hes a fantastic human being, teaching people, so many in a real concrete way, and wanting genuinely to get people to improve and get interested in acoustic playing, hes is a wonder..insanely talented
I've watch a LOT of Tommy's instructional stuff over the years - and although I love his enthusiasm for teaching - he is just too freakishly talented to explain basic thumb independence to rookies. No fault of his own - it would be like asking a pro golfer "hey teach me how to hit the ball like you". What I've found is that you can learn more basics from some of Tommy's idols (Chet, Merle, etc)
Teaching is much different than performing. That's where the old saying comes from "those that can, teach, those who can't "do" -- Ive seen it a million times if Ive seen it once. Find some fantastic and phenomenal guitarist that you believe the world shoud see in infamy, and all he wants to do is sit in his 4 x 4 - 10 hrs. a day, teaching. That's it. I can relate. I just can't do it. Takes tons of patience that I have not been "gifted" with.
@123jozef - I thought the old saying was "those who can, do - those who can't, teach" but never mind. In Tommy's case that doesn't apply anyway as he is capable of both.
@Bondidog As a teacher, I've always thought that was a stupid, insulting statement. If I couldn't 'do' physics, or calculus, or play golf, football and ping pong, I doubt I'd be able to teach them. I've not known anyone who was a 'teacher' who couldn't 'do' whatever they were teaching. Not the same as someone being in a teaching role, but not knowing what they were trying to teach. I've known many of those...
Oh I don't think that he's such a bad teacher. He's fun, light hearted and seems patient and willing to share his craft with anyone willing to learn and he can play his ass off. These are pretty good qualities that I myself look for in instructors. Just my opinion and it's not written in stone. lol Peace.

I wonder if anyone ever yelled to Tommy "play Freebird!"
