It is an old Polish military song.

The lyrics were written by Stanislaw Magierski and the music was composed by his wife Danuta Zofia in the winter of 1943 for the Polish partisans who fought against the German and Soviet occupiers.

The largest patisan battle in Europe took place in the region of Lublin in 1944.

After the war was finished the Polish couple was arrested by the Soviets and spent many years in communist prisons.

I like the way it sounds in Finnish.

@factualinfo Thank you so much for your interesting information. This song has been very popular here in Finland, in fact Arja Saijonmaa for example recorded it twice.

It's so sad, that you can't to put links in here, but we have here so called Finnish Recording Archive. From there I can easily count, that there has been over 30 Finnish recordings of this song !

It'sinteresting, that there has been mentioned that it's composed by Stanislaw Magierski.

But anyway, lovely tragic song. We love it.

@cojwat I've noticed that the translation is very accurate. The only minor difference I noticed is the word "toukokuuhun". In the original it is "spring". Almost every Pole is aware of this song and it is regarded as intrinsically Polish. ;-) It is often sung at Polish get-togethers. I was surprised to discover the Finnish connection. I guess only the nations who found themselves desperately fighting against an overwhelming enemy in the middle of taught winter can really feel this song... ;-)

@factualinfo Great! (didn´t know.) My pediatrician was a Polish Jew (woman) who survived Auschwitz. And then fought with the partisans. A remarkable woman who meant a lot to children in Sweden! (Lund.) (I have this with Arja in Swedish.)

I don't mean to be disrespectful however your war story sounds puzzling to me. If the lady survived Auschwitz and was liberated by the Soviet Army in 1945 there would be no partisans that she could join... Nevertheless, I am glad to hear that the she was a great doctor.

PS. My granddad who was Polish was murdered by Germans in Auschwitz in 1943. The camp was set up in 1940 with the purpose of exterminating the Polish intelligentsia and resistance.
