I agree the police were scum (given the cover-up in the years that followed), but they were actually correct to open Gate C. In doing so, they prevented a disaster from happening outside the ground. Where they fouled up, monumentally, was in not closing the tunnel leading into pens 3 and 4 once they were full. That allowed a huge disaster to happen *inside* the ground. And it meant the crush on the terraces would have happened regardless of whether Gate C stayed closed.

UEFA fucked up and divided the liverpool end into 2 sections with a 4-foot high fence and little policing. section Z was supposed to be for "neutral fans" but the tickets were bought on the black by Juve fans.

The fans might have literally been crushed by other fans but that doesn't make it their fault - it's because the police didn't close of the tunnel and sent the fans to the empty pens that the crush happened.

UEFA fucked up and divided the liverpool end into 2 sections with a 4-foot high fence and little policing. section Z was supposed to be for "neutral fans" but the tickets were bought on the black by Juve fans.
the atmosphere had been hostile all day. objects were thrown by both sides and some LFC fans regrettably charged section Z. in their hurry to run away, a wall collapsed and 39 juve fans died.
