I must have listened to this album 10 thousand times. I saw the VUnderground when they came to Detroit , ca1970[?] & were promoting this album at the Vanity ballroom. They threw out copies to the audience from large boxes & I caught one. My copy was lost a long time after; but then came cds, and then the boxed set, [ which is so wonderful with the uncut version of Sweet Jane] and then I got a reprint of the vinyl. Lou Reed forever!!!! [ Lou Reed did not tour for this promotion ]

@Randy4herEra I'm assuming that you were kidding since your comment was so silly but ill bite anyways. This song is actually about abandonment of a father. "Who cares what it does, since you broke my heart, Papa, Papa."
Lou Reed was such a hard-core, hard-drug-shooting, hard-dicked, bad-ass dude, who somehow wrote the softest and sweetest songs. What a talent, and I'm glad he survived that era, with everything he got up to...
@gtjacobs See that. You thought he was so tuff, & he was just a big pussycat, wasn't he? I think the genius of Reed is that he wrote songs for his first 3 albums which dared to trample on the toes of the suburbanites & AM radio. He went totally to the dark side, no wonder he got not airplay for "Heroin" & "Venus in Furs." He had new & different ideas. That is the truest definition of avant garde, and a BRILLIANTartist.
Splt up with a Bulgarian to this album and just rediscovered it - have been transported back to Sofia - this abum and Marvin Gaye's What's Goin On - thank you thank you thank you God for music! No more Lonesome Cowboy Bill!

I'm not sure why this is being compared to here comes the sun. It is much more similar to' till there was you' both have to do with love enhancing the beauty of nature. also the chord structure is similar with the non-diatonic minors
Well, I've heard 'Here Comes The Sun' literally thousands of times since it was released. I'm a fairly big Beatles fan, so I listened to it at home, of course, and it was frequently played on our local radio stations through the years, especially in the 70's. No doubt it's a very nice song, but I prefer 'Who Loves'. On 'LOADED', the Velvet Underground was doing everything right, with the exception of 'Lonesome Cowboy Bill'. Don't know what went wrong there. ; )
@ForbiddenVegetable Yeah ok fuckin tea bagger. The one who thinks that the beatles aren't overrated. That is the opinion of someone who is a musician your opinion doesn't count cause anyone who thinks that the beatles are the greatest knows fuck all about music as a whole and more specifically vocals.
@hermygagala You are obviously a fucking moron. The Beatles were known especially for their harmonies and call and response vocals. It really is a waste of time trying to reason with someone with such a low intelligence level and such little knowledge of music. You will probably live your whole life and not realize just how abysmally dull and ignorant you are. It is futile to try and reason with a person such as yourself. Now good day to you sir!
@ForbiddenVegetable Again you are not a vocalist or a musician. I know the beatles were and are great but the greatest is a complete overrstatement. And they have received much more credit than they can account for. And I'm the ignorant one when you can't open your fucking ears and realize that fame doesn't make a band the best. It can often mean right promotion and right time right place. So liberalize your life and learn a thing or two about underground bands you fuck tard.
@Soundgarden8497 For some reason i can tell you either have never smoked weed in your life or have like personal issues, but whatever it is man you should stop hating man, if u'v never smoked weed before u should try it. if u dont want smoke in yerr lungs use a vaporizer, oh and happy halloween bro.. @homestarfan2008 How is this song ANYTHING like "Here Comes The Sun"? Lou Reed doesn't even like the Beatles. Also, the whole album isn't totally different from the third album (which most the band considers their best album). And at this point, he was just doing what Lou told him to do. On Squeeze, he was just doing what his manager told him to do.
Also, I may be a minority on this but I like this album better than White Light or Velvet Underground. Maybe not as much as VU & Nico.
To the people in here comparing it to " here comes the sun ", it sounds nothing like that song. Go listen to the song, it sounds nothing like it. Lou Reed, was a good song writer listen to Transformers and Berlin.
@homestarfan2008 its not a rip off of here comes the sun it is a shot at it. here comes the sun is about being happy and this is about depression. he was sad at what had become, and when u reach that point you end up hating everything even the beatles singing here comes the sun all happy or even the sight of the sun itself .
To me it ain't a ripoff, it's more like a bitter pisstake. By 1969-70 Lou Reed was trying hard to write hits and Loaded is a great, accessible LP. Obviously Loaded isn't as important as the two first Velvets LPs in the history of rock.
Do you know much about the Velvets' history? Doug Yule didn't "yoko'd the velvets apart". Yule was young, naive and overkeen and was misled and manipulated by Manager Sesnick who's, by all accounts, the real one to blame.
Heard this in work from a cognesenti guy who was playing his (quite) eclectic playlist in the file room;. My first impression? The Patridge Family on drugs! I am a long time fan of the velvets, but never heard this until then. Thanks Danny!
This is one of the most depressing VU songs but the catchy poppy beat throws it off intentionally. It's entirely cynical and borderline disturbing if you look at how the sad pessimistic lyrics contrast with the very upbeat tune. Lou Reed really is brilliant and entirely underrated.
It's not a sad song, and it's definitely not a hippie song. It's a parody of those sappy pop ditties where callow youths wallow in their own misery. The sun is infinitely more important than any of us and our problems are only relevant to us, not the universe.
that's doug yule singing lead, just as on "candy says" and a host of others. you can hear lou reed in the final choruses, adding yet another layer of exquisite harmony to what is already a flawlessly constructed song.
I always thought this was the most ironic song the Velvets ever recorded. When they first started out they were all like "We're not like those hippies and flower children on the West coast" -- and then they do this.
is this a hippie song? lol i just thought they were against the hippie culture.

This song sounds exactly like the Wilco song "Summerteeth." Wilco must have been made it as a direct homage to this song.

It's not a sad song, and it's definitely not a hippie song. It's a parody of those sappy pop ditties where callow youths wallow in their own misery. The sun is infinitely more important than any of us and our problems are only relevant to us, not the universe.

The sun's pretty cool...I mean without it we'd be dead...

that's doug yule singing lead, just as on "candy says" and a host of others. you can hear lou reed in the final choruses, adding yet another layer of exquisite harmony to what is already a flawlessly constructed song.

velvet foreever! im an instant fan, love his voice, these guys are the best. My vote for the best band of all time.

I always thought this was the most ironic song the Velvets ever recorded. When they first started out they were all like "We're not like those hippies and flower children on the West coast" -- and then they do this.
