin. Melvin would work him over, then after Huerta gets tired he'd start trying for the takedown. Mel's TD defense is outlandish and a tired Huerta would have no luck. I see Melvin winning a 2rd TKO.
Huerta's cardio is outstanding and his wrestling is stellar, but he has a tendency to brawl, and only reverts to his wrestling when he's hurt. Not too mention, getting hit hard tends to punch a hole in your gas tank. This is MMA and anything can happen. I would love to see this fight, it would be a war as long as it lasted(which wouldn't be long). Huerta's chin would be his possible saving grace. I just don't think he's ever been hit with the kind of power mel packs.

Huerta has a really good chin but is a wild boxer. He needs to learn how to punch not just throw. He does not step into his jab just throws it out. Hooks or upper cuts were all arm not hip or legs behind them. He needs to improve a bit more and rule number one keep the chin down.
Melvin Guillard is very talented but hasn't done well rescently. He's sort of like the UFC's Zab Judah. He could be a champion if he got his head together.
Roger needs to learn how to gaurd his chin. He could be UFC champ if learns to improve his defense on his feet. Guida almost knock his ass out. He's an animal and one of my favorites, but his head is exposed way too much. I hope he works on that! Viva la raza!
Talked with Roger tonight at the Wat after his training session with Kru Phil Nurse. Roger's a super-nice guy and an absolute machine during his workouts. He's got a TON of Muay Thai skill and watching him work with Phil was very impressive. He's a true superstar in the making and his fight against Kenny Florian on August 9th is gonna be awesome. Ridiculous. Are you serious? The Quarry brothers did that in boxing and they were eating their food through a straw and couldnt form sentences because they had parkinsons shortly after their career.
MMA is a little different because they dont spar nearly as much as a pro striker would but nonetheless this is a horribly unproductive sparring session with little to prove aside from whos "tougher." This is a sport not a dick measuring contest.
No actually I dont. You tell me if they learned anything in this clip. Huerta was getting pegged by monsterous shots and Guillard wasnt exactly good either. The notion that you train the way you fight is ridiculous. Its all about timing, counter punching, footwork etc. Thats what its all about. Its no surprise that Huerta has sucked as a striker after watching this clip. This was NOT a technical sparring session. There are amateur boxers at my gym who can torch these guys on their feet.
one thing you have to take into account, its straight boxing. Its different in mma, when you add wrestling jiu jitsu and thai boxing. If he trains straight boxing its amazing for him, but dont be surprised if he gets beat good. Dont assume the guy beating him can do that in mma.
This guy could of gone pretty far in the sport of boxing. He's great.

Some times when you spar you just want to yake some shots. It helps you get siked for a fight, it's important to train your'self to react well to being hit. I do it before a fight. I want to get get hit so when I do fight there is no illusion that I am going to come out smelling like a rose. ;-)

I disagree. Guillard is still head and shoulders above Huerta as far as standup and speed. We know Huerta doesn't like to gameplan and would easily be sucked into a brawl with Melvin. Melvin would work him over, then after Huerta gets tired he'd start trying for the takedown. Mel's TD defense is outlandish and a tired Huerta would have no luck. I see Melvin winning a 2rd TKO.

Huerta's cardio is outstanding and his wrestling is stellar, but he has a tendency to brawl, and only reverts to his wrestling when he's hurt. Not too mention, getting hit hard tends to punch a hole in your gas tank. This is MMA and anything can happen. I would love to see this fight, it would be a war as long as it lasted(which wouldn't be long). Huerta's chin would be his possible saving grace. I just don't think he's ever been hit with the kind of power mel packs.

Huerta has a really good chin but is a wild boxer. He needs to learn how to punch not just throw. He does not step into his jab just throws it out. Hooks or upper cuts were all arm not hip or legs behind them. He needs to improve a bit more and rule number one keep the chin down.

Talked with Roger tonight at the Wat after his training session with Kru Phil Nurse. Roger's a super-nice guy and an absolute machine during his workouts. He's got a TON of Muay Thai skill and watching him work with Phil was very impressive. He's a true superstar in the making and his fight against Kenny Florian on August 9th is gonna be awesome. Ridiculous. Are you serious? The Quarry brothers did that in boxing and they were eating their food through a straw and couldnt form sentences because they had parkinsons shortly after their career.
MMA is a little different because they dont spar nearly as much as a pro striker would but nonetheless this is a horribly unproductive sparring session with little to prove aside from whos "tougher." This is a sport not a dick measuring contest.

No actually I dont. You tell me if they learned anything in this clip. Huerta was getting pegged by monsterous shots and Guillard wasnt exactly good either. The notion that you train the way you fight is ridiculous. Its all about timing, counter punching, footwork etc. Thats what its all about. Its no surprise that Huerta has sucked as a striker after watching this clip. This was NOT a technical sparring session. There are amateur boxers at my gym who can torch these guys on their feet.

one thing you have to take into account, its straight boxing. Its different in mma, when you add wrestling jiu jitsu and thai boxing. If he trains straight boxing its amazing for him, but dont be surprised if he gets beat good. Dont assume the guy beating him can do that in mma.
