today i found out Paul Young has since been divorced, lost all his money in property and now works in his ex-wifes restaurant......i would of rather be broke than have to swallow that pill. shitttttt
i was there and defo wasnt miming, it was also on tv the concert from birmingham nec and was lucky enough to meet him in the middle of a fire alarm at the hotel. fantastic voice
I REMEMBER TAPING THIS CONCERT OFF THE RADIO...AND VIDEO RECORDED IT OFF TV...NOPE HE SURE WAS NOT MIMING ...HE DID THAT A FEW TIMES ON TOP OF THE POPS ....HE OFTEN GOOFED UP...BUT HECK DONT EVERYBODY...HE ALWAYS LAUGHED IT OFF...IVE SEEN HIM ONLY 2 TIMES...PINCHED HIS BOTTOM 1 TIME AND GOT HIS AUTOGRAPH....HES A LEGEND ..... I LOVE PAUL YOUNG AND HIS MUSIC AND HIS SOULFULLNESS...XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
i love pino palladino...im going to end up with the same bass he has here which was a musicman stingray fretless....i know all about jaco but when i was a kid only 10 getting into pop music..this was what i was treated to..blue eyed soul; and slick bass playing...wouldnt want it any other way.
This blows the original away. The only self-penned number 1 hit from Marvin, albeit posthumously. Never liked the original reggaeish vibe anyway. Love this sparse instrumentation and cool soul in his voice. As with his tender version of Both Sides Now- better than original!!!
@stellybabe Can't blame a talented singer who is not a songwriter! Who cares! He's got the voice! Kinda sorry to see he's ended up as basicly a "lounge singer" but, HEY! I'd still go see him sing!
why are you disgusted? Why cant you look at it like this...paul young was blue eyed soul...and he opend the doors for lots of white folks to get into that sort of music (me included)..now since your in the UK you have a differnt take on him and i can see where he might not have coverd things as well as you liked..but for me this came out right when i got into orchestra and at 36 ive been a bass player many years..pino palladino, alan spenner, mark lickley, john taylor..those were my idols ALL UK
Eric clapton was among the first few caucasians to openly express their love and talent for music only touched by blacks. I think the genre title is stupid, however, if we are going to talk about blue eyed soul, then get your historical facts right. Halls and oats
Whether you are white, black etc; its not just how you play the soul, but why.
Btw, its not blue eyed soul, its soul. The genre name was to boost sales and give caucasians confidence in soul
my comment was based on american life in USA...ofcourse i know hall and oates but hall and oates did not cover so many people as young did..I grew up in the south even, i was actually there..i had to endure people calling Sade (niggers music) why dont you next time read futher into comments instead of showing this (agression) that makes you look small..you didnt even read my comment..you know what they say about the people you scream the loudest...
@sprintbass Why don't you read into my comments rather than read into the bit where I say that you are full of shit?I genuinly used the term full of sh!t because you made a findemental error about soul. Also, i dont care where you were because you dont know where I was. And also, I meant no disrespect. Just polish up a little.
its hard to take interest in a comment when it starts with (your full of shit)..I know the history of soul, im a bass player for gods sakes james jamerson etc...i simply cannot post everything in its entireity in 350 words is all..i do not wish to fight anymore over this..life is to short..and i have been to your side of the pond a few times..infact im working on moving to cornwall to get away from this place..
At the right side of Paul Young there's the best bass player in the world, his name is Pino Palladino, he plays a 4-string fretless instrument...wonderful...he plays like a painter
Who gives a fuck if he was miming? He recorded it originally with no voice tuners and other stupid technology! he is a legend and these days 95% of people mime! oh yeah they also use pitch correction and such like...unlike Paul Young back in the day! x
hey guitar players!! i posted a decent tab for this song on ultimate guitar, if anyone wants to check it out..dont forget to rate and comment it too :)
just go to the UltimateGuitar website and look for "wherever I lay my hat" version 2.
I adored Paul Young...discovered his Brit-soul voice when I was in the UK in 1982. I too wish he'd tour again. I for one would be there to hear that voice again. He always looked like he had so much fun performing and the audience just ate him up. Kind of like a certain gray-haired IDOL who did his won version of this song in his concerts lasy year.
How come this and other great concerts by PY and others from the 80's don't get released on DVD/Blueray? A few years ago I came across a recording of a concert PY did in Chicago back in -84 - what a treat! I'm sure there's lots of material out there, but hardly anything gets released.
i sadly remember this on BBC TV back in 1985 - at xmas - the last one i would spend with my mother before she died. She was a huge Paul Young fan and this song was the first thing I remember buying for her out of my pocket money. Thanks for posting.
he this is gonna be wierd but im 13 now and i heard him all my life from my mum sooooo i love him and this happens to br my favourite song :D but hes not as good as my chemical romance !!!!
