Song structure and lyrics unlike many others. Imagery, chords and meter is almost perfect. If I had one video to watch of any song of his, this is probably it. Thanks for the time in videoing and posting.

ugh this is so beautiful, i love him so much, love this song, love the banjo, i work on a farm and it's my first day off in a while and it's raining and all i want to do is listen to neil young records today. thank you for making this song exist.
Haiti is a country of Negroes with a large population for its size. Life is hard. In most places the land is poor for farming, the people poverty-stricken. They cannot afford even a small bar of soap. Sometimes they have to walk for hours to get enough water for washing and drinking. And even then, the water may come from a dirty river where cattle have stood all day. Because water is impure and food scarce, there are terrible diseases in Haiti...like yaws.
Oh and btw...RIP David Briggs. Those of us who know who you are may not be as popular as they should be, but I'm sure you are cared about then most people that have taken the dirt dive...RIP.
@appledecca actually it's a Guito, or Banjitar. A six string banjo. That's why he gets such a pronouced bass, which I know Neil likes, bass.
Banjo's normally have four or five strings, so you have only one or two bass strings. He's got three. And man they're fun to play 'cos if you know the guitar you can play a Guito and it sounds so awesome.
His dampening of the bass notes and hammer-on/pull off's on every chord amazes me. Now, I have to laugh because I've never heard a banjo played like that. Listen to those bass notes! He's a genius and always makes life enjoyable for me.
I really wish he woulda played this in Calgary. I was like.. DYING to hear this song, Transformer Man, and some other obscurities, but yeah just the expected playlist for us.
I saw him on his birthday in DC, I listened to this song when I got to work the day of the show, left work, went to the show and he played in on banjo... .like a school boy on good times
wow! got goose bumps when I saw it there. and every time I see it here! the song was dedicated to longtime friend and producer David Briggs (that part didn't make it onto the video). Thanks for puttin it up. You know, although Neil asked not to film, he isn't against bootleggers. He just didn't want the PA system goin crazy with cell phone interferance, so no worries! wish I woulda been that close, but heck, I was lucky enough to be there, and you brought me closer, thanks!
Briggs was a GREAT producer. Neil wouldn't have been lost without him, but he would have walked a more frustrating path, as Briggs lead him away from over-producing his songs after "Harvest" and just pushed record and let Neil play. Many great song writers got lost in the 70s - Leonard Cohen, James Taylor, even Dylan, but Neil kept it simple, but powerful and Briggs had a big hand in that.
@GHETTOPOPS79 agreed dude, he plays the shit out of anything

It's not a real Banjo. It has 6 strings and he's dropped the bottom E to D like he does on his guitar sometimes. It's a guitar with a Banjo body.

i been down the road an i come back, a lonesome whistle on a railroad track!

Reason why Neil gets that bass is the huge bottom wound string..plus it's dropped to D..I have the same banjo..Gibson GB-3.
Mine is from 1926, think Neil's is a 27. They are pretty rare, Ball Bearing design.

Well women are historically terrible when it comes to taste in music...so I'll take that with a grain of salt.

Nobody plays an accoustic guitar like Neil.
His dampening of the bass notes and hammer-on/pull off's on every chord amazes me. Now, I have to laugh because I've never heard a banjo played like that. Listen to those bass notes! He's a genius and always makes life enjoyable for me.
Neil, please put 'Time Fades Away' on a CD
