  • E un po' vecchio...

  • Well what he lacked in voice he compensated for it with powerful emotion. Go Juan

  • Quite apart from whoever interprets the roles, It constantly amazes me how underrated this fine late work of Puccini is. It is a dark gem. What a man of the theatre he was.Bravo!!!

  • EL ESTA A OTRO TIEMPO DE LO QUE DEBE SER ORIGINALMENTE....

  • I think he used to be a great singer, but he passed his best and should let younger singers to sing this role he obvisouly can't sing anymore: he changed the end to add an extra breathing.

  • Wow - thats real operatic drama right there. This aria can so often be sung well but badly acted. But here he gets both just right. Bravo Pons. Bravo Puccini!

  • He was sick, Basta cosi, we know this to be true as he pulled himself out of the run. He can still sing, and his voice has always been husky and rough, but with its own beauty and charm.

  • Bravo!

  • Although the high G is a bit out of whack, you must give him his credit! He sings the shit out of this, not to mention all of the other Verdi/Puccini baritone rep! Listen to "Herodiade" with Domingo and Fleming. Awesome!

  • @Mercent123 I agree about his Herodiade, but it was over 20 years ago. Now there is not much left of his voice, troppo vecchio.

  • I hate to be the sour grape in the bunch, but Pons really does not sound good here. It's time for him to call it a day. The high G sounded terrible, very strained and was quite flat as well (On the other hand, he wasn't feeling well during this performance and canceled the remaining ones).

In any case, Pons' best rendition of this aria is from the Met Tabarro of 1994 with Teresa Stratas and Placido Domingo. Here, he just sounds completely worn out.

  • I agree, here he seems to be tired.

The best version is 94's with Domingo and Strattas.

  • I agree too. I saw him do this role a few days ago at teatro alla Scala in Milan and he sounded far better.

  • i've got the version of 1994 in the met with domingo and stratas on dvd it's phenomanal the way he sings it there

  • Bravo! 100%. Gracias.

  • It's incredible that he's still singing this and so well.

  • It's not that uncommon for baritones to sing professionally well into their sixties. Pons was born in 1946.
