It means trading something you know you have in your possession (a bird in your hand) for something you're not positive is there (two birds that you can't see because they are in a bush).
@ODD50 2 birds in the bush can still fly away or would you rather have 1 brid that is already caught in your hand and you can keep him. 1 bird in your hand is better than seeing 2 birds in a bush.
@Stargirl500100 shut up, you don't know what you're talking about. the expression means that what you have now (bird in the hand) is more worth than having more (two in the bush)
Last time I heard this, I only heard audio, because I'm in bed when it comes on. What comes to mind when you hear this with no visual, whatsoever? I imagined a white blonde haired lady.
What I don't understand is why a car insurance company would use "funny" ads. A car accident isn't something humor can solve. This is akin to a hospital advertising with a slogan like "We'll try our best not to let you die!".
@Mac1634 They use funny ads to attract more people, last time I check most people don't pay much attention to boring old commercials, that's why all the other insurance providers are making funny commercials too.
@xSceneCuppyCakex My point is that no matter how funny they might be, it doesn't say anything for how good an insurance company they are. The funniest advertisement in the world could just as well be for the suckiest product in the world.
Car insurance isn't exactly one of those things where if you get a bad product you can just laugh it off and go "I'll choose better next time". If you get a bad insurance policy and get into an accident, you're probably screwed.
My father told me once that he'd read that the reason there aren't more funny commercials is that research shows that many viewers often remember everything about the ad EXCEPT what the actual product was. Whether or not that's true, I do find it to be true in my case. I love funny commercials, but indeed---I usually can't remember what it was they were advertising.
The Geico campaign is one exception, I think, because it builds the joke directly AROUND the brand name.
@drmackattack you know i don't understand that pawn stars tv show... don't they already make a lot of money off of having their own show (which btw is totally copying american choppers)... they seriously need to raise the amount of money they give, they make more than enough from the tv show
@evergreenmanJ sort of but it really means it's better to have something then to pass it up for a potentially large sum later. For example it's better to hold on to the fish you caught now instead of trying to catch two bigger ones later which may not happen
The saying means it is better to have 1 right there than have 2 away from you in a bush Example: You are hunting turkeys and a turkey comes up to you and it let you pick it up and you here two more in the bush if you go for the ones in the bush you may end up losing all 3
Too bad the majority of people don't even understand this commercial which is based off of what I thought was a pretty common saying. I get it, and so it is hilarious and genius. If you've seen the Antiques Roadshow, it is even better. Her reaction is priceless, and I love, "If this were to go to auction conservatively" An appraiser would say that!
bird in a hand worth two in a bush simply means it is better to have something concrete in hand now as opposed to possibly having something greater later. Chances if the possibilities don't materialized then you lose at least what you had.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush means something you already have is worth more than something better or more, because if you do choose for the "two birds in the bush" rather than "the bird in you hand", you might lose something you own or dear to you.
@KHQMaster " if you do choose for the "two birds in the bush" rather than "the bird in you hand", you might lose something you own or dear to you." Um, no. You went from allegory to contrived meaning.
HAHA! im pretty sure this is one of the best commercials i've seen. Their dialogue is just so believable, that black lady forreal looks and sounds surprised, she needs to act!! lmao geico is gettin good...
@tortorandmissymuff1 The saying "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" is a hunter's saying. It means "A bird that I've shot and killed, and have in my hand, Is worth two birds in the bush, because I don't have them."
First time I saw this, I had just turned on the TV and DIDN'T SEE THE BEGINNING! I thought it was antique roadshow, saw the figurine and pushed numbers on the remote to change channels. I hit the "enter" button right as he said "worth two in the bush"! I laughed and changed it back, and it was showing the closeup with the caption "Bird in the Hand: Worth at least two in the bush" and CRACKED UP laughing! Then realized it was a commercial.
Just to help people :) This proverb refers back to mediaeval falconry where a bird in the hand (the falcon) was a valuable asset and certainly worth more than two in the bush (the prey).
