At least your sense of humor wasn't crushed. LOL @BMW helmet! Also sounded like the BMW was knocking after you picked it up, normal? Still best sounding engine ever otherwise.
I admire the adventure spirit, but regardless of experience I wouldn't ever want to take large/heavy adventure bikes on this kind of trail. I think even a KLR650 with knobbies would be tough. You're constantly struggling to get over the terrain, trying to stop it falling over, and then picking it up all the time when it does. Where's the fun? This definitely looks like a dedicated enduro bike trail. Anyway, that's for the "insane people" video!
Yea, you do need a skid plate on a V-Strom. The underside is vulnerable, you got the exhaust, oil cooler and oil filter there, ready to be shot to hell in a road like this (I also have a V-Strom).
But it seems that you guys had lots of fun which is more important than an exhaust :-)
That seemed to be a great ride, maybe stressing the bikes a bit, but fun! The rocky sections were a helluva challenge--I enjoyed your attitudes about everything.
@27suzukirider They were pretty rough for sure, but once in a while a man needs to throw caution to the wind, raise the black flag, and start slitting throats. Sometimes you just need a ride that kicks your ass.
Can you buy a Rockdefender bellypan for the DL650? i have a SV650S i use for work and i love the engine:) , Altho the dakar is so nice for rides in wales and scotland lol:)
I love my touratech kitted out Gs650 dakar i think this bike would be better suited for off roading to the gs1150 havinf said that im a 100lb girl not a big guy like you.
@j0rzeh - Are you married? Any gal that rides GS already has a step on the others! LOL If you watch the Long Way Down or Race to Dakar videos, you'll appreciate what the 650GS can do vs R-GS. Also, look at Brainrotting videos here on YT. Graham does a great job of editing and travelogue-ing. Funny guy, too.
The guy on the Strom can ride and both riders would be alot happier with serious rubber. Better yet try a lighter, real dirtbike which would make you feel like a good rider. My XR650L would glide up those hills. My past KLR couldn't do it with any finesse. I give you credit for trying these trails on overweight steeds.
You kept referring to this as a "road" Fuck I've portaged better looking trails than this with a canoe! It looked liked fun but too bad you didn't have the right type of bikes. I currently have a '77 gs750 and thinking of getting a DL650 next year. Just thinking, if I was younger and less sensible I'd probably do the same shit. Enjoy.
Just a question, It looks like the BMW has Avon Distanzia tires on it. Does the rider like those tires? I am considering using them on my Yamaha WR250X. Your obviously putting them to good use, so your input would be greatly appreciated.
I love the Avon Distanzia. Seems like I get about 12,000 miles on a pair. I used them for a trip to the Panama Canal and back. BMW handles like a sports bike with them on, they are more of on road riding with a little bit of dirt thrown in.
I can't understand why you didn't go more prepared, I own a Strom 650 & the least I would have done would have been to change the tyres for Conti TK80 & Renthal Fatbars. But nice work.
I've ridden that road on my XR and KLR, but I wouldn't try it on my V-Strom. Buying a set of exhaust pipes for the BMW would cost about as much as a good, used, single cylinder enduro! Nice riding though. Maybe I'll see you on the trail sometime.
Hardcore man, hardcore! :D Oh, and easier way to pickup one of those big bikes is to do it behind you with your butt facing the bike, cuz nothing is worse than pullin' a back muscle!
Video is great guys! Priceless reaction when your buddy dropped his expensive helmet.

you guys have any aftermarket parts on the vstrom? would some tourtech guards have helped with the pipe crushing?
masume21 8 months ago
@masume21 Maybe a skid plate would have helped, but the pipes are routed in a really bad place for off road riding on a v strom.

u think a KLR650 would be fine for this trip?

@raulibarra3 Yeah a KLR would make this road no problem.

That strom looks fairly stock. Properly kitted would have got away cleaner! A stock pre-08 XL650 Transalp would have left them both for dead ;-)
