Put some petrol with the help of a syringe all over in the groove where you put the knife. leave it for a minute and it will automatically open up with slight force without a hammer.

It worked liked a charm on my LaCie power supply (one of the worst I've ever used). Didn't damage the casing too much either, which is a good thing.

My boss thinks I should have used a Dremel with a right angle adapter and a cutting wheel.

I don't think the knife helped to open it. You could of used a edge of a board and did the same. Just the hammering gets it apart.
