A bit of similarity, very obvious, but still only a bit...The true source of "1979" is red red meat - braindead, I believe. SP even wrote a tribute song for the bassist.
@Huboons i'd say other way around, this song probably inflenced Sonic Youth's sound a bit, after all Zen Arcade was released 4 years prior to Daydream Nation,Sonic Youth's first big impact
@BoltertheSplitEnzwiz I don't know what you mean by impact but Sonic Youth were well known by anyone following indie music by '84 having released three albums by that point. And those albums are the ones that come to mind listening to this not DN which was a lot more melodic and accessible.
@Ha2YES3 No, it really, really doesn't. "1979" gives off feelings of nostalgia and melancholy. This song gives you feelings of wondering what's going on inside your head. Billy Corgan completely made it his own (assuming he even heard this song). I don't like the guy either, but come on, if we're going to call "1979" a stolen song we might as well call every song made after 1989 a stolen song, Walter style.
@peekie666 HAHAHAHAHHAAHHA GO FUCK OFF YOURE A FUCKING IGNORANT the song is called 1979, it was released in 1995, though Im not saying Corgan ripped this off.
It might not be that you're too young, but more like you're not screwed up enough yet to appreciate it. It took me some time to like this band. To me Husker Du was an acquired taste. If found that the more troubled I became the more their music spoke to me.
@Intruzionz Don't worry, you'll get to know more, depending on how much you try to discover new stuff and expand your range of understanding. Everybody walks that path; some learn more than others with better perception developed in them.
@BobBlair The Peoples Court of Music and Dickheadedry has found your argument to be valid. You are absolved of coming off as a dickhead. Next on the docket: The dick who said this isn't music.
@BobBlair this is music, but music surrounds us everyday. i was trying to state that this is not music i would ever in a million years consider listening to.
OMG! Been 20 years since I've heard this (yes, I feel so OLD!) Used to have the vinyl double-set. AMAZING! Saw these guys in Philly too. Incredible. One of my favorite albums.
wow ! i am always amazed with the internet ...such a joy to find this music :o) ~

this song and the pumpkins' "1979" sound similar but are musically nothing alike.

There are infinite I-V-I-V songs, if nobody ever played a progression anybody ever used before, we'd only have about 20 songs to listen to.
